Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is a rare disease and has a high risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD). This retrospective study was carried out with the objective to study the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic characteristics of RPF and identify the risk factors associated with its progression to CKD. We present the case of a male patient with post traumatic retroperitoneal fibrosis whose main clinical expression was low-back pain. Diagnosis was established using CAT-scan and MRI, which revealed a large mass of soft tissue that almost entirely enveloped the abdominal aorta. Treatment with 40 mg of prednisone every 24 hours was established. This is the third report on retroperitoneal fibrosis occurring during the course of ulcerative colitis. Six cases of idiopathic fibrosis are presented to demonstrate the different manifestations of the disease and the efficiency of CT and MRI. In addition to the most common form, retroperitoneal fibrosis (Ormond's disease), fibrosis was seen in the mediastinum and pelvis. The inflammatory aortic aneurysm is a special variant. The goal of our study was to evaluate peritoneal and retroperitoneal healing and therefore to assess the optimal date for surgery after laparoscopic lymphadenectomy. A para-aortic lymphadenectomy was carried out in 5 groups of 5 New Zealand female rabbits. A patient with retroperitoneal fibrosis and right peritracheal and hilar lymphadenopathy was studied using gallium-67-citrate. Between 1974 and 1988 17 patients with retroperitoneal fibrosis were seen in our hospital. 9 patients received medical and surgical treatment: first ureterolysis with intraperitoneal displacement following an immunosuppressive therapy. 6 patients received only immunosuppressive therapy. 1 patient only received surgical treatment. 1 patient showed spontaneous remission. The results of our study confirm that the combined surgical and medical treatment is a good therapy of retroperitoneal fibrosis. A case of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (IRF) in an 14 year old boy is presented. The diagnosis was mislead by the pelvic localization. One year after the biopsy and without any treatment, the scanner control shows the regression of the fibrotic plaque. The authors review the literature of this condition. They recall the principal clinic features of IRF in the children. A discussion of current diagnostic procedures and treatment is presented.
