An experimental investigation of verbal expression of emotion in anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to use an experimental design to investigate verbal expression of emotion in anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). METHOD: Forty-two patients with AN, 26 patients with BN and 34 healthy controls (HCs) were videoed talking about discrete emotional experiences. Talks were analysed using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count. Participants also completed the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ). RESULTS: People with AN used fewer words when describing their emotional experiences and fewer positive affect words than HCs. People with BN were indistinguishable

Young women with breast burns: a self-help "group by mail".

The patient with facial and hand scars that show clearly is forced to deal with his or her disfigurement, to grieve the loss, and to adapt to the new image. Patients who have body scars that are hidden by clothes and who fear exposure may never deal with the reality of their damaged selves and thus suffer from low self-esteem and accompanying depression and anxiety. Young adolescent women in particular are concerned about a pleasing appearance as they deal with fears about dating and sexual relationships. It is particularly difficult for them to be open and seek counsel on this subject. This a

Old women's self perceptions of dependency and some implications for service provision.

Fifty women aged 75 years or older who were living alone were visited to determine their self perception of dependency. There was a wide variety in reported capacity for self care but two patterns are isolated: those who were active initiators with a self perception of independence and passive responders with a perception of dependence. Service providers should take cognisance of the woman's self perception in the effective delivery of services.

Self-image resilience and dissonance: the role of affirmational resources.

It was predicted that high self-esteem Ss (HSEs) would rationalize an esteem-threatening decision less than low self-esteem Ss (LSEs), because HSEs presumably had more favorable self-concepts with which to affirm, and thus repair, their overall sense of self-integrity. This prediction was supported in 2 experiments within the "free-choice" dissonance paradigm--one that manipulated self-esteem through personality feedback and the other that varied it through selection of HSEs and LSEs, but only when Ss were made to focus on their self-concepts. A 3rd experiment countered an alternative explanat

Staying or Leaving: Patriarchal Roots of Cognitive Dissonance and the Impact of Childhood Adversity on Abusive Relationships.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a critical public health issue, disproportionately affecting women. This study investigates the psychological mechanisms that may help explain how cognitive mechanisms are associated with revictimization in abusive relationships, with a focus on the role of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and cognitive dissonance reduction strategies. Drawing upon Cognitive Dissonance Theory and the Foot-in-the-Door effect, this cross-sectional study examines how ACEs predict revictimization in adulthood and whether this relationship is moderated by specific cogniti

Self-management programmes in temporomandibular disorders: results from an international Delphi process.

Self-management (SM) programmes are commonly used for initial treatment of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The programmes described in the literature, however, vary widely with no consistency in terminology used, components of care or their definitions. The aims of this study were therefore to construct an operationalised definition of self-management appropriate for the treatment of patients with TMD, identify the components of that self-management currently being used and create sufficiently clear and non-overlapping standardised definitions for each of those components. A f

Psychometric Properties of the Self-Perception Profile for Children in Children with Chronic Illness.

OBJECTIVE: The Self-Perception Profile for Children (SPPC) is a commonly used measure of self-concept in children, but little research has examined its psychometric properties in children newly-diagnosed with chronic illness. METHOD: Confirmatory factor analysis and examination of reliability and convergent and discriminant validity of the SPPC was conducted in 31 children newly-diagnosed with asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, food allergy, or juvenile arthritis. RESULTS: The unidimensionality of each domain of the SPPC was confirmed, internal reliability was robust (α=.83-.95), and inter-domain p

Self esteem, dependency, self-efficacy and self-criticism in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by fear and avoidance in social situations where one perceives being in danger of scrutiny by others. Low self-esteem, low self-efficacy, high self-criticism and high dependency are additional potential features of SAD, and thus their examination is warranted, as is the elucidation of their inter-relationship. METHOD: Thirty-two SAD subjects diagnosed with the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview and 30 healthy controls, were administered the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS), the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale, the Depressi

International normalized ratio patient self-management for mechanical valves: is it safe enough?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: People with mechanical heart valve replacement depend on lifelong anticoagulation. Since a few years, patients can control this themselves with the assistance of a portable anticoagulation monitor. If the patient performs the complete self-testing and self-adjustment by himself, the method is called self-management. Recently completed studies concerning international normalized ratio (INR) self-management in mechanical heart valve patients are reviewed in this article. RECENT FINDINGS: Large randomized prospective studies have demonstrated that the INR self-management conce

Psychiatric symptoms and their predictors in aging parents of adults with autism spectrum disorder.

Parenting an individual with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects the mental health of both mothers and fathers. A chronic disorder, ASD, has devastating effects on parental mental health as the affected individual moves from childhood to adulthood. While the effects of ASD on parental mental health during childhood have been studied extensively, there is limited information regarding the mental health of aging parents of the expanding adult ASD population. In this context, we aimed to determine the psychiatric symptoms (PS) levels of parents of adult with ASD, to compare the PS level betwee

Self-hypnosis in chronic pain. A multiple baseline study of five highly hypnotisable subjects.

The efficacy of self-hypnosis in the treatment of chronic pain was evaluated using a multiple baseline design for five patients referred to the Auckland Hospital Pain Clinic. Subjects were selected for high hypnotisability using the Stanford Hypnotic Clinical Scale. Daily records of pain intensity, sleep quality, medication requirements, and self-hypnosis practice were completed. At four research interviews the Health Locus of Control survey, the McGill Pain Questionnaire, and the Illness Self Concept Repertory Grid (ISCRG) were administered. Subjects also reported on daily activities and qual…

Psychosexual counseling of the mastectomy patient.

A pilot research study is described, aimed at investigating the hypotheses that psychosexual factors are of central importance in the psychological recovery of the mastectomy patient and that counseling would prove beneficial. Forty-one women were interviewed. Results indicated (1) that sexual self-concept superseded mortality as the primary concern of most recovery mastectomy patients, (2) that the attitude of the partner--husband or lover--was crucial to that self-concept, (3) that most partners were eager to help, and (4) that psychosexual counseling was welcomed and found to be appropriate

Mechanisms of Change for Children Participating in Therapeutic Horse Riding: A Grounded Theory.

AIM: To develop a model for understanding mechanisms of change in health outcomes for riders with disabilities participating in therapeutic horse riding (THR). METHODS: Using grounded theory methods we collected and analyzed data from interviews with 16 child riders and 18 caregivers, teachers and primary therapists, and from participant-observation during THR sessions. RESULTS: The central concept underpinning the model illustrating mechanisms of change was "gaining the tools to go on." Riders' experiences suggested the THR landscape (i.e., "where the tools are gathered") allowed for an exp

Exploring violence exposure, stress, protective factors and behavioral problems among inner-city youth.

This study examined relationships between violence exposure, other stressors, family support, and self-concept on self-reported behavioral problems among 320 urban adolescents (aged 11-18) referred for mental health treatment. Overall, participants reported high levels of violence exposure, with a median of six past encounters with violence as a witness, victim, or through the experiences of associates. All forms of violence exposure (witnessing, being a victim, knowing of victims) were correlated with internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems for males and females. Total violence ex

On the need to better specify the concept of "control" in brain-computer-interfaces/neurofeedback research.

Aiming at a better specification of the concept of "control" in brain-computer-interfaces (BCIs) and neurofeedback (NF) research, we propose to distinguish "self-control of brain activity" from the broader concept of "BCI control", since the first describes a neurocognitive phenomenon and is only one of the many components of "BCI control". Based on this distinction, we developed a framework based on dual-processes theory that describes the cognitive determinants of self-control of brain activity as the interplay of automatic vs. controlled information processing. Further, we distinguish betwe

Academic resilience and motivational beliefs in science among native and immigrant students in Türkiye: evidence from TIMSS 2019.

Academic resilience is a critical factor in understanding the disparities in student achievement, particularly among disadvantaged groups. This study examined the level of academic resilience in science among native and immigrant students in Türkiye, using data from TIMSS 2019. In addition, the study investigated the relation of motivational beliefs (self-concept and task value) to science achievement of non-resilient students, based on Expectancy-Value Theory. Findings revealed that academic resilience is significantly lower among immigrant students compared to their native counterparts. Only

Depression, anxiety, and academic performance in COVID-19: a cross-sectional study.

Depression and anxiety are common after months of social isolation, and they can have a negative impact on anyone's quality of life if they are not treated promptly and appropriately. The aim of this study was to determine if the change to online modality courses and the presence of depression or anxiety symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with a difference in the college student's academic achievement. This study was a cross-sectional survey in which we used the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7). Also, we examined the students'

Adaptation problems with nursing home application for elderly persons: an application of the Roy adaptation nursing model.

This study sought to identify adaptation problems on the part of elderly persons and significant others that were associated with nursing home applications for elderly persons. Within the framework of the Roy Adaptation Nursing Model, an ex post facto research design was utilized to identify these adaptation problems. The four adaptive modes in this model are: physiological, self-concept, role function, and interdependence. The study group (n = 22) and a control group of elderly persons living in Calgary, as well as their significant others, were administered a structured questionnaire. Five h

Violence as Mediating Variable in Mental Health Disparities Associated to Sexual Orientation Among Mexican Youths.

In this study, we explored the role of sex as an effect-modifying variable in the association between sexual orientation and mental health in Mexican youth. In addition, we tested if violent experiences in the family and the school and attitudes toward homosexuality could act as mediating variables in such association. Data from three representative surveys performed in 2007, 2009, and 2013 among Mexican high school students were analyzed. Two dimensions of sexual orientation were evaluated: romantic partnership and sexual behavior. The outcomes were negative and positive mood, suicidal ideati
