The Functions and Application Prospects of Hepatocyte Growth Factor in Reproduction.

Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is expressed in multiple systems and mediates a variety of biological activities, such as mitosis, motility, and morphogenesis. A growing number of studies have revealed the expression patterns and functions of HGF in ovarian and testicular physiology from the prenatal to the adult stage. HGF regulates folliculogenesis and steroidogenesis by modulating the functions of theca cells and granulosa cells in the ovary. It also mediates somatic cell proliferation and steroidogenesis, thereby affecting spermatogenesis in males. In addition to its physiological effects o

Reasons for reduced reproduction after colectomy in women with ulcerative colitis.

OBJECTIVES: Colectomy and subsequent bowel reconstruction in women with ulcerative colitis (UC) is associated with decreased fertility, this survey aims to investigate possible reasons for this. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Women with UC aged 18-44 years at colectomy 2000-2020 were identified and data were retrieved from the Swedish inflammatory bowel disease register (SWIBREG). Additional information was obtained using a study-specific questionnaire. RESULTS: The survey was completed by 214 (72.8%) out of 294 eligible women. Mean age at disease onset was 22.9 years (standard deviation 0.5). No rec

Probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus species: considerations for female reproduction and offspring health.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus is a type of bacteria known as a probiotic and is often used to support the health of the digestive system and vaginal flora. This type of bacteria has an important role, showing positive effects on female reproductive biology, particularly by maintaining the balance of microorganisms in the vagina, reducing the risk of infection, and strengthening the immune system to support maternal health during pregnancy. There are also studies showing that these probiotics prevent maternal obesity and gestational diabetes. Consuming probiotics containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus st

Impact of endometriosis on oocyte quality in women undergoing assisted reproduction.

Endometriosis is a chronic gynecological condition which can lead to infertility in women during reproductive age. Endometriosis influences the assisted reproductive technology (ART) outcomes by its impact on oocyte and embryo quality, oocyte numbers and subsequently the embryo numbers and endometrial receptivity. There has been clinical dilemma as to whether it is predominantly the oocyte, or the endometrium which affects the pregnancy outcomes in women with endometriosis. In this review we provide an overview of the effect of endometriosis on the oocyte molecular mechanism, the overall effec

Maternal Characteristics in Natural and Medically Assisted Reproduction Dizygotic Twin Pregnancies.

Previous studies have shown that mothers of naturally conceived dizygotic (DZ) twins tend to be taller, older, and smoke more than mothers of naturally conceived monozygotic (MZ) twin and mothers of singletons. Here, we investigate whether mothers of naturally conceived DZ twins differ from mothers who conceived their DZ twins after medically assisted reproduction (MAR) in eight maternal traits related to fertility based on observational survey data. We include data from 33,648 mothers from the Netherlands Twin Register (NTR) and 1660 mothers of twins from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Chil…

The role of taurine in male reproduction: Physiology, pathology and toxicology.

Taurine, a sulfur-containing amino acid, has a wide range of biological effects, such as bile salt formation, osmotic regulation, oxidative stress inhibition, immunomodulation and neuromodulation. Taurine has been proved to be synthesized and abundant in male reproductive organs. Recently, accumulating data showed that taurine has a potential protective effect on reproductive function of male animals. In physiology, taurine can promote the endocrine function of the hypothalamus-pituitary-testis (HPT) axis, testicular tissue development, spermatogenesis and maturation, delay the aging of testic

Thrombocytes and Platelet-Rich Plasma as Modulators of Reproduction and Fertility.

Thrombocytes play an essential role in hemostasis and thrombosis. Moreover, the controlled activation of thrombocytes is required in reproduction and fertility. The platelet-activating factor and the controlled activation of platelets have important roles in folliculogenesis, ovulation, placental development, implantation and embryo development. Activated platelets accumulate in the follicular vessels surrounding the follicle and, due to its released soluble molecules (factors, mediators, chemokines, cytokines, neurotransmitters), locally increase oocyte maturation and hormone secretion. Furth…

Carrying eggs uphill: are costs of reproduction stronger on steeper slopes?

Locomotor impairment during pregnancy is a well-documented cost of reproduction, but most empirical studies have not incorporated ecological complexity, such as locomotion on sloping inclines rather than horizontal surfaces. Biomechanical factors suggest that carrying a heavy burden-including shifts in the body's centre of mass-may impair locomotor ability even more when an animal is running uphill. If so, then measuring costs of reproduction on horizontal racetracks may underestimate these costs in nature for arboreal species. To evaluate this prediction, we measured the pregnancy-induced red…

Comprehensive analyses of 435 goat transcriptomes provides insight into male reproduction.

A systematic analysis of genes related to reproduction is crucial for obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie male reproductive traits in mammals. Here, we utilized 435 goat transcriptome datasets to unveil the testicular tissue-specific genes (TSGs), allele-specific expression (ASE) genes and their uncharacterized transcriptional features related to male goat reproduction. Results showed a total of 1790 TSGs were identified in goat testis, which was the most among all tissues. GO enrichment analyses suggested that testicular TSGs were mainly involved …

The interaction between the environment and embryo development in assisted reproduction.

It can be assumed that the natural processes of selection and developmental condition in the animal provide the best prerequisites for embryogenesis resulting in pregnancy and subsequent birth of a healthy neonate. In contrast, circumventing the natural selection mechanisms and all developmental conditions in a healthy animal harbors the risk of counteracting, preventing or reducing the formation of embryos or substantially restricting their genesis. Considering these facts, it seems to be obvious that assisted reproductive techniques focusing on early embryonic stages serve an expanded and un

[Progress of researches on developmental processes and reproduction mode of Pneumocystis].

Pneumocystis, an important opportunistic fungal pathogen that parasitizes in multiple mammalian lungs, may cause life-threatening Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) and even death among immunocompromised individuals. With the rapid development of high-throughput sequencing and multi-omics technologies, systematic comparative analyses of genome, transcriptome, and whole-genome sequencing results demonstrate that Pneumocystis is a type of obligate biotrophic fungi, and requires obtaining nutrition from hosts. In addition, sexual reproduction is an essential process for Pneumocystis survival, productio…

Photoperiodic regulation of avian physiology: From external coincidence to seasonal reproduction.

Seasonal cycles of environmental cues generate variation in the timing of life-history transition events across taxa. It is through the entrainment of internal, endogenous rhythms of organisms to these external, exogenous rhythms in environment, such as cycling temperature and daylight, by which organisms can regulate and time life history transitions. Here, we review the current understanding of how photoperiod both stimulates and terminates seasonal reproduction in birds. The review describes the role of external coincidence timing, the process by which photoperiod is proposed to stimulate r…

On the Spread of Microbes That Manipulate Reproduction in Marine Invertebrates.

AbstractBacterial symbionts are functionally integral to animal reproduction and development, some of which have evolved additional mechanisms to override these host programs. One habitat that is increasingly recognized to contain phylogenetically related lineages of reproductive manipulators is the ocean. The reproduction of marine invertebrates often occurs by free spawning instead of by the physical contact of copulation in terrestrial systems. We developed an integrated model to understand whether and when microbes that manipulate host reproduction by cytoplasmic incompatibility, feminizat…

COVID-19, Oxidative Stress and Male Reproduction: Possible Role of Antioxidants.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) involves a complex pathogenesis and with the evolving novel variants of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the long-term impacts of the unceasing COVID-19 pandemic are mostly uncertain. Evidence indicates deleterious impact of this disease upon male reproductive health. It is concerning that COVID-19 may contribute to the already global declining trend of male fertility. The adverse impacts of COVID-19 on male reproduction may primarily be attributed to the induction of systemic inflammatory responses and oxidative stress (OS),…

Characteristics of N6-methyladenosine Modification During Sexual Reproduction of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

The unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (hereafter Chlamydomonas) possesses both plant and animal attributes, and it is an ideal model organism for studying fundamental processes such as photosynthesis, sexual reproduction, and life cycle. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most prevalent mRNA modification, and it plays important roles during sexual reproduction in animals and plants. However, the pattern and function of m6A modification during the sexual reproduction of Chlamydomonas remain unknown. Here, we performed transcriptome and methylated RNA immunoprecipitation sequencing (…

Unraveling the Molecular Impact of Sperm DNA Damage on Human Reproduction.

Semen analysis is the cornerstone in the investigation of fertility status of male partner. However, more advanced tests have emerged including the analysis of sperm chromatin integrity and DNA damage as markers of semen quality. This is of particular interest, as preserving the genetic information is essential to achieve a successful reproductive event. Moreover, the presence of unrepaired DNA lesions can affect cellular functions, resulting in the onset of pathological conditions associated with male infertility, and the transmission of diseases to the offspring. Hence, in this chapter, we a
