Combined intra-extra-articular technique for stabilisation of coxofemoral luxation. Preliminary results in two dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To report a new technique for repairing traumatic cranio-dorsal coxofemoral luxation in dogs. METHODS: Stabilisation of hip luxation was carried out in two dogs: a one-year-old male Border Collie and an eight-year-old female American Staffordshire Bull Terrier. A caudal approach was performed to expose the hip joint. Following this, a 2.5 mm hole was drilled through the acetabular wall at the original attachment of the round ligament, followed by a tunnel between the fovea capitis and the proximal third of the femur. Nylon tape was tied in a clove hitch knot around the femoral neck

Unusual causes of varicose veins in the lower extremities: CT venographic and Doppler US findings.

There are various causes of varicose veins in the lower extremities. Among the causes are venous insufficiency of the saphenofemoral junction, saphenopopliteal junction, or usual perforating veins. Traditionally, Doppler ultrasonography (US) has been used for evaluation of varicose veins. Sometimes, varicose veins arise from an unexpected anatomic source; in these cases, computed tomographic (CT) venography can provide an overview of the varicose veins. Doppler US with complementary CT venography is useful for determining the precise cause of varicose veins. Between November 2003 and March 200

[Extraperitoneal transomphalic drainage of the posthydatid hepatic restant cavity by coelioscopic approach].

Being often biliary contaminated and suppurative, the hydatid hepatic cyst is in fact a real parasitic abscess. So far its surgical approach represents the only credible possibility of treatment. Authors impart their experience regarding the external drainage of the restant posthydatid cavity, by using a completely extraperitoneal way of bringing out the drain, by means of the round ligament, an original method conceived and put into practice by Prof. D. Burlui in 1968. This technique is simple, without risks or complications, possible for most of the parasite hepatic locations, especially for

Paraovarian cyst: MR imaging features.

BACKGROUND: Paraovarian cysts are common intrapelvic neoplasms, but the magnetic resonance (MR) findings of paraovarian cyst have never been reported. We investigated the spectrum of MR imaging features of paraovarian cyst. METHODS: MR images of 18 paraovarian cysts in 16 patients were reviewed retrospectively. MR images were evaluated for the size and location of paraovarian cysts, single or multicystic, signal intensity on T1- and T2-weighted images, and visualization of the normal ovary on the affected side. RESULTS: The normal ovary of the affected side was recognized in 13 lesions. Four

Microfissure in the oval window area.

Examination of 331 human temporal bones revealed the presence of microfissure in the oval window area in 25%. The youngest temporal bone in which the microfissure was observed was from a child eight years old and the oldest temporal bone was from an individual 102 years old. It appears that hte microfissure in this area occurs extremely rarely before 10 years of age, that it begins to be observed after the age of 10, and that the incidence of this fissure increases sharply at about age 40. In 61% of the bones in which the microfissure was observed, it was present both superior and inferior to

Preventive procedure of dysuria after radical hysterectomy by adnexal flap fixation to the bladder.

To prevent postoperative dysuria, which occurs inevitably after the radical hysterectomy, several surgical procedures have been tried. The principal method is to suture adnexal flaps to the bladder trigone and fundus. Of four procedures so far tried sequentially, the best one was to fix the bladder trigone and to support it with round ligament flaps sutured with the bladder fundus covered by tubal flaps (Type IV). In follow-up studies, Type IV proved more preferable than the other three types or the non-sutured control group in regard to the following aspects: (1) days necessary for the disapp

The Impact of Sacrospinous Hysteropexy and Vaginal Hysterectomy With Suspension of the Uterosacral Ligaments on Sexual Function in Women With Uterine Prolapse: A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Comparative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Studies on pelvic organ prolapse (POP) surgery show conflicting evidence regarding the impact of uterus preservation and hysterectomy on sexual function and no large randomized trials with long-term follow-up have been published on this topic. AIMS: The aim of this secondary analysis was to evaluate and compare sexual function after sacrospinous hysteropexy and vaginal hysterectomy with suspension of the uterosacral ligaments in women with uterine prolapse. METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of the SAVE U trial data, a multicenter trial in 4 nonuniversity hospitals in the Ne

Anatomical basis of neuropathies and damage to the ilioinguinal nerve during repairs of groin hernias. (about 100 dissections).

Surgical access to the inguinal region, notably during hernia repairs, exposes the ilioinguinal nerve to the risk of damage at the origin of the neuralgia. The incidence of these post-operative neuropathies and their medicolegal consequences justify this study about the anatomical variations of the ilioinguinal nerve. With the aim of preventing its damage during repairs of groin hernias and identifying the factors of onset of chronic spontaneous neuropathy of the ilioinguinal nerve, we dissected 100 inguinal regions of 51 fresh adult corpses. The nerve was absent in seven cases and double in o

Mechano Growth Factor Accelerates ACL Repair and Improves Cell Mobility of Mechanically Injured Human ACL Fibroblasts by Targeting Rac1-PAK1/2 and RhoA-ROCK1 Pathways.

Exceeded mechanical stress leads to a sublethal injury to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) fibroblasts, and it will hinder cell mobility and ACL regeneration, and even induce osteoarthritis. The mechano growth factor (MGF) could be responsible for mechanical stress and weakening its negative effects on cell physiological behaviors. In this study, effects of MGF on cell mobility and relevant molecules expression in injured ACL fibroblasts were detected. After an injurious mechanical stretch, the analysis carried out, at 0 and 24 h, respectively, showed that the cell area, roundness, migration,

Intraoperative Physical Examination for Diagnosis of Interosseous Ligament Rupture-Cadaveric Study.

PURPOSE: To study the intraobserver and interobserver reliability of the diagnosis of interosseous ligament (IOL) rupture in a cadaver model. METHODS: On 12 fresh frozen cadavers, radial heads were cut using an identical incision and osteotomy. After randomization, the soft tissues of the limbs were divided into 4 groups: both IOL and triangular fibrocartilage (TFCC) intact; IOL disruption but TFCC intact; both IOL and TFCC divided; and IOL intact but TFCC divided. All incisions had identical suturing. After standard instruction and demonstration of radius pull-push and radius lateral pull te

Acute radial ulno-humeral ligament injury in patients with chronic lateral epicondylitis: an observational report.

PURPOSE: Lateral elbow pain has multiple etiologies; most common is lateral epicondylitis. Radio-capitellar arthritis, posterolateral rotatory instability (PLRI), plica and radial tunnel syndromes may produce similar pain. The purpose of this study is to report on a rare subset of patients who had an acute injury during treatment for chronic lateral epicondylitis, exacerbating symptoms and lessening function. Indications for surgery were a failure of another round of nonoperative management and diagnosis of a new injury to the lateral ligaments in addition to the lateral epicondylitis. Surgica

Epithelioid leiomyosarcoma of the vulva: report of a rare case and literature review.

Leiomyosarcoma of the vulva is a rare soft tissue sarcoma that accounts for approximately 1% of all primary vulvar neoplasms, but it is the most common type of vulvar sarcoma. It usually originates from the smooth muscle within erectile tissue or blood vessel walls, the round ligament, the dartos muscle or the arrector pili muscle. No treatment algorithms have been established to date. Surgical resection is preferred for vulvar leiomyosarcoma. Currently, the recommended surgical method is extensive local resection with a safe surgical margin of at least 2 cm. The use of chemoradiotherapy for v

Peripheral Giant Cell Granuloma in a Child Associated with Ectopic Eruption and Traumatic Habit with Control of Four Years.

Peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) is a nonneoplastic lesion that may affect any region of the gingiva or alveolar mucosa of edentulous and toothed areas, preferentially in the mandible and rarely occurring in children. This report describes the clinical and histopathological findings of a PGCG diagnosed in the maxilla of a 9-year-old boy associated with a tooth erupting improperly and a traumatic habit. The patient did not present anything noteworthy on extraoral physical examination or medical history, but the habit of picking his teeth and "poking" the gingiva. The oral lesion consisted

Comparison of the distribution pattern of PEG-b-PCL polymersomes delivered into the rat inner ear via different methods.

CONCLUSION: Cochleostomy is the most efficient approach in delivering PEG-b-PCL polymersomes (PMs) to the inner ear. PMs can be delivered to the vestibule by transtympanic injection or cochleostomy. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficiency of delivering PEG-b-PCL PMs into the inner ear using different approaches. METHODS: The PEG-b-PCL PMs were administered either by sustained topical round window membrane (RWM) delivery using gelatin sponge pledgets in combination with an osmotic pump, transtympanic injection, or cochleostomy. The distribution of the PMs in the inner ear was observed by confoc

Isolated torsion of the hydrosalpinx in a postmenopausal woman.

OBJECTIVES: Isolated torsion of the fallopian tube is an uncommon cause of acute lower abdominal pain. It is often found in reproductive-age women and is found less in prepubertal and perimenopausal women. METHODS: We describe a 70-year-old postmenopausal woman who presented with lower abdominal pain and discomfort. Ultrasonography revealed a well-defined, echo-free cystic mass measuring 5.3 cm x 5.8 cm without septations. Laparoscopic examination showed a dark-red, round-shaped cystic lesion that twisted at the right infundibulo-pelvic ligament site in the right adnexa area with adhesion to

The development of the gubernaculum and inguinal closure in the marsupial Macropus eugenii.

This study reports the developmental anatomy of testicular descent and inguinal closure of the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii) from birth to maturity. In females the ovary migrated caudally between days 10 and 20 after birth. The gubernaculum differentiates into the round ligament in the abdomen and extra-abdominally as the ilio-marsupialis muscle of the mammary glands. In males the testes migrated to the internal inguinal ring by day 20 post partum (pp), coinciding with the enlargement of the gubernaculum, and from the internal inguinal ring to the scrotum between days 20 and 65 pp. During

Concurrent Inguinal Endometriosis and Catamenial Pneumothorax: A Case Report.

Endometriosis, while prevalent, can manifest in extra-pelvic locations with varying degrees of rarity, but reports of multiple extra-pelvic sites within a patient are extremely rare. We report a unique case of a 45-year-old female with concurrent inguinal endometriosis and catamenial pneumothorax. The patient experienced recurrent menstruation-associated right chest pain and subsequently developed right inguinal pain. A laparoscopic-assisted en bloc resection of the round ligament and associated inguinal mass was performed. Intraoperative findings were consistent with pelvic endometriosis. Hor
