BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) status is a clinically important prognostic biomarker in breast cancer and is used to guide therapy, especially for hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative cases. However, invasive lymph node staging is increasingly omitted before therapy, and studies such as the randomised Intergroup Sentinel Mamma (INSEMA) trial address the potential for further de-escalation of axillary surgery. Therefore, it would be helpful to accurately predict the pretherapeutic sentinel status using medical images.
METHODS: Using a ResNet 50 architecture pretrained on ImageNet an…

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cutaneous melanoma often metastasises in primis to sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs). Currently, there is no standardized method of characterizing the micrometastatic tumour burden in SLN biopsies for melanoma. Different criteria have been developed to evaluate SLN biopsies, yet none consider the number of cells identified. Here, we used software analysis to digitally quantify metastatic tumour burden within SLNs and correlated these data with clinicopathological and prognostic information.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We identified 246 cases of SLN biopsies, including 63 positive (26%…

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node biopsy is one of the minimally invasive techniques that can confirm the presence of metastasis of regional lymph nodes in cancer. Sentinel lymph node biopsy can be done with a lymph mapping technique using blue-dye, radiotracer, or a combination of both. In developing countries, sentinel lymph node biopsy is often done with a single agent, which is the blue dye. The limitation of conducting SLNB in Indonesia is the availability of patent blue dye and radioisotope tracer. To overcome that, a hormonal receptor is expected to aid in predicting sentinel lymph node m…

In 2020 more than 2.2 million cases of breast cancer were registered, and these figures indicate that this disease is very widespread. Lymphatic metastasis is one of the most important causes of local recurrence of breast cancer and is unfavorable factor of prognosis. The purpose of the work is to improve the method of intraoperative diagnosis of the sentinel lymph node in patients with breast cancer. Between 2016 and 2021, 200 patients with T1-T3N0M0 breast cancer were operated at the Odesa Regional Clinical Hospital. Two types of dyes - Patent Blue and ICG were used. The patients who had mas…

A cross-sectional study was conducted on the seroprevalence of horse brucellosis using the Rose Bengal Plate Test (RBPT) and Serum Agglutination Test (SAT) on the Mambilla plateau of Taraba state, Nigeria where horses are reared under a free range management system on cattle farms. The objectives of the study were to determine the prevalence of brucella antibodies in horses as well as the distribution of the infection according to sex and age. A total of 100 horses were sampled, 25 each from four locations where horses were concentrated on the plateau: Gembu, Nguroje, Dorofi, and Mayo Ndaga. S

BACKGROUND: Current treatment guidelines for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) treated with mastectomy recommend sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB). In the modern era, there is a trend toward minimizing invasive staging and treatment of the axilla. In this study, we seek to determine the role of SLNB in patients undergoing mastectomy for the treatment of DCIS.
METHODS: Patients undergoing mastectomy were identified from our institution's SLNB database from 2012 to 2016. Patients were included if core needle biopsy demonstrated DCIS. Patient demographics, tumor characteristics, and pathologic var…

BACKGROUND: The oncologic safety of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) alone for clinically node-positive (cN1-2) patients who convert to pathologic node-negativity (ypN0) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is not well established.
METHODS: This study retrospectively identified 244 consecutive patients with a diagnosis of cT1-3cN0-2 breast cancer who underwent NAC followed by SLNB at the authors' institution between 2013 and 2018. The patients were categorized as clinically node-negative (cN0) or cN1-2 before the onset of NAC, and the Kaplan-Meier method was used to compare locoregional and …

We present 2 cases of penile cancer in which the inguinal lymph node was not palpable and inguinal lymph node dissection (ILND) could be safely avoided by conducting dynamic sentinel lymph node biopsy (DSNB). The first case was in a 54-year-old man complaining of penile tumor for at least 3 months. We performed partial penectomy and DSNB. The pathological diagnosis was squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), pT2-3. There was no cancer metastasis in sentinel nodes (0/2). There has been no recurrence for 6 years after operation. The second case was 65-year-old man suffering from penile tumor for at least…

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is widely performed for melanoma with certain histologic parameters and offers important prognostic and staging information. Breslow thickness (BT) by itself also provides meaningful prognostic information.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether SLN status provides prognostic information independent from that which is already provided by BT.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 896 patients who underwent SLN biopsy for primary cutaneous melanoma. Stratified analysis of the impact of SLN status within BT groups (0.01-1 mm, 1.01-2.00 mm, 2.…

Cutaneous melanoma is the solid neoplasia with the highest growing incidence among all tumors. It spreads predictably to the lymphatic vessels and sentinel lymph node, and when the latter is affected the prognosis worsens dramatically. Sentinel lymph node biopsy is considered when thickness of the primary tumor exceeds 1mm and/or when there are adverse features in thinner melanomas. When there is nodal metastasis, current evidence in the literature recommends complete lymphadenectomy, although this procedure has its intrinsic risks (i.e., lymphedema and cellulitis), and there are no published …

INTRODUCTION: Intraoperative frozen section lymph node assessment helps to predict axillary lymph node metastasis in breast cancer. However, the accuracy of this frozen section analysis may vary among institutions. This study describes our institution's experience in intraoperative analysis of sentinel lymph node and aims to determine the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of our assessment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analysed the histopathological material and data from 82 breast cancer patients diagnosed over a period of four years who underwent intraoperative frozen secti…

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) metastasis is a powerful predictor of survival in primary cutaneous melanoma. Lymphatic invasion (LI) may correlate with increased risk of SLN metastasis. Intralymphatic metastases, often difficult to detect on hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained sections, are readily identified with dual immunohistochemistry for melanocytic and lymphatic markers.
METHODS: We used dual S100/D240 immunohistochemistry to detect LI in 125 melanomas from patients who underwent SLN biopsy and correlated LI with melanoma staging parameters and disease status.
RESULTS: Dual imm…
