Information on pineal gland function in man is briefly reviewed. The evidence presented suggests that in man the pineal gland: (i) is involved in control of certain types of behaviour, such as sleep and sleepiness; (ii) is associated with direction orientation; (iii) is in some way related to the phenomenon known as jet lag; (iv) affects sexual maturation; and (v) may affect sperm motility. On the basis of available evidence it is concluded that in man the pineal gland must be regarded as an endocrine gland participating in the close synchronization of a variety of functions.

In the sexuological literature there was a strong argument about the seeming inequality of clitorial or vaginal orgasms for a long time. S. Freud characterized the clitoral orgasm as immature, infantile and noted that it should be transformed into the advanced, truly vaginal orgasm. Changes in plasma T4 levels were investigated in prepubertal and adult female goats during the course of an experimental Trypanosoma congolense infection. A significant decline in the T4 levels was observed within 1 week of trypanosome challenge. The levels remained low up to the end of the 7th weeks when prepubertal goats received a trypanocidal treatment, whereafter the values started to rise to normal pre-infection values. Postnatal growth in body weight, from birth to 7 years, was studied longitudinally in a sample of savannah baboons. Measurements of weight were collected on 45 male and 42 female baboons at 12-week intervals. The weights of males and females were treated independently and compared for gender differences. Distance and mean increment curves were used to describe the pattern and changes in the rate of growth. The age at menarche was recorded in a series of girls with congenital dislocation of the hip and compared with a control sample drawn from the population at risk. The menarcheal age of the CDH patients was decreased by, on average, six months, the decrease being caused by the presence among the CDH girls of a few individuals with a very early menarche.
