Folic acid: friend or foe in cancer therapy.

Folic acid plays a crucial role in diverse biological processes, notably cell maturation and proliferation. Here, we performed a literature review using articles listed in electronic databases, such as PubMed, Scopus, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar. In this review article, we describe contradictory data regarding the role of folic acid in cancer development and progression. While some studies have confirmed its beneficial effects in diminishing the risk of various cancers, others have reported a potential carcinogenic effect. The current narrative review elucidates these conflicting data by highl

Neuropharmacological effect of risperidone: From chemistry to medicine.

As the second-oldest atypical antipsychotic, risperidone has a long history of off-label usage for treating behavioural and psychological signs and symptoms of dementia (BPSD), such as agitation, aggressiveness, and psychosis. Risperidone has been shown in several trials to have a statistically significant benefit when used in a therapeutic context. Several lines of evidence suggest a possible role of risperidone via the antagonistic effect of Dopamine D2 and 5HT-receptor in different neurological diseases like cognitive dysfunction of schizophrenia, neuroinflammation, Huntington's disease, an

Hypnic Headache Responds to Topiramate: A Case Report and a Review of Mechanisms of Action of Therapeutic Agents.

Hypnic headaches are unique as they are exclusively nocturnal, occurring in rapid-eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep. Their nocturnal nature suggests a role for cyclic mechanisms involving the hypothalamus despite conflicting imaging results for the role of the posterior hypothalamus. Nevertheless, pharmacological therapeutics acting as highly effective agents, such as caffeine and melatonin, can modulate the sleep-wake cycle. In addition, indole agents such as indomethacin that are anti-nociceptive and affect cerebral blood flow also prove to be efficacious. Gabanoids and topiramate also ha

Semantic future thinking and executive functions at age 4: The moderating role of frontal brain electrical activity.

Previous studies provide conflicting results regarding the relation between future thinking and executive functioning during early childhood. Furthermore, little is known of the neural mechanisms involved in future thinking during early childhood. We examined the moderating role of frontal electroencephalogram (EEG) activity on the relation between executive functioning and semantic future thinking performance in a sample of 4-year-old children. Our results suggest that frontal EEG moderates the relation between executive functioning and semantic future thinking performance, but only for mediu

The Role of Textiles in Dermatitis: An Update.

Dermatitis has important implications for individuals who are affected. It can significantly impair function and quality of life. Dermatitis is multi-factorial and often includes elements of atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and irritant contact dermatitis in a co-existent manner. Textiles are in contact with the human skin for extended periods of time and as a result, they are an important part of the cutaneous environment. Thus, it is not surprising that textiles play a major role in both the etiology and the treatment of various types of dermatitis. This review discusses the r

Role of placenta growth factor in cancer and inflammation.

Accumulating evidences have documented that angiogenesis is closely linked to inflammation and regulators of angiogenesis play key roles in various inflammatory conditions. PlGF is an angiogenic protein belonging to the VEGF family and is upregulated mainly in pathologic conditions. Recently, PlGF was discovered having a proinflammatory role in inflammatory arthritis and its serum level drew attention not only as a useful surrogate biomarker but also a potential therapeutic target in atherosclerosis and various cancers. Particularly, PlGF has attractive clinical values because endogenous PlGF

Wound-healing modulation in upper airway stenosis-Myths and facts.

Wound healing plays a major role in the development of acquired subglottic stenosis. Pharmacologic treatment of subglottic stenosis must address both physiologic and pathologic healing processes. The relevant Pubmed and Ovid databases from 1960 to 2007 were systematically searched. Several modulating agents have been tested. Most of them were poorly investigated. Three modalities were thoroughly studied-steroids and antibiotics, mitomycin, and antireflux medications. However, there are conflicting data regarding their role in preventing and treating subglottic stenosis. Current data support to

Monozygous twins with a microdeletion syndrome involving BTK, DDP1, and two other genes; evidence of intact dendritic cell development and TLR responses.

UNLABELLED: We report for the first time monozygous twins with a microdeletion syndrome involving genes coding for Bruton's tyrosine kinase (Btk) and deafness-dystonia peptide 1 (DDP1), and two other genes. Apart from its essential role in B cell development, Btk is indicated to affect signaling mediated by toll like receptors (TLRs) and development of dendritic cells (DCs) but results are conflictive. The twins revealed normal numbers of plasmacytoid and myeloid DCs (pDCs and mDCs). Moreover, BTK null cells from these patients exhibited robust responses to TLR agonists, normal natural killer

Novel strategies: challenge loop diuretics and sodium management in heart failure--part II.

The conflicting results of diuretic treatments in heart failure (HF) and the importance of Na management in the context of the cardiorenal syndrome and neurohormonal activation in HF have suggested novel and counterintuitive strategies, focused primarily on the use of vasopressin antagonists and hypertonic saline solution with high doses of loop diuretics and their neurohormonal interference. The emerging novel therapies involving direct inhibition of vasopressin receptors appear to show promising results. The use of hypertonic saline solution mixed with a high dose of loop diuretics produces,

Case management services for injured workers. Providers' perspectives.

The perceptions of service providers involved in case management services are described here. The service providers included claims managers, occupational nurse consultants, attending physicians, and nurse case managers. The purposes of this phase of the study were to describe these providers' perceptions about the case management program; to organize findings according to the quality assessment model that guided this study (including structure, function, and outcomes); and to identify barriers and facilitators to satisfaction with case management services. Structural factors that affected ser

Selenium and cardiovascular diseases--an update.

Dietary deficiency of selenium has been incriminated in the etiology of cardiovascular diseases. Thus, cardiomyopathy associated with low selenium intake has been described in areas of exceptionally low selenium intake and in patients receiving total parenteral nutrition. Epidemiological studies have provided some evidence for the role of selenium deficiency in the etiology of atherosclerotic disease. An inverse association between the incidence of ischaemic heart disease and selenium intake has been described in population comparisons. The results of longitudinal studies within populations ar

Claws, consequences and coexistence: Local community attitudes toward large carnivores in mountain landscapes.

Human attitudes toward large carnivores are shaped by multiple interrelated socio-psychological factors, yet conservation interventions often focus on reducing material impacts while paying less attention to underlying attitude drivers. We investigated attitudes towards three large carnivore species: Persian leopard (Panthera pardus), grey wolf (Canis lupus), and brown bear (Ursus arctos) among communities around Golestan National Park, Iran. Using interview data from 292 participants across 30 villages, we applied Bayesian structural equation modelling to examine how cognitive beliefs, social

Metabotropic Glutamatergic Signaling Adaptively Controls Trans-thalamic Communication.

Trans-thalamic circuits link cortical regions through higher-order sensory (HOs) thalamic nuclei to support cognition. These circuits are rich with metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs), whose seconds-long dynamics conflict with the thalamus's traditional relay role, leaving their function unknown. Here, we present a model of group I mGluR-mediated suppression of K + leak currents in single neurons. Including mGluRs in a trans-thalamic network of spiking neurons revealed distinct modulatory roles for thalamocortical and corticothalamic mGluRs. In pyramidal neurons, thalamocortical mGluRs s

The association between family environment and problematic internet use in adolescents: The mediating role of self-control and psychological capital, and the moderating role of gender.

Over the past decade, problematic Internet use (PIU) has emerged as a major global health concern, particularly among adolescents. This study examined the influence of the family environment on PIU, focusing on the mediating roles of self-control and psychological capital (PsyCap), and the moderating role of gender. A sample of 559 first-year high school students in Shiraz (287 boys, 272 girls) was selected through multistage cluster sampling during the 2022-2023 academic year. Structural equation modeling was employed to test the proposed hypotheses. The results indicated that a supportive fa

Maternal Borderline Personality Disorder Severity and Parenting Behaviors During Conflict Discussions With Adolescent Offspring.

Examining the impact of maternal borderline personality disorder (BPD) on parent-child interactions could elucidate pathways of intergenerational risk and inform intervention. The current study used an expanded version of the Observing Mediational Interactions to investigate (a) associations between maternal BPD symptom severity and mediational parenting behaviors during conflict discussions with clinically referred early adolescent offspring (N = 56, age = 10-15, 54% female) and their mothers, and (b) the potential moderating role of early adolescent BPD symptom severity in those associations

Leisure and cultural identity: an empirical study based on root-seeking summer camp for ethnic Chinese new generation.

This study examines the role of root-seeking summer camps in enhancing Chinese cultural identity among the new ethnic Chinese generation (ECNG) amidst the challenges of globalization. Semi-structured interviews with thirty campers revealed that ECNG often lack clear ethnic consciousness, experience conflict in community relationships, and have limited opportunities for traditional cultural experiences. The study found that summer camps exert both intrinsic and extrinsic influences on campers. Intrinsically, they facilitate the internalization of leisure motivation, foster a deepened leisure ex

Finding the fragments: community-based epidemic surveillance in Sudan.

Sudan faces inter-sectional health risks posed by escalating violent conflict, natural hazards and epidemics. Epidemics are frequent and overlapping, particularly resurgent seasonal outbreaks of diseases such as malaria, cholera. To improve response, the Sudanese Ministry of Health manages multiple disease surveillance systems, however, these systems are fragmented, under resourced, and disconnected from epidemic response efforts. Inversely, civic and informal community-led systems have often organically led outbreak responses, despite having limited access to data and resources from formal ou

Telework and Face-to-Face Work during COVID-19 Confinement: The Predictive Factors of Work-Related Stress from a Holistic Point of View.

This article explores the socio-labor conditions in which people worked during confinement, analyzing the predictors of work-related stress, according to work modality (face-to-face or teleworking), from a holistic and quantitative (n = 328) point of view. To identify predictors of stress, correlational analyses and multiple hierarchical regressions were conducted with individual, organizational, and societal variables. Furthermore, to analyze the possible modulating role of gender, caregiving, and the level of responsibility in organizations in the relationship between predictor variables and

COVID-19 response in northwest Syria: innovation and community engagement in a complex conflict.

Despite lacking capacity and resources, the health system in the northwest Syria is using innovative approaches for the containment of COVID-19. Lessons drawn from previous outbreaks in the region, such as the polio outbreak in 2013 and the annual seasonal influenza, have enabled the Early Warning and Response Network, a surveillance system to develop mechanisms of predicting risk and strengthening surveillance for the new pandemic. Social media tools such as WhatsApp are effectively collecting health information and communicating health messaging about COVID-19. Community engagement has also

Does Childhood Psychological Abuse Contribute to Intimate Partner Violence Victimization? An Investigation Using the Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse Interview.

Although psychological abuse is recognized as a particularly insidious form of child abuse, research on the impact of this type of abuse related to intimate partner violence (IPV) is scant. This study examined the contribution of childhood psychological abuse to IPV in female victims and non-victims. Furthermore, it investigated the role of cumulative abuse in predicting IPV. The study included 38 women victims of IPV and 40 non-IPV women. All participants were investigated using the Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse Interview (CECA); the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2) and the IPV
