COLORcation: A new application to phenotype exploratory behavior models of anxiety in mice.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral analyses in rodents have successfully delineated the function of many genes and signaling pathways in the brain. Behavioral testing uses highly defined experimental conditions to identify abnormalities in a given mouse strain or genotype. The open field (OF) is widely used to assess both locomotion and anxiety in rodents. In this test, the more a mouse explores and spend time in the center of the arena, the less anxious it is considered to be. However, the simplistic distinction between center and border substantially reduces the information content of the analysis and m

Attenuation of acute restraint stress-induced depressive like behavior and hippocampal alterations with protocatechuic acid treatment in mice.

Protocatechuic acid ethyl ester (PCA), a phenolic compound, exhibits neuroprotective effects through improving endogenous antioxidant enzymatic and nonezymatic system. Based on the role of oxidative stress in modulating depressive disorders and the relationship between neuroprotective and antioxidant potential of PCA, we studied if its antidepressant like effect is associated by modulation of cerebral cortex and hippocampal antioxidant alterations. Acute restraint stress (ARS) is known to induce depressive like behavior by neuronal oxidative damage in mice. Swiss albino mice subjected to ARS e

Assessment of toxicological effects of blood microsampling in the vehicle dosed adult rat.

UNLABELLED: Historically, satellite groups are often used for rodent toxicokinetic profiling because of the haematological consequences of blood sampling. If microsampling is shown to be toxicologically benign, its adoption in rat studies would enable comparison of exposure and toxicity in individual animals (as happens in non-rodent studies) as well as obviating need for satellite groups. METHODS: Groups of 10 male (200-300g) and female (150-250g) rats aged 10weeks were vehicle dosed and either left unsampled, conventional blood volume sampled (6×200μL) or microsampled (6×32μL) on Days 1 and

Group constraint-induced movement therapy for children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE. We investigated the feasibility and effectiveness of group-based constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) for children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy in a clinical setting. METHOD. Seven children received CIMT together under the guidance of two occupational therapy practitioners, 2.5 hr/day, 5 days/wk for 4 wk. We used the Grasping and Visual-Motor Integration subtests of the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales to assess the primary outcome and the Functional Skills and Caregiver Assistance Scales of the Pediatric Evaluation Disability Inventory to assess the secondary outcome. A novel technique to treat Grisel's syndrome: results of a simplified, therapeutical algorithm.

PURPOSE: Grisel's syndrome is a rare entity and usually develops in paediatric patients after otolaryngologic surgery or infection. It is defined as a fixed torticollis combined with a rotatory atlanto-axial subluxation. The success rate of physiotherapy is low. Conventional therapy concepts imply stage-related recommendations based on the Fielding classification (type I-IV). This classification was introduced in 1977 to assess the degree of subluxation between atlas (C1) and axis (C2). Thus, instability increases from type I to IV. Higher stages may require surgical intervention. The purpose

Folic acid prevents depressive-like behavior and hippocampal antioxidant imbalance induced by restraint stress in mice.

Experimental and epidemiological studies have shown the close relationship between stressful events, depression, and cognitive impairment. Folic acid has been reported to present antidepressant-like effects in both experimental and clinical approaches. However, the mechanisms mediating such effects are not understood. In the present study, we evaluated if folic acid administration to mice could protect against restraint stress-induced depressive-like behavior and cognitive deficit. Considering that oxidative stress has been pointed as a key event involved with depressive disorders, cerebrocort

Evaluation of squeeze-induced somnolence in neonatal foals.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that application of a rope restraint device would result in behavioral, electroencephalographic, and humoral changes consistent with sleep and analgesia in neonatal foals. ANIMALS: 8 healthy neonatal foals. PROCEDURES: Following acclimatization to experimental conditions, each foal underwent a series of assessments before and during or at the end of a period of restraint via application of a restraint device (soft linen rope). Assessments included measurements of heart and respiratory rates, rectal temperature, and circulating β-endorphin and steroid hormone

Mechanisms responsible for progesterone's protection against lordosis-inhibiting effects of restraint I. Role of progesterone receptors.

Progestins and antiprogestins are widely used therapeutic agents in humans. In many cases, these are indicated for the treatment of reproductive activities. However, progesterone has widespread physiological effects including a reduction of the response to stress. We have reported that 5 min of restraint reduced lordosis behavior of ovariectomized rats hormonally primed with estradiol benzoate. When ovariectomized rats received both estradiol benzoate and progesterone priming, restraint had minimal effects on lordosis. Progesterone influences behavior through classical intracellular progestero

Mandated nurse staffing ratios in California: a comparison of staffing and nursing-sensitive outcomes pre- and postregulation.

This article examines the impact of mandated nursing ratios in California on key measures of nursing quality among adults in acute care hospitals. This study is a follow-up and extension of our first analysis exploring nurse staffing and nursing-sensitive outcomes comparing 2002 pre-ratios regulation data to 2004 postratios regulation data. For the current study we used postregulation ratios data from 2004 and 2006 to assess trends in staffing and outcomes. Findings for nurse staffing affirmed the trends noted in 2005 and indicated that changes in nurse staffing were consistent with expected i

Plastic femoral deformity in a 9-year-old Boy.

We report the case of a 9-year-old boy who sustained a closed middiaphyseal plastic femoral deformation after a motor vehicle accident. The patient was treated nonoperatively with protected weightbearing to the involved extremity. Although he showed symptomatic improvement at early and intermediate followups, the patient did not show radiographic evidence of substantial injury remodeling and was left with a persistent anatomic valgus deformity 19 months postinjury. We were unable to identify prior reports of femoral plastic deformation in a child.

[Hypothalamic control of the myoelectric activity of the gastric antrum in rabbits during acute emotional stress].

During the experiments on the rabbits immobilized, which were undergone one day food deprivation, the influence of electric irritation of the lateral hypothalamus "hunger center" in condition of the acute emotional stress, that appears under unreinforcement of the artificially amplified hunger motivated excitation with food, which is located on the close but not reachable distance from animals, has been studied. It has been proved that increase of the alimentary motivation intensity in the process of the double-side turn-by-turn electric stimulation of digestive hypothalamic centers and appear

Effects of rest-duration, time-of-day and their interaction on periodic leg movements while awake in restless legs syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The diagnostic criteria for restless legs syndrome (RLS) indicate that both time-of-day and rest effects induce or aggravate symptoms. Periodic limb movements while awake (PLMW) provide an objective motor sign of RLS that can be measured during an awake suggested immobilization test (SIT). This study uses the SIT at different times of the day and analyzes time-of-day and duration-of-rest effects and their interaction on the PLMW. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight RLS patients who were not on medications had SIT tests at 10 pm, 8 am and 4 pm on two consecutive days. PL

Restraint stress augments postprandial gastric contractions but impairs antropyloric coordination in conscious rats.

Central corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) plays an important role in mediating restraint stress-induced delayed gastric emptying. However, it is unclear how restraint stress modulates gastric motility to delay gastric emptying. Inasmuch as solid gastric emptying is regulated via antropyloric coordination, we hypothesized that restraint stress impairs antropyloric coordination, resulting in delayed solid gastric emptying in conscious rats. Two strain gauge transducers were sutured onto the serosal surface of the antrum and pylorus, and postprandial gastric motility was monitored before, duri

Roles of nocturnal melatonin and the pineal gland in modulation of water-immersion restraint stress-induced gastric mucosal lesions in rats.

The roles of melatonin and the pineal gland in the circadian variation of water-immersion restraint stress-induced gastric mucosal lesions in rats were investigated. Fasted rats were subjected to water-immersion restraint stress during both the diurnal and nocturnal phases of a light:dark cycle. Pinealectomized and sham-operated rats were also subjected to water-immersion restraint stress at night. The lesion area after 4 hr of stress during the dark phase was significantly lower than in light-phase controls. Pinealectomy increased the lesion area in the dark phase, compared to the sham operat

Deer health and disease.

This paper describes the most significant diseases of farmed deer which have emerged over the last 30 or so years. It describes their characteristic signs, how control measures have evolved, their current status and gives an indication of future diagnostic and control measures. Overall, it shows that wild deer brought into a farming environment have developed some of the production limiting diseases which affect sheep and cattle, such as parasitism and trace element deficiencies. In addition, farmed deer are susceptible to potentially fatal diseases such as tuberculosis, malignant catarrhal fe

Dissociation between MK-801- and captivity-induced stereotypies in bank voles.

Pharmacologically induced stereotypies (PHIS) following dopamine agonists and, more recently, the non-competitive NMDA antagonist dizocilpine (MK-801), are used to study human psychopathology and for screening potential neuroleptic drugs. On the other hand, bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) spontaneously develop stereotyped jumping in barren cages, already before the age of 1 month (= captivity-induced stereotypies or CIS). Large interindividual differences in the level of jumping exist. In this study, the effect of MK-801 on various behaviours of bank voles, and in particular the relations

Effect of restraint stress on feeding behavior of rats.

The expression of appetite reflects the complex functioning of a psychobiological system organized in different levels closely related to each other, in which emotional changes can influence feeding behavior. Benzodiazepines are widely used as anxiolytics and can change behaviors caused by stress. The aim of the present study was to verify the feeding behavior of rats, submitted or not to fasting, after acute and chronic restraint stress. We also evaluated the response to the ingestion of sweet food of chronically restrained animals after the administration of diazepam. Male adult Wistar rats

Differential audiogenic seizure sensitization by selective unilateral substantia nigra lesions in resistant Wistar rats.

Evaluation of the participation of different substantia nigra sites in the sensitization of resistant (R) animals to audiogenic seizures (AS), was performed after series of small (5 mC; n = 28), medium (10 mC; n = 57) and large (15 mC; 3 points of 5 mC each, n = 19) unilateral electrolytic lesions of the substantia nigra (SN) in R rats. Animals were evaluated at 5, 10, 15, and 30 days post surgery and behavior was measured by a neuroethological method. Small unilateral lesions induced AS susceptibility in 14% R animals with 3% of them displaying tonic-clonic AS. Medium sized lesions induced AS
