Ketamine-xylazine anesthesia causes hyperopic refractive shift in mice.

Mice have increasingly been used as a model for studies of myopia. The key to successful use of mice for myopia research is the ability to obtain accurate measurements of refractive status of their eyes. In order to obtain accurate measurements of refractive errors in mice, the refraction needs to be performed along the optical axis of the eye. This represents a particular challenge, because mice are very difficult to immobilize. Recently, ketamine-xylazine anesthesia has been used to immobilize mice before measuring refractive errors, in combination with tropicamide ophthalmic solution to ind

Refractive status at birth: its relation to newborn physical parameters at birth and gestational age.

BACKGROUND: Refractive status at birth is related to gestational age. Preterm babies have myopia which decreases as gestational age increases and term babies are known to be hypermetropic. This study looked at the correlation of refractive status with birth weight in term and preterm babies, and with physical indicators of intra-uterine growth such as the head circumference and length of the baby at birth. METHODS: All babies delivered at St. Stephens Hospital and admitted in the nursery were eligible for the study. Refraction was performed within the first week of life. 0.8% tropicamide with

Cycloplegic refraction in preschool children: comparisons between the hand-held autorefractor, table-mounted autorefractor and retinoscopy.

AIMS: It is common for refraction to be measured using different testing methods in children, with much debate still ongoing on the preferred method. Therefore, we compared cycloplegic refraction measurements using three objective methods in a large cohort of children. METHODS: We present the findings from a total of 51 children who were recruited and examined as part of the Strabismus, Amblyopia and Refractive error in Singapore preschool children (STARS) study. Each child underwent a comprehensive eye examination, which included cycloplegic refraction using a hand-held autorefractor (Retino

The use of isotropic photorefraction for vision screening in infants.

Isotropic photorefraction is a technique which makes possible the rapid, economic, large scale screening of infants and young children for refractive errors. The relative size of blur circles reflected from the fundus in 3 flash photographs with different camera settings allows the size and direction of refractive errors to be estimated. The method has been validated against retinoscopic measures on a large group of infants. Findings of a high incidence of astigmatism in the first year are confirmed. Detection of hypermetropia in early infancy by this screening procedure may allow preventive t

Corneal Lymphangiogenesis: Current Pathophysiological Understandings and Its Functional Role in Ocular Surface Disease.

The cornea is a transparent and avascular tissue that plays a central role in light refraction and provides a physical barrier to the external environment. Corneal avascularity is a unique histological feature that distinguishes it from the other parts of the body. Functionally, corneal immune privilege critically relies on corneal avascularity. Corneal lymphangiogenesis is now recognized as a general pathological feature in many pathologies, including dry eye disease (DED), corneal allograft rejection, ocular allergy, bacterial and viral keratitis, and transient corneal edema. Currently, siza

[Perfect refractive cataract surgery: still a long way to go].

Refractive cataract surgery has evolved considerably in recent years owing to the rapid development in precise ocular biometry, surgical technique and instrumentation, and various astigmatism-correcting and multifocal intraocular lenses. However, inherent defects of these premium intraocular lenses should not be underestimated and neither should imperfections of measuring devices. Cataract surgery complications such as posterior capsular opacification and dry eye, which were originally infrequent or minor, are becoming increasingly prominent. Surgeons must properly understand and conduct refra

[Correction of refractive errors by subtractive corneal surgery: History and perspectives].

The goal of this review is to trace the history of refractive correction, from the earliest optical devices to modern refractive surgical techniques. Following the invention of spectacles in the Middle Ages, the first corneal procedures, such as Sato's and Fyodorov's keratotomies and Barraquer's keratomileusis, highlighted the limitations of early mechanical approaches. In the 1980s, the advent of the excimer laser revolutionized refractive surgery with the introduction of PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) and subsequently LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis). The development of the f

Is refractive surgery justified?

Refractive surgery may be defined as any kind of eye surgery in which attempt is made to produce a level of spectacle error that is accepted to the patient. Cataract surgery with lens implantation is the most often done refractive surgery on the eye. The following kinds of refractive surgery are being practised: With normal crystalline lens, phacic intra-ocular lens, surgery with cornea, using excimer laser, other newer techniques. Radial keratotomy is one procedure of refractive surgery with cornea. In this operation, radial cuts are made on the cornea starting near the edge of the pupil and
