Induced ruminative and mindful self-focus in daily life across the menstrual cycle in women with and without premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Rumination and mindfulness are transdiagnostic risk and protective factors while their role in Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is unclear. Thus, we aimed to investigate the cycle-phase-specific effects of rumination and mindful self-focus on momentary mood and cognitions in women with and without PMDD. This study involved brief ambulatory inductions of ruminative and mindful self-focus along with ambulatory assessments of negative (NA) and positive affect (PA), and rumination, present-moment-awareness (PMA) and self-acceptance on two days during both the follicular and late luteal phase

Post-Traumatic Growth in Adult Cancer Survivors: A Scoping Review of Psychological Factors, Predictors, and Interventions.

Post-traumatic growth (PTG), defined as positive psychological changes following trauma, has garnered attention in recent years within the context of cancer. This scoping review aims to synthesise and map PTG-related studies published in the last 5 years among adult cancer populations. A comprehensive literature search identified 109 eligible studies published between 2018 and 2023, predominantly cross-sectional in design, focusing on various cancer types, with a significant proportion examining breast cancer. The findings reveal that PTG is consistently associated with cognitive, emotional, s

Self-focused Cognitive Styles and Bipolar Spectrum Disorders: Concurrent and Prospective Associations.

We examined concurrent and prospective associations of self-focused cognitive styles with bipolar spectrum disorders. Controlling for depressive and hypomanic/manic symptoms, 125 individuals with bipolar spectrum disorders scored higher than 149 demographically similar normal controls on the rumination scale of the Response Styles Questionnaire (RSQ) and the private self-consciousness subscale of the Self-Consciousness Scale (SCS). The two groups did not differ on the distraction scale of the RSQ or the public self-consciousness and social anxiety subscales of the SCS. In addition, among the b

Interpersonal forgiving in close relationships: II. Theoretical elaboration and measurement.

Interpersonal forgiving was conceptualized in the context of a 2-factor motivational system that governs people's responses to interpersonal offenses. Four studies were conducted to examine the extent to which forgiving could be predicted with relationship-level variables such as satisfaction, commitment, and closeness; offense-level variables such as apology and impact of the offense; and social-cognitive variables such as offender-focused empathy and rumination about the offense. Also described is the development of the transgression-related interpersonal motivations inventory--a self-report

Mindsets at work: unpacking the effects of work-care conflict and rumination on employee creativity.

PURPOSE: This study examines the mechanisms through which employee mindset influences creativity, analyzing the antecedent role of work-care conflict, the mediating effect of creative self-efficacy, and the moderating role of work-related rumination. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Using a two-wave time-lagged survey design, data were collected from 324 employee-supervisor dyads across five high-tech enterprises. Structural equation modeling was employed for data analysis. FINDINGS: Work interfering with caregiving negatively affects growth mindset while positively affecting fixed mindset. Care

The mediating role of rumination in the relationship between traumatic childbirth perception, birth satisfaction, and postpartum depressive symptoms.

This study was conducted to examine the mediating role of ruminative thinking in the relationship between perceived traumatic birth, birth satisfaction, and postpartum depressive symptoms among mothers receiving care in the postpartum unit. This descriptive study was conducted between April and December 2024 and included 309 postpartum women. Data were collected within the first 24-48 hour postpartum using the Personal Information Form, the Visual Analog Scale for Birth Satisfaction (VAS-BS), the Traumatic Childbirth Perception Scale (TCPS), the Ruminative Response Scale (RRS), and the Edinbur

Trajectories and Influences of Depression in Adolescents: A Latent Profile Transition Analysis Study.

Depression has become increasingly prevalent among adolescents, posing significant challenges for mental health professionals. While most studies on depression adopt a cross-sectional perspective or a variable-centred approach, these methods often fail to illuminate the developmental trajectories of depression in individuals. We employed Latent Profile Transition Analysis (LPTA), a person-centred approach, to analyse longitudinal data from a large adolescent sample (N = 978; Mage = 16.26, SD = 0.89; 52.2% females). This study aimed to identify distinct subgroups of depression and observe trans

It takes two to co-ruminate: Examining co-rumination as a dyadic and dynamic system.

Co-rumination-defined as when individuals perseverate on problems with each other, focus excessively on negative feelings, and cyclically discuss the causes and consequences of problems-is often examined from the perspective of the person seeking support or by assigning one rating of co-rumination to a dyad. This approach muddles how each person contributes to the "co" of co-rumination and may have implications for understanding prior work that has shown associations between co-rumination and intrapersonal and interpersonal well-being. We leveraged state space grids to examine co-rumination as

Shifting away from negative inferences affects rumination and mood.

In three studies, we examined the effect of shifting from a negative to a positive inference for a negative personal event, on mood, state rumination, and next-day inferences, and assessed whether trait brooding moderates these effects. Participants described a personal event and made two inferences for it. Studies 1 and 2 showed that instructing participants to shift from a negative to a positive inference, improved mood and decreased state rumination, compared to a no-shift condition. Lasting effects of this shift were observed on the next day, but not among high brooders. In Study 3, trait

[Therapy based on positive self-defining memories for older women with depressive disorder and associated ruminations: A pilot study].

Depressive disorders overthrow the recovery of positive memories, this mechanism being strategically used by healthy subjects to cope with negative feelings. An adjustment to this strategy to deal with depression affecting elderly women showing ruminative responses could be obtained through the materialization of a number of positive self-defining memories. This innovative cognitive therapeutic method should allow a decrease in the rumination rate and an improvement of depressive disorders for aging women. Our study, including 14 depressed women over 65 years old showing ruminative responses,

Psychological processes in chronic embitterment: The potential contribution of rumination.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic embitterment has received considerable attention in terms of its presentation and epidemiology, but there has been relatively little focus on its psychology. The present study aimed to test the hypothesis that embitterment is positively correlated with rumination, and that this effect is influenced by positive beliefs about rumination. METHOD: A convenience sample (N = 79) of staff of a health care facility attending its occupational health service completed questionnaires assessing chronic embitterment, work-related rumination (distinguishing affective rumination and probl

The relative effects of abstract versus concrete rumination on the experience of post-decisional regret.

rumination is characteristic of depressed individuals, as is the tendency to experience post-decisional regret. We conducted two studies to test whether (i) abstract rumination is associated with post-decisional regret, and (ii) inducing the converse style of thinking, namely concrete rumination, would reduce post-decisional regret. In Study 1, participants identified a personally important decision that they regretted having made in the past 6 months, were instructed to think in either an abstract (n = 29) or concrete (n = 29) way about their decision, then rated the extent to which they regr

Intelligence and Interleukin-6 in Older Adults: The Role of Repetitive Thought.

OBJECTIVE: Higher intelligence quotient (IQ) correlates with lower systemic inflammation, consistent with an association between lower IQ and disease risk. The present study examined the role of repetitive thought (RT) in the relationship between IQ and interleukin (IL)-6. RT is thinking attentively, repeatedly, and frequently about oneself and one's world and is characterized by valence (positive-negative), purpose (searching-solving), and total quantity (much-little). METHODS: Estimated IQ and RT dimension scores were assessed at baseline in a sample of older adults (N = 120, mean age = 74

Autobiographical memory functions of nostalgia in comparison to rumination and counterfactual thinking: similarity and uniqueness.

We compared and contrasted nostalgia with rumination and counterfactual thinking in terms of their autobiographical memory functions. Specifically, we assessed individual differences in nostalgia, rumination, and counterfactual thinking, which we then linked to self-reported functions or uses of autobiographical memory (Self-Regard, Boredom Reduction, Death Preparation, Intimacy Maintenance, Conversation, Teach/Inform, and Bitterness Revival). We tested which memory functions are shared and which are uniquely linked to nostalgia. The commonality among nostalgia, rumination, and counterfactual

Social anxiety and post-event processing among African-American individuals.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is among the most prevalent psychiatric conditions, yet little attention has been paid to whether putative cognitive vulnerability factors related to social anxiety in predominantly White samples are related to social anxiety among historically underrepresented groups. DESIGN: We tested whether one such vulnerability factor, post-event processing (PEP; detailed review of social event that can increase state social anxiety) was related to social anxiety among African-American (AA; n = 127) persons, who comprise one of the largest underrepresented racial groups in the

Time-course evolution of counterfactual thinking after early pregnancy loss.

Counterfactual thinking (CT), the tendency to consider how events might have been different, is a common cognitive process following negative life events. This longitudinal study examines the prevalence and time-course evolution of CT immediately after early pregnancy loss. A sample of 119 women who experienced early pregnancy loss completed an online psychological assessment measuring traumatic impact, trait rumination, and CT presence, frequency, and content. The survey was administered at one week, one month, and four months post-loss. CT was highly prevalent (72%) and decreased over time.

Semantic inhibition impairment in college students with depressive states as evidenced by EEG and pupillometry during the hayling task.

In this study we tested whether depression is associated with impaired semantic inhibition, resulting in symptoms of rumination and anhedonia. For this purpose and using the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) college students with depressive states (DEP) and matched controls (CTL) performed a Hayling's task, while EEG and pupillometry measures were recorded. Participants were asked to complete sentential contexts with either a highly associated word (initiation) or a non-related word (inhibition), in response to randomly presented trial-by-trial cues. The DEP group, compared to the CTL grou

Influence of suppression and reappraisal on eating-related symptoms and ruminative thinking in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

The goal of the present study was to investigate the influence of expressive suppression and cognitive reappraisal on eating-related symptomatology in anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). Secondly, on the background of theoretical models proposing a reciprocal relationship between suppression and rumination, we sought to understand whether inhibition of emotional expression also affects ruminative thinking in eating disorders. Women with AN (n = 39), BN (n = 37) and a control group (CG, n = 41) were randomly assigned to either engage in suppression or reappraisal during a sadness-el

Difficulties with emotion regulation as a transdiagnostic mechanism linking child maltreatment with the emergence of psychopathology.

Childhood maltreatment is associated with increased risk for most forms of psychopathology. We examine emotion dysregulation as a transdiagnostic mechanism linking maltreatment with general psychopathology. A sample of 262 children and adolescents participated; 162 (61.8%) experienced abuse or exposure to domestic violence. We assessed four emotion regulation processes (cognitive reappraisal, attention bias to threat, expressive suppression, and rumination) and emotional reactivity. Psychopathology symptoms were assessed concurrently and at a 2-year longitudinal follow-up. A general psychopath
