Main advances in the application of scorpionate-based catalytic systems for the preparation of sustainable polymers.

Scorpionate ligands have emerged as pivotal components in the field of coordination chemistry and catalysis since the seminal work by Trofimenko in the late 1960s. These species have demonstrated an extraordinarily rich tridentate coordination chemistry, enhancing the stability of metal complexes. In addition, they offer the possibility of modifying the chemical and electronical features as κ3-ligands, providing a wide variety of potential substrates with multiple donor atoms. Furthermore, this type of ligand has shown wide versatility in its coordination mode and can adopt different binding a

Variation in venom yield, protein concentration and regeneration toxicity in the scorpion Buthus lienhardi.

Scorpion venom research aims to develop treatments for dangerous species and identify candidates for new drugs. The extraction of high-quality venom, which is essential, requires mastery of the extraction and maintenance of scorpions. It is in this perspective that we have undertaken this present work which aims to contribute to scientifically mastering venom yields and the factors that influence them in scorpions. Two experiments were conducted. In the first, the volume yield and protein concentration of venom from 121 Buthus lienhardi scorpions were examined according to their size, sex, mas…

Influence of envenomation timing on peripheral immune and oxidative responses in experimental scorpion envenomation.

BACKGROUND: Scorpion envenomation poses a significant health threat in endemic regions, eliciting complex immune responses in affected individuals. Recent research suggests that the timing of envenomation - whether it occurs during the day or night - may influence the host inflammatory response and subsequent organ damage. This study investigates the impact of envenomation timing on host inflammatory and oxidative responses using an experimental scorpion envenomation model. METHODS: Mice were divided into two groups, corresponding to their resting phase (day) and activity phase (night), and w

FEATURES OF THE EFFECT OF SCORPION VENOM ON THE IMMUNE DEFENSE SYSTEM OF THE MAMMALIAN LIVER (REVIEW).

INTRODUCTION: Toxic liver damage due to exposure to poisons, including those of animal origin, is often associated with lymphocytic infiltration, and the nature and degree of inflammation determine the rate of progression and severity of damage. The mechanisms by which toxic compounds activate immune-mediated pathways of liver damage are still being actively studied, however, liver infiltration by effector lymphocytes is a common phenomenon, leading to the destruction of hepatocytes and cholangiocytes and a persistent shift in the structural and functional characteristics of the organ Aim of s

Proteasome-driven modulation of immune and oxidative pathways during scorpion envenomation pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Scorpion venom contains a variety of toxin molecules that are the drivers of inflammation and oxidative stress, leading to significant tissue damage. While several mechanisms underlying these responses have been studied, the involvement of the proteasome complex - a key regulator of inflammation - remains poorly understood. This study explored the role of the proteasome in modulating inflammatory and oxidative responses to envenomation by Androctonus australis hector venom. METHODS: Mice were pretreated intraperitoneally with bortezomib, a proteasome inhibitor, at low (0.05 mg/kg)

Proteomic analysis of two novel peptides from the Odontobuthus doriae scorpion venom.

The venom of the Odontobuthus doriae scorpion, prevalent in East Asia and Iran, has not been fully characterized. This study provides the first proteomic profile of O. doriae venom to explore its potential as a medical. 2D-PAGE analysis revealed 96 protein spots with isoelectric points from 3 to 9 and molecular weights between 6.6 to 205 kDa. Fourteen toxin fractions were isolated via HPLC, and SDS-PAGE showed seven protein bands ranging from 3.8 to 182 kDa. MALDI-TOF MS identified Peptide 1 and Peptide 2, resembling Hemoglobin beta-2 chain and Chaperonin HSP60 and suggest potential therapeuti

The Significant Therapeutic Effects of Chinese Scorpion: Modern Scientific Exploration of Ion Channels.

Chinese scorpion (CS), a traditional animal-based medicine used for over a millennium, has been documented since AD 935-960. It is derived from the scorpion Buthus martensii Karsch and is used to treat various ailments such as stroke, epilepsy, rheumatism, and more. Modern research has identified the pharmacological mechanisms behind its traditional uses, with active components like venom and proteins showing analgesic, antitumor, antiepileptic, and antithrombotic effects. Studies reveal that CS affects ion channels, crucial for cellular functions, through interactions with sodium, potassium,

Osteosynthesis using Scorpion plate for neer type V distal clavicle fracture.

BACKGROUND: Neer type V distal clavicle fractures are considered the most unstable fracture type and are characterized by the disruption of continuity between the coracoclavicular (C-C) ligaments and proximal or distal bone fragments. However, owing to the rarity of such fractures, there is currently no universally accepted surgical procedure for their treatment. Recently, the scorpion plate, an anatomical, non-locking, pre-contoured plate with two grasping arms to fix the distal or inferior clavicular fragments, was introduced. This study aimed to investigate the postoperative functional and

Homoleptic Fe(III) and Fe(IV) Complexes of a Dianionic C3-Symmetric Scorpionate.

High-valent iron species have been implicated as key intermediates in catalytic oxidation reactions, both in biological and synthetic systems. Many heteroleptic Fe(IV) complexes have now been prepared and characterized, especially using strongly π-donating oxo, imido, or nitrido ligands. On the other hand, homoleptic examples are scarce. Herein, we investigate the redox chemistry of iron complexes of the dianonic tris-skatylmethylphosphonium (TSMP2-) scorpionate ligand. One-electron oxidation of the tetrahedral, bis-ligated [(TSMP)2FeII]2- leads to the octahedral [(TSMP)2FeIII]-. The latter un

A first molecular characterization of the scorpion telson microbiota of Hadrurus arizonensis and Smeringurus mesaensis.

Scorpions represent an ancient lineage of arachnids that have radiated across the globe and are incredibly resilient-since some thrive in harsh environments and can exist on minimal and intermittent feedings. Given the emerging importance of microbiomes to an organism's health, it is intriguing to suggest that the long-term success of the scorpion bauplan may be linked to the microbiome. Little is known about scorpion microbiomes, and what is known, concentrates on the gut. The microbiome is not limited to the gut, rather it can be found within tissues, fluids and on external surfaces. We test…

A scorpion toxin affecting sodium channels shows double cis-trans isomerism.

Scorpion α-toxins (α-NaTx) inhibiting the inactivation of voltage-gated sodium channels (Nav ) are a well-studied family of small proteins. We previously showed that the structure of α-NaTx specificity module responsible for selective Nav binding is governed by an interplay between the nest and niche protein motifs. Here, we report the solution structure of the toxin Lqq4 from the venom of the scorpion Leiurus quinquestriatus. Unexpectedly, we find that this toxin presents an ensemble of long-lived structurally distinct states. We unequivocally assign these states to the alternative configurat
