The Irkutsk region is the unique territory where all known subtypes of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) circulate. The pilot controlled study proved the effectiveness of enriched fermented milk product "Prolacta" as means of the primary prevention of nutrition-associated anemia, firstly, at the stage of latent iron deficiency. The study included 166 adult residents of the city of Omsk. Among examined patiens there were 48 (30%) men and 118 (70%) women aged from 18 to 59 years (mean age: 29.2 ± 0.84 years). There has been a drastic increase in the incidence of ostitis in children since 2001. Comparison of current tuberculous ostitis (n = 70) and primary pulmonary tuberculosis (n = 60) in infants revealed significant clinical and epidemiological differences. Molecular genetic methods identified BCG M. bovis strain DNA in 13 (46.4%) intraoperative samples and 4 samples of obtained cultures from bone destruction foci. Isolation of BCG cultures and/or verification of BCG M. ovis DNA from the bone lesion focus by polymerase chain reaction is a significant criterion for verification of the BCG etiology

Gradual dispersion of an abundant flea species Ctenophyllus hirticrus specific to the Pallas's pika (the main plague carrier), is revealed in the Gorno-Altai natural plague focus on the territory, occupied by two populations of this lagomorph. Spreading of Yersinia pestis in these areas took place a short time later the rise of this ectoparasite's abundance. It is supposed that the colonization of these areas by C. hirticrus was one of the factors determined epizooties spreading within the focus and formation of new sites of stable Y. pestis preservation.

High morbidity among the children whose parents and/or grandparents who resided in the areas with relatively low pollution levels (0.2-2.0 Ci/km2) after the 1957 radiation accident at the production association "Mayak" is mainly formed under the influence of combined social, hygienic, and biomedical factors. The very residence of any child's ancestor in the low polluted areas produce no substantial impact on the nonspecific resistance of children.

In 1991-1992, higher affection rates of diphyllobothriasis and enterobiasis were notified in some groups of the organized children living on the Pur River (the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug). The children are infected by Diphyllobothrium in infancy, the risk of infection is rather high, reinfections are observed. Among other things, this makes it necessary to perform systematic educational studies among the population in their different forms.

The paper presents results of individual virological investigation of about 2 thousand of hungry imagoes of Ixodes persulcatus Sch., collected for the estimation of the absolute number of ticks at test sites. This approach is shown to be suitable for estimating the ratio between the vectors with various virus doses, the number of vectors, and of the vector share in a virus population in natural tick-born encephalitis foci.

Two thermophilic spore-forming sulfate-reducing strains, 435T and 781, were isolated from oil and gas reservoirs in Western Siberia (Russia) about 50 years ago. Both strains were found to be neutrophilic, chemoorganotrophic, anaerobic bacteria, growing at 45-70 °C (optimum, 55-60 °C) and with 0-4.5% (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0.5-1% NaCl).
