Survivors of multiple AIDS-related losses face threat to their identity because of the extreme disruption to their personal, assumptive, and interpersonal worlds. This article briefly explains the experience of multiple-loss survivors and includes a case history of a survivor. An individual's sense of self is transformed through identification with the disease. In the gay community, a particularly strong identification with AIDS arose. One outcome of the meshing of an AIDS and homosexual identity is the tendency for gays to assume an identity in relation to HIV ("I am HIV positive/negative.")

Investigated late psychosocial sequelae in 133 parents of children who survived cancer, using questionnaires developed to measure the specific impact of the disease. 230 patients with myasthenia gravis were investigated by a german questionnaire, the HAMBURGER-ZWANGS-INVENTAR, in order to quantify their obsessive and compulsive behaviour. Compared to normals, myasthenic patients show higher scores on the compulsion-subscales of the inventory. The most significant differences appeared on the orderliness-subscale. On the other hand ratings of obsessive behaviour are significantly lower than in the normal population. Especially (auto)aggressive ruminations do hardly occur in myasthenia, which is a remarkable fact in this autoaggressive immunological disease.

Depression is common in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) populations and has been hypothesized to result from patients' belief that they cannot control their disease or its impact. In a sample of 106 patients with RA, we found that scores on a measure of helplessness mediated the relationship between severe, disabling RA and depression. Although depression secondary to medical illness occurs frequently, little is known about its response to conventional antidepressant therapy. In this retrospective study of 50 patients, the authors assessed the charted therapeutic effect of antidepressants and sought to define pretreatment features associated with good outcome. Psychosocial morbidity was examined in 90 consecutive patients with Stage I or II breast cancer aged under 70 treated by mastectomy.
