The efficacy of palliative radiation therapy in the treatment of spinal cord and cauda equina compression due to metastatic malignant melanoma was evaluated in 38 sites in 35 patients treated between 1970 and 1990. All patients had radiographic documentation of epidural compression. The median dose of radiation therapy was 2850 cGy (range, 500 to 4000 cGy), with daily fractions ranging from 200 to 800 cGy. The paper discusses the results of treatment of endometrial cancer patients with high energy radiation (76 cases). Three-year survival rate was 78.3%. A combination of radiation and hormonotherapy was given to 34 cases. The control group (not receiving 17-hydroxyprogesterone caproate treatment) included 42. Survival rate for hormonotherapy group was higher than in controls (84.1 and 74.8%, respectively). Hormonal treatment was the most effective in patients with early stages of cancer and well- and moderately-differentiated tumors.

Irradiation temperature, changed from 37 degrees C to 4 degrees C, acts as a dose-modifying factor with regard to the dose-yield relationship for dicentric chromosome aberrations in human lymphocytes irradiated with 150 kV X-rays. The temperature dependence of the aberration yield observed at constant dose is S-shaped, with a sharp rise near 15 degrees C from a lower plateau below 12 degrees C to a higher plateau beyond 17 degrees C. Thirty-six 56-day-old male Sprague-Dawley albino rats served as two groups of experimental animals. Group 1 was irradiated with 400 rads delivered as total-body radiation from a cesium source. Group 2 served as the control group and was not irradiated. Three weeks later, the dental microscope was used to facilitate various dental procedures in both groups of animals (cavity preparation filled with zinc oxide-eugenol, pulp exposure capped with zinc oxide-eugenol, and pulp exposure left open). Two animals for each procedure from Groups 1 and 2 were killed at time intervals of 2, 4, and 8 weeks.

In the experiments (605 animals) and clinically (145 patients with malignant neoplasms) the authors have studied the possibility to use superhigh-frequency electromagnetic hyperthermia (42 degrees), associated with ionizing radiation in the complex treatment of tumors. The superhigh-frequency electromagnetic hyperthermia is really one of the ways to enhance the radiosensitivity of a neoplastic tissue. Ionizing radiation and SHF-hyperthermia used simultaneously provide for the directed and prompt disactivation of tumor cells.
