Total ankle arthroplasty via lateral transfibular approach with and without concomitant subtalar arthrodesis : radiological alignment, patient-reported outcomes, and range of motion at ≥ five-year follow-up.

AIMS: Concomitant subtalar pathology may require arthrodesis at the time of total ankle arthoplasty (TAA), yet direct comparisons of isolated TAA versus TAA + subtalar joint arthrodesis (STJA) via a lateral transfibular approach, using the same implant, remain limited. We compared ≥ five-year radiological, functional, and range of motion (ROM) outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective single-centre cohort included 119 patients from January 2015 to December 2020 with ≥ five-year follow-up: 50 underwent TAA with concomitant subtalar arthrodesis and 69 underwent isolated TAA. Outcomes were Foot and

Intracranial Cysts: A Single-Institution Experience With 27 Surgically Managed Cases.

Introduction Intracranial cysts (ICs) are rare pathologies that are often found incidentally during radiological examinations. They may appear in various brain regions and are categorized as normal, congenital, traumatic, or tumor-associated variants. ICs can be asymptomatic or cause symptoms, such as headaches, visual impairments, or seizures, depending on their size and location. Severe complications include obstructive hydrocephalus, loss of consciousness, and intracranial bleeding. Surgical excision is the most accepted type of management in most ICs. Objectives This study aimed to evaluat

Decoding a Rare Case of Pleomorphic Adenoma: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Diagnosing palatal swellings is crucial for various reasons, mainly because these swellings can signal a range of health problems, from benign conditions to more serious diseases. Here, we have reported an interesting case of long-standing palatal swelling. Accurate diagnosis typically involves a combination of clinical examination, patient history, imaging studies, and possibly biopsy or other laboratory tests. Since each condition has unique characteristics and treatment approaches, differential diagnosis is essential for ensuring effective management. This case highlights the importance of

The non-operative management of primary osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is a syndrome characterised by joint pain, resulting in functional limitation and a decreased quality of life. This chronic condition is one of the major public health problems facing society today and is likely to become more prevalent. The expected increase is because of the primary causative factors, advancing age and obesity, becoming increasingly prevalent in society. The diagnosis of osteoarthritis can be made clinically when activity related joint pain is present, alongside morning joint stiffness that lasts for less than 30 minutes. However, a radiological diagnosis can

Hypophosphataemic osteomalacia due to cadmium exposure in the silver industry.

Chronic heavy metal exposure and the health hazards that ensue are important public-health problems. We highlight the occurrence of hypophosphataemic osteomalacia due to chronic cadmium exposure in the silver industry in India. Three silversmiths presented similarly with clinical, biochemical and radiological evidence of hypophosphataemic osteomalacia. Considering their occupation, their blood samples were screened for heavy metals and were found to have toxic levels of cadmium. They were initiated on neutral phosphate and calcitriol. On follow-up, they reported significant reduction in severi

[Central nervous system tuberculosis in children: 1. Clinical and laboratorial presentation].

Tuberculosis still occupies a remarkable place as a worldwide health problem, chiefly in emerging countries, like Brazil. The central nervous system (CNS) involvement by Mycobacterium tuberculosis is one of the most feared features of disease, because of its high morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to describe some epidemiological, clinical and laboratorial aspects of 52 children in a tertiary pediatric hospital with CNS tuberculosis. At diagnosis, the majority of patients showed low age, compromised nutritional status, previous contact with bacillary individuals, delayed or absent immun

The impact of urinary schistosomiasis on the health of two community populations living in endemic areas in Tanzania.

Two populations living in separate areas in Tanzania known to be endemic for S. haematobium were investigated for the effects of the infection on community health. Both populations, each of about 450 examinees, had similar infection prevalences of 54-57% with peaks of 66-67% among the 5 to 19 year olds. Over 90% of the infections from either population were symptomatic showing mostly manifestations of vesical lesions. Radiological examinations of a random sample of 100 infected subjects from the population with the lower infection intensity revealed a high prevalence of 28% for bilateral urete

Glioblastoma mimicking autoimmune meningitis in an adult: A complex diagnostic challenge.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a highly aggressive primary brain tumor with a poor prognosis. It commonly affects the brain and rarely spreads outside the central nervous system owing to barriers like the blood-brain barrier. We present a rare case of GBM with atypical features mimicking autoimmune meningitis, complicating the diagnosis. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 45-year-old previously healthy man presented with persistent headaches, dizziness, vomiting, neck pain, diplopia from bilateral abducens nerve palsy, and cognitive dysfunction. The cerebrospinal fluid analysis did not confirm
