In normotensive Wistar rats (NWR) of a random-bred strain and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) of the OKAMOTO-AOKI-strain origin, course, and histological features of the carotid body arteries were examined. The studies were carried out in animals aging 3 d up to 70 weeks using serial sections and light microscopic methods. In both strains of animals the single carotid body was supplied by only one artery. In continuation of earlier studies, we have investigated the influence of 52-Gs (50-Hz) magnetic fields on the evolution of pinealocyte 'synaptic ribbons' and serum melatonin levels in rats, following 30 min daily exposure. The animals were sacrificed after 1, 3, 7, 15 and 21 days. A significant decrease in the number of synaptic ribbons was observed after 15 and 21 days, together with a significant drop in serum melatonin concentrations after 15 days. The mediating role of the retina in these modifications and magnetic field effects is discussed.

The source of vagal efferent discharge (VED) in the anterior branch of the gastric vagus was investigated in urethane-chloralose anesthetized rats using successive and selective vagal cuts. After cutting the right cervical vagus, the basal VEDs were increased in 15 out of 21 cases by 4-53% (median 18%). Bilateral lesions of nucleus septal lateralis resulted in a sustained and significant increase in water intake, without any change in food intake. Intracerebral injection of dopamine (DA) or of spiperone (a central D2-receptor antagonist) did not elicit any change in water or food intake. The polydipsia resulting from septal lesions is thus a primary polydipsia, which is independent of food intake, and is not mediated by neurotransmitter dopamine.

Low temperature photochemical silver staining was used for immunohistochemical demonstration of epidermal growth factor (EGF) in the rat submandibular gland. EGF was shown to be clearly localized in granular convoluted tubule cells. Silver staining with an immunogold method showed excellent resolution of the antigen localization.
