Cutaneous scalp metastases from retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma: a case report.

A 71-year-old woman presented with five scalp nodules that were clinically suspicious for pilar cysts. Histopathologic examination showed a proliferation of mitotically active pleomorphic spindle cells arranged into intersecting fascicles in the dermis and subcutis. Tumor cells displayed deeply eosinophilic cytoplasm and expressed desmin but were negative for S100 protein by immunohistochemistry. Before 10 years, the patient was diagnosed with high-grade retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma and underwent resection with intraoperative radiation. Metastatic disease involving the lungs, liver and soft …

Aberrant C nerve fibre function of the healthy scalp.

BACKGROUND: The scalp is commonly associated with itch and burning sensations. Previous studies have shown the scalp is highly innervated compared with other body areas. However, limited data are available on sensory testing associated with C nerve fibres of the healthy scalp. OBJECTIVE: To examine the function of C nerve fibre-mediated sensations such as warmth, heat pain, itch and neurogenic inflammation in two areas of the scalp (crown and occiput) in comparison to forearm skin. METHODS: Twenty-two healthy subjects (11 women, 11 men) underwent quantitative computerized thermosensory testi…

Scalp abscess due to Salmonella typhimurium-- a case report.

The incidence of non-typhoidal salmonellosis has markedly increased in the past decade. Localised infection develops in approximately 5-10% of persons with salmonella bacteraemia. In this report, a 4-year-old female child suffering from acute lymphoid leukaemia is presented with high grade intermittent fever. Pustular lesions were observed over the right side of the scalp. The scalp abscess was drained and pus was sent for culture and sensitivity. Culture grew Salmonella typhimurium. Blood culture also grew the same organism. She had an uneventful recovery after treatment.

Burying shunts in bone cavities to protect delicate scalp.

The authors describe a simple technique for protecting at-risk scalp overlying CSF shunt hardware. Patients with brain tumors commonly undergo radiation therapy and CSF diversion. Chronic radiation-induced changes in the skin can predispose patients to skin breakdown over the prominent shunt reservoir, which may lead to subsequent contamination of the shunt hardware. The technique described reduces the risk of hardware contamination while obviating the need for revision of the entire shunt system. By reducing the profile of the CSF shunt reservoir, this technique also reduces the risk of futur…

Split-skin grafting from the scalp: the hidden advantage.

BACKGROUND: Split-skin grafting is a routine reconstructive technique associated with large variation in practice. Grafts from the thigh, buttock, or abdomen take a long time to heal and may leave unpleasant, hypopigmented scars. Retrospective reports favor the scalp as a donor site in burn patients. OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of duration of healing, cosmetic outcome, and safety of split-skin grafting from the scalp in patients receiving dermatologic surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred sixty-six consecutive patients (85 men, 81 women) were treated for coverage of chronic leg ulcers or othe…

Sensitive scalp: does this condition exist? An epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: The concept of the 'sensitive scalp' is vague. However, the 'sensitive skin syndrome' is probably not limited to the face. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and analyse sensitive scalp conditions. PATIENTS AND METHOD: 1011 individuals, representative of the French population, were investigated. RESULTS: 44.2 % declared suffering from a 'sensitive scalp' (47.4% of women versus 40.8% of men). Of these subjects, 11.5% reported having an associated scalp disease versus 1.1% of non-sensitive subjects. Hair loss was significantly associated with scalp sensitivity. The scalp was dry for 24%, nor…

Occipital scalp hemangioma: prenatal sonographic and magnetic resonance images.

Fetal scalp hemangioma in the occipital region is extremely rare and its accurate diagnosis is essential for perinatal management. We present a case of occipital scalp hemangioma diagnosed by prenatal sonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). An echogenic mass measuring 29 mm x 23 mm x 30 mm was found in the occipital region by sonography at 20 weeks of gestation. Color-flow Doppler sonography depicted vascularity only at the periphery of the mass. The MRI results indicated that the extracranial mass exhibited a heterogeneous appearance of predominantly hyperintensity on T1- and hypoint…

[A rare low-grade malignant scalp tumor. Atypical fibroxanthoma].

A 79-year-old patient presented with an asymptomatic scalp tumor which had grown over the past 9 months. Based on clinical, histological and immunohistochemical staining, we made the diagnosis of an atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX). AFX is a rare tumor, but important in the differential diagnosis of other scalp tumors. The routine histological staining allows one to identify a malignant fibrous histiocytoma, while a spindle-cell malignant melanoma can be excluded with immunohistochemical staining. An anaplastic squamous cell carcinoma cannot always be separated with completed certainty from atypic…

Unilateral linear psoriasis with palmoplantar, nail, and scalp involvement.

This study compared the effects of complex training (CT) versus resistance training (RT) on agility, strength and power in elite modern pentathletes during precompetition periods. Ten male modern pentathletes from the Chinese national team participated. They first completed the RT mesocycles (eight weeks), followed by the CT mesocycles (eight weeks), with detraining microcycle (two weeks) in between for rest. Agility (three-cone test, TCT), strength (one-repetition maximum back squat, 1RM-BS; isometric mid-thigh pull peak force, IMTP), and power (counter-movement jump, CMJ; reaction strength i

Reconstruction of complex scalp defects: the "Banana Peel" revisited.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the use of multiple, large, local flaps in the reconstruction of large scalp defects. METHODS: A retrospective review of 4 cases in which the "banana peel" method of scalp reconstruction, originally described by Orticochea, was used as a method for closure of moderately large to extensive scalp defects. RESULTS: In all 4 cases, closure of the scalp defects was accomplished. Major morbidity included hair-bearing skin in the forehead in 1 patient, an inconsequential small flap dehiscence requiring closure in the same patient, and a partial loss of a small skin graft t…

Scalp metastasis from squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix.

We describe a 45-year-old woman with squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix stage IIB, who was initially treated with radical radiotherapy. The patient developed multiple scalp metastases 8 months following her treatment. The scalp was involved in the disease as the sole anatomic site of distant cutaneous metastasis. The scalp lesions were treated with palliative radiotherapy. A search of the literature revealed only two cases of such distant metastatic involvement of the scalp from cervical cancer.
