The Utility of Neighborhood Social Vulnerability Indices in Predicting Non-Home Discharge Disposition Following Revision Total Joint Arthroplasty: A Comparison Study.

BACKGROUND: Identifying risk factors associated with non-home discharge (NHD) following revision hip and knee total joint arthroplasty (TJA) could reduce the rate of preventable discharge to rehabilitation or skilled nursing facilities. Neighborhood-level deprivation indices are becoming an increasingly important measure of socioeconomic disadvantage as these indices consider multiple social determinants of health. This study aimed to compare the utility of widely used neighborhood social vulnerability indices in predicting NHD following revision TJA patients. METHODS: This study included 1,0

Association of neighborhood-level disadvantage beyond individual sociodemographic factors in patients with or at risk of knee osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Lower socioeconomic status (SES) is a risk factor for poorer pain-related outcomes. Further, the neighborhood environments of disadvantaged communities can create a milieu of increased stress and deprivation that adversely affects pain-related and other health outcomes. Socioenvironmental variables such as the Area Deprivation Index, which ranks neighborhoods based on socioeconomic factors could be used to capture environmental aspects associated with poor pain outcomes. However, it is unclear whether the ADI could be used as a risk assessment tool in addition to individual-level SE

Neighborhood Food Access in Early Life and Trajectories of Child Body Mass Index and Obesity.

IMPORTANCE: Limited access to healthy foods, resulting from residence in neighborhoods with low food access, is a public health concern. The contribution of this exposure in early life to child obesity remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations of neighborhood food access during pregnancy or early childhood with child body mass index (BMI) and obesity risk. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Data from cohorts participating in the US nationwide Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes consortium between January 1, 1994, and March 31, 2023, were used. Participant inclusion

Living arrangements and cognitive abilities of community-dwelling older adults in Singapore.

AIM: Dementia is a growing public health concern. It is necessary to focus on factors that may help preserve cognitive function in late life. Limited research has examined how living arrangements are associated with cognitive function in older adults. This study aims to further our understanding of this association in community-dwelling older adults in a multi-ethnic Asian population. METHODS: Data were obtained from a cross-sectional population survey of 2548 adults aged 60 and older with standardized instruments. Living arrangements were classified as living with adult children and grandchi

How the Frequency and Phenotype of Sarcoidosis is Driven by Environmental Determinants.

BACKGROUND: Sarcoidosis is a systemic disease in which the personal environment seems to drive a differentiated disease frequency and clinical expression. The main epidemiological studies suggest a key influence of potential environmentally linked exposures related to the type of occupation, the household, life style, socioeconomic status, and region of residence. OBJECTIVE: To provide an update on how sarcoidosis may be modulated by environmental factors. DATA SOURCES: We searched PubMed for epidemiological studies. SYNTHESIS: The risk of sarcoidosis is enhanced in people working in jobs r

The relationship between living alone and depressive symptoms among older gay men: the moderating role of sense of belonging with gay friends.

BACKGROUND: Living alone is a risk factor for depressive symptoms among older adults, although it is unclear if it is a risk factor for older gay men. A sense of belonging to the gay community is protective and might compensate for living alone. This research investigated whether a sense of belonging with gay friends weakened the relationship between living alone and depressive symptoms among older gay men. METHODS: A community sample of 160 Australian gay men aged 65-92 years completed the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale and two visual analogue scales assessing a sense of b

Do neighbourhood socioeconomic circumstances not matter for weight status among Australian men? Multilevel evidence from a household survey of 14 691 adults.

OBJECTIVE: A recent analysis of the Australian National Health Survey (2011-2012) reported that the patterning of overweight and obesity among men, unlike for women, was not associated with neighbourhood socioeconomic disadvantage. The purpose of this study was to examine whether this gender difference in potential neighbourhood 'effects' on adult weight status can be observed in analyses of a different source of data. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A cross-sectional sample of 14 693 people aged 18 years or older was selected from the 2012 wave of the 'Household, Income and Labour Dynamics

Community-level risk factors for notifiable gastrointestinal illness in the Northwest Territories, Canada, 1991-2008.

BACKGROUND: Enteric pathogens are an important cause of illness, however, little is known about their community-level risk factors (e.g., socioeconomic, cultural and physical environmental conditions) in the Northwest Territories (NWT) of Canada. The objective of this study was to undertake ecological (group-level) analyses by combining two existing data sources to examine potential community-level risk factors for campylobacteriosis, giardiasis and salmonellosis, which are three notifiable (mandatory reporting to public health authorities at the time of diagnosis) enteric infections. METHODS

Homicide victimization in California: an Asian and non-Asian comparison.

Previous literature has not specified the contextual differences that adequately explain Asian Americans' underinvolvement in homicide. This study examines the social contexts within which homicide takes place. Homicide data from 1991 to 1999 in California are analyzed, and the results show that, compared to other groups, Asian homicide victims are more likely to be killed by family members, to be female, and to be married. Results of a negative binomial regression analysis also show that an acculturation factor that weakens the institution of family tends to affect general homicide more for A

A study of hepatitis B antigen carriers among schoolchildren in Netanya, Israel.

In the town of Netanya 9162 elementary schoolchildren (age 6-14 years) were tested for hepatitis B antigen (HBsAg) by the counter-electrophoresis method. The overall prevalence was 1.8% with a higher rate for males (2.2%) than for females (1.4%). Higher rates were observed among children born in the autumn and winter, particularly among the boys. This seasonal trend and male-female difference may partially be explained if infection occurs at circumcision. The ethnic distribution showed highest rates among children of Libyan and Yemenite origin (3.9% and 2.6%, respectively), and lowest rates am

Association of residential greenspace with incident depression: a prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Depression is a major public health challenge worldwide. We aimed to examine the association between residential greenspace and incident depression in UK Biobank participants. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of 265,311 UK Biobank participants. Cox regression models were used to examine the association between residential greenspace (300 m/1,000 m buffers) and all-cause depression, adjusting for varying degrees of confounders across 6 sequential models. Restricted cubic spline regression (RCS) was additionally adopted to assess the dose-response relationship between

Urbanicity, Neighborhood Conditions, and Dementia Mortality.

IMPORTANCE: As populations age and cities become more densely populated, urbanicity is transforming neighborhood environments that influence healthy aging. However, how dementia mortality varies across the urbanicity gradient and how neighborhood conditions contribute to this pattern remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: To examine dose-response associations of urbanicity with dementia mortality, quantify the extent to which neighborhood socioeconomic and environmental factors attenuate this pattern, and estimate potential deaths averted under feasible improvements in modifiable conditions. Inequities in Access: Public Open Spaces and Physical Activity Disparities Among Brazilian Preschoolers in Vulnerable Communities.

BACKGROUND: Public open spaces (POS) can promote physical activity (PA) in children, but evidence of their role in vulnerable contexts remains limited. This study examines how POS characteristics (distance, quality, and parental perception) influence PA among preschoolers in low-income neighborhoods. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in public preschools in peripheral neighborhoods of a capital city in Northeastern Brazil. Moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) and total PA (TPA) of 128 preschoolers aged 3-5 (56.9% male) were measured using accelerometry. POS accessibility and quality

Translating caregiver-identified neighborhood features into quantitative variables for statistical analyses of effects on child health.

PURPOSE: Neighborhoods are hypothesized to affect weight-related outcomes in part through their influence on household food choices, but quantitative study findings have been mixed. This may reflect mismatch between variables analyzed and residents' experiences. Our objective was to identify quantitative variables corresponding to neighborhood features caregivers of young children find important for families' food choices. METHODS: In 9 focus groups in English and Spanish among low-income caregivers (n = 51) of young children aged < 5 years in Philadelphia, PA, participants identified feature

Mental health effects of caregiving for older parents in the United Kingdom: the roles of social support, neighborhood cohesion, and neighborhood deprivation.

OBJECTIVES: We investigate whether changes in the mental health of adult children providing care for an older parent or parent-in-law are mediated by perceived social support from relatives and friends and perceived neighborhood social cohesion. We also investigate whether neighborhood deprivation modifies the effects of neighborhood social cohesion or independently influences mental health. METHODS: We fit dynamic panel models to analyze changes in the mental health of caregivers using data from 4 annual waves of a nationally representative UK longitudinal study. We distinguish between inten

Association between neighborhood opportunity and incidence of pediatric trauma.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiology of pediatric trauma and its association with neighborhood opportunity in a large, urban metropolitan area. STUDY DESIGN: This was a multicenter, retrospective, cross-sectional study of pediatric trauma activations in Los Angeles (LA) County between 2010 and 2021. Children under 18 years old with a home zip code in LA County were eligible. Our main exposure was the categorical Child Opportunity Index 2.0 (COI) score for a child's home zip code. The primary outcome was trauma activations per 100,000 children. Our secondary outcomes were variation in injur

Intellectual and physical disability, household living arrangements and COVID-19 outcomes in Scotland: protocol for a retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: While evidence consistently demonstrates elevated COVID-19 risks among people with intellectual and physical disabilities, less is known about how household living arrangements shape these inequalities. Residential setting and household size influence exposure, capacity to isolate and reliance on care yet have rarely been examined jointly with disability status at a population scale. This study aims to estimate disability-related inequalities in COVID-19 infection, hospitalisation and mortality in Scotland and to assess whether residential setting and household size modify these

Historical Neighborhood Redlining and Fertility in a Cohort of US Black Women.

BACKGROUND: Structural racism can manifest in contemporary neighborhoods via historical policies or programs. For example, the Home Owners' Loan Corporation, a government-backed program from the 1930s, systematically diverted wealth away from Black neighborhoods. The reproductive health consequences of this racist program remain understudied. We evaluated associations between residence in a historically redlined neighborhood and fecundability, the per-cycle probability of conception. METHODS: We used data from the Black Women's Health Study, a US cohort of Black women who were aged 21-69 year
