Selective Vulnerability of Brainstem Nuclei in Distinct Tauopathies: A Postmortem Study.

The brainstem nuclei of the reticular formation (RF) are critical for regulating homeostasis, behavior, and cognition. RF degenerates in tauopathies including Alzheimer disease (AD), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), and corticobasal degeneration (CBD). Although the burden of phopho-tau inclusion is high across these diseases, suggesting a similar vulnerability pattern, a distinct RF-associated clinical phenotype in these diseases indicates the opposite. To compare patterns of RF selective vulnerability to tauopathies, we analyzed 5 RF nuclei in tissue from 14 AD, 14 CBD, 10 PSP, and 3 con…

Adult moyamoya disease associated with abundant phosphorylated tau accumulation in the brainstem: Report of a case with autopsy findings.

She experienced her first intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) at … ctive neurons and neurites were observed in the pons and midbrain, mainly in the locus ceruleus and reticular formation in the midbrain. Several AT8-immunoreactive neurons and neurites were positive for Gallyas silver staining. A few tiny and short AT8-immunoreactive processes were observed in the molecular, Purkinje cell and granular layers of the cerebellum. There …

Distribution of hyaluronan in the central nervous system of the frog.

The qualitative and quantitative distribution pattern of hyaluronan (HA), a component of the extracellular matrix (ECM), was studied in the … bulocochlear nuclei, the superior olive, the spinal tract of the trigeminal nerve, and parts of the reticular formation showed the most intense reaction in the PN. In the spinal cord, considerable HA staining was found in the white matter and around the perikarya of motoneurons. The present study is the first description of the HA-positive areas of frog brain and spi …

Convergence of multiple pelvic organ inputs in the rat rostral medulla.

Electrophysiological recordings were used to investigate the degree of pelvic/visceral convergent inputs onto single medullary reticular formation (MRF) neurons. A total of 94 MRF neurons responsive to bilateral electrical stimulation of the pelvic nerve (PN) in 12 urethane-anaesthetized male rats were tested for responses to mechanical stimulation of the urinary bladder, urethra, colon and penis, and electrical stimulation of the dorsal nerve of the penis (DNP) and abdominal branches of the vagus. Responses to distension of the bladder were found for 51% (n = 48) of the MRF neurons tested. Of…

The synaptic organization of VMH neurons that mediate the effects of estrogen on sexual behavior.

Estrogen acts in the hypothalamic ventromedial nucleus (VMH) of female rats to promote sexual behavior, as typified by the lordosis response … the lumbar epaxial muscles, it was sequentially detected in the lumbar ventral horn, the medullary reticular formation, the periaqueductal gray, and finally the VMH. Subsequent analysis showed that the population of VMH neurons that were initially infected with PRV largely resided beyond the cluster of estrogen receptor-containing neurons. In a separate study, VMH n …

Endosteal surfaces in hyperparathyroidism: an enzyme cytochemical study on low-temperature-processed, glycol-methacrylate-embedded bone biopsies.

Alkaline phosphatase (AlP) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) activities have been studied comparatively in needle biopsies of the iliac crest of four cases of secondary hyperparathyroidism (renal osteodystrophy). AlP activity was associated with the plasma membrane of osteoblasts and their processes, of reticular cells of bone marrow and of young osteocytes of osteoid borders and woven bone. Moreover, it was detected in the fibroblast-like cells of the endosteal "fibrosis". These cells were orderly in arrangement and were parallel to the endosteal surfaces near zones of bone forma

The transcriptional program during germinal center reaction - a close view at GC B cells, Tfh cells and Tfr cells.

The germinal center (GC) reaction is a key process during an adaptive immune response to T cell specific antigens. GCs are specialized structures within secondary lymphoid organs, in which B cell proliferation, somatic hypermutation and antibody affinity maturation occur. As a result, high affinity antibody secreting plasma cells and memory B cells are generated. An effective GC response needs interaction between multiple cell types. Besides reticular cells and follicular dendritic cells, particularly B cells, T follicular helper (Tfh) cells as well as T follicular regulatory (Tfr) cells are a

Tissue accumulation of neutrophil extracellular traps mediates muscle hyperalgesia in a mouse model.

Accumulation of uric acid (UA) during muscular trauma is a factor involved in the development of muscle hyperalgesia. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), DNA-based reticular structures to capture UA, play a central role in the pain onset of gout attacks; however, the involvement of NETs via the elevation of local UA level in muscle hyperalgesia due to injuries from muscle overuse remains unknown. The triceps surae muscles (TSMs) in the unilateral hindlimb of mice were electrically stimulated to induce excessive muscle contraction. Mechanical withdrawal thresholds, tissue UA levels, neutroph

Predicting Prognosis Based on Regional Prevalence, Ulcer Morphology and Treatment Strategy in Vision-Threatening Pythium insidiosum Keratitis.

Pythium insidiosum is an oomycete belonging to the phylum Straminipila and family Pythiaceae. It causes rapidly progressive vision-threatening keratitis. Clinically, microbiologically and morphologically, it closely resembles fungal keratitis; hence it is also labelled as a "parafungus". The clinical features mimicking fungus are subepithelial and stromal infiltrate, endo-exudates, corneal melt and hypopyon. The hallmark features of Pythium are tentacular projections, reticular dot-like infiltrate, peripheral furrowing and thinning, and rapid limbal spread. Microbiological corneal smearing on

Thymosin Beta 15 Alters the Spatial Development of Thymic Epithelial Cells.

The thymus is the most sensitive organ under various pathophysiological conditions, such as aging, starvation, and infection. As a key stromal cell for T cell development, it is well-known that thymic epithelial cells (TECs) play an important role in the thymus response to the external environment. Thymosin beta 15 (Tβ15) is a G-actin binding protein secreted by TECs, it plays an important role in maintaining the dynamic balance of actin, angiogenesis, axonal formation, and wound healing, but the relationship between Tβ15 and TECs is not clear yet. Here, we show the impact of Tβ15 on the TEC's
