Common Mental health issues among non-refugee migrants in Australia: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: Mental health issues were the fourth leading cause of disease burden in Australia in 2022. About 30% of Australia's population are migrants, whose mental health is poorly understood. We aimed to report the prevalence and risk factors of common mental health issues among non-refugee migrants in Australia. METHODS: We reviewed studies published between 2000 and 2024 on mental health issues amongst migrants in Australia following the Arksey and O'Malley's methodological framework and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. RESULTS: Out of 3122 titles retrieved on mental health issues among migrants in

The role of environmental sensitivity in the mental health of Syrian refugee children: a multi-level analysis.

Individuals with high environmental sensitivity have nervous systems that are disproportionately receptive to both the protective and imperilling aspects of the environment, suggesting their mental health is strongly context-dependent. However, there have been few consolidated attempts to examine putative markers of sensitivity, across different levels of analysis, within a single cohort of individuals with high-priority mental health needs. Here, we examine psychological (self-report), physiological (hair hormones) and genetic (polygenic scores) markers of sensitivity in a large cohort of 159

Comparison of refugee patients with cystic fibrosis and their counterpart children from Turkey during the war.

Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011, the population of Arab refugees in Turkey has rapidly increased. While cystic fibrosis (CF) is believed to be rare among Arabs, recent studies suggest it is underdiagnosed. This study aims to present the demographic, clinical, and genetic characteristics of CF patients among Arab refugees in Turkey. Additionally, a comparison is made between the findings in the National CF Registry 2021 in Turkey (NCFRT) and the refugee CF patient group. The study included refugee patients between the ages of 0 and 18 years who were diagnosed with CF and rece…

Conceptualisation of violence and discipline among students, teachers, and parents in Nyarugusu Refugee Camp, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Little academic research has been conducted on how people conceptualise 'violence' and 'discipline', especially in humanitarian settings. This may limit the transferability of violence prevention interventions. This paper examines the understanding of violence and discipline concepts among students, teachers, and parents in the Nyarugusu Refugee Camp in Tanzania. METHODS: A qualitative study was undertaken as part of the larger trial testing the effectiveness of the EmpaTeach intervention to prevent physical violence from teachers to students implemented in 27 schools in Nyarugusu

Chickenpox Outbreaks in Three Refugee Camps on Mainland Greece, 2016-2017: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Displaced populations face disproportionately high risk of communicable disease outbreaks given the strains of travel, health care circumstances in their country of origin, and limited access to health care in receiving countries. STUDY OBJECTIVE: Understanding the role of demographic characteristics in outbreaks is important for timely and efficient control measures. Accordingly, this study assesses chickenpox outbreaks in three large refugee camps on mainland Greece from 2016 - 2017, using clinical line-list data from Médecins du Monde (MdM) clinics. METHODS: Clinical line-li

The Predictive Utility of Trauma Subtypes in the Assessment of Mental Health Outcomes for Persons Resettled as Refugees.

Pre-migration trauma, a psychological risk factor for refugees, is often measured using cumulative indices. However, recent research suggests that trauma subtypes, rather than cumulative trauma, may better predict psychological outcomes. This study investigated the predictive utility of trauma subtypes in the assessment of refugee mental health. Multiple regression was used to determine whether cumulative trauma or trauma subtypes explained more variance in depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom scores in 70 Syrian and Iraqi refugees. Subtype models performed be…

A shared fate: adapting and personalising medical care from the perspective of a refugee reception country.

The article outlines socio-medical challenges faced by a country hosting refugees. Since the full-scale Russian invasion, more than 3.6 million Ukrainians have fled to Poland. Among these, a 9-year-old post-transplant patient, Tetiana. The story of the girl and her family reveals the refugees', the authors', and other doctors' varied attitudes towards the war. Considering differences between the Polish and Ukrainian health care systems, and the need for well-coordinated and effective assistance, a professional, and realistically financed system needs to be established. The presence of Ukrainia…

Cystic echinococcosis in a Moroccan boy: a silent and neglected disease among refugee and migrant children.

We report the unusual case of a 5-year-old migrant boy from a rural area of Morocco with an almost-giant lung hydatid cyst that was an incidental finding on a chest X-ray performed during routine visa procedures. Echinococcus granulosus serology test was initially negative with subsequent positive seroconversion. Albendazole was started at 4 weeks before surgery and maintained for 4 months, with a favourable outcome. Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is considered a neglected tropical disease and affects more than one million people worldwide, mostly from a lower socioeconomic background. Preventive
