Impact fracture characteristics of intact and crowned human central incisors.

Dynamic fracture energies and patterns of fracture in extracted human central incisors were determined for groups of intact controls, groups with Vita Dur N crowns, Vita Hi Ceram crowns, Dicor crowns and porcelain veneers. Teeth were struck on their middle labial surfaces by a pendulum impact device. The mean fracture energy for teeth with Dicor crowns was significantly lower than for all other groups (P < 0.05). Control tooth crowns fractured obliquely in an apical-direction. Vita Dur N and Dicor crowns shattered, the underlying tooth usually fracturing in the plane of the impact force. Vita

On the degradation mechanics and fatigue strength of resin-dentin interfaces: Identifying weak links of adhesive strategies after prolonged ageing.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the mechanical behavior of resin-dentin bonded interfaces submitted to cyclic loading after a prolonged hydrolytic challenge to better understand long-term failure mechanics under fatigue. METHODS: Resin-dentin twin-bonded interfaces (TBI) were produced on sound midcoronal dentin beams by a mild universal adhesive used in self-etch or etch-and-rinse (H3PO4 etching for 15 s) modes. Composite buildups were made with a nanofilled composite. Bar-shaped TBI specimens (0.9 ×0.9×12 mm) were stored for 24 h or seven years in artificial saliva at 37 °C and tested under 4-point

High bonding strength between zirconia and composite resin based on combined surface treatment for dental restorations.

Zirconia is the preferred material for dental restorations; however, dental restorations are usually affected by zirconia fractures due to chipping and delamination of the veneer ceramic. One effective solution for repairing chemically inert zirconia frameworks is to strongly chemically bond them with the composite resin via surface modification. Thus, the bonding strength between the zirconia and composite resin determines the performance of dental restoration. Herein, we investigate the shear bond strength between zirconia ceramic and two ceramic repair systems before and after thermal cycli

Benefits of Nonthermal Atmospheric Plasma Treatment on Dentin Adhesion.

OBJECTIVES:: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of two nonthermal atmospheric plasma (NTAP) application times and two storage times on the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) to dentin. The influence of NTAP on the mechanical properties of the dentin-resin interface was studied by analyzing nanohardness (NH) and Young's modulus (YM). Water contact angles of pretreated dentin and hydroxyapatite blocks were also measured to assess possible alterations in the surface hydrophilicity upon NTAP. METHODS AND MATERIALS:: Forty-eight human molars were used in a split-tooth design (n=8). Midcoron

Variables related to materials and preparing for bond strength testing irrespective of the test protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Resin bonding can be compared to making a sandwich with the tooth on one side and the restoration on the other, a layer of bonding resin is applied to either side and a filled resin (composite) placed in between. This presentation considers factors that influence the restoration side of the sandwich and various ways that the assembled testpieces may be "aged" prior to testing. The materials to be bonded may be either ceramic, metal or composite formed by methods such as casting, pressing, sintering or machining. The fabrication method determines the susceptibility of the bonding

Antibacterial effect of an ozone device and its comparison with two dentin-bonding systems.

Microorganisms remaining beneath restorations can cause secondary caries and pulp damage. Because of this, antimicrobial treatment could be useful. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial effect of the HealOzone device on Streptococcus mutans and to compare it with the already proven activity of two dentin-bonding systems. Thirty-five human molars were divided into 5 groups. Cavities were then cut into the teeth (n = 28 cavities per group). After sterilization, the teeth were left in broth cultures of 10(6) colony-forming units (CFU) ml(-1) of S. mutans at 36 degrees C for 48 h

Effect of radiation therapy on the dentin bond strength of a universal adhesive.

BACKGROUND: Successful restorative procedures, particularly for patients undergoing head and neck radiotherapy, rely on a robust adhesive interface. Since radiotherapy may alter dental tissues and compromise bonding, this study evaluated how the timing of radiation exposure affects the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of a universal adhesive to dentin with different application modes. METHODS: Forty-two human third molars were used in this study. Mid-coronal dentin was prepared using a low-speed saw and polished with silicon carbide paper. The samples were randomly divided into 3 groups (n =

Restoration of discolored endodontically treated anterior teeth: a minimally invasive chemomechanical approach.

In the case of discolored devitalized anterior teeth, several treatments are available to enhance the esthetic outcome, from noninvasive external/internal bleaching to freehand resin composites and more complex prosthetic solutions such as veneers or full crowns. Innovative computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) chairside technologies and the introduction of new industrially polymerized composite resin blocks coupled with modern adhesive strategies have reduced both biological and financial costs compared to the classic post-core-crown approach. The aim of this article is
