Laugier-Hunziker pigmentation (LHP) is an acquired disorder of hypermelanosis characterized by mucocutaneous hyperpigmentation. LHP may resemble various disorders characterized by mucocutaneous pigmentation. A 58-year-old lady presented with progressively increasing number of variable sized, hyperpigmented macules over the lips, fingers, toes and nails. There was no family history of similar illness. Systemic examination and all relevant investigations were within normal limits. Histopathology of a skin lesion had features consistent with LHP. The diagnosis of LHP must be made only after relev

Skin aging is a complex biological process affected by a plethora of intrinsic and extrinsic factors that alter cutaneous functions through the modulations of signaling pathways and responses. Expressed in various cell types and skin tissue layers, G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) play a vital role in regulating skin aging. We have cataloged 156 GPCRs expressed in the skin and reviewed their roles in skin aging, such as pigmentation, loss of elasticity, wrinkles, rough texture, and aging-associated skin disorders. By exploring the GPCRs found in the skin, it may be possible to develop new t

Vitiligo is a skin condition that causes loss of pigmentation, resulting in hypopigmented and depigmented patches on the skin. Vitiligo has been associated with many autoimmune conditions. A 27-year-old female with a history of vitiligo had a clinical presentation and laboratory studies that were consistent with incipient hypothyroidism. The relationship between vitiligo, hypothyroidism, and other autoimmune conditions is discussed.

Deep peeling with phenol solutions has been criticized because of the hypopigmentation that usually results. The lower eyelid skin after routine blepharoplasty will retain its hyper-pigmentation and fine wrinkles. Phenol peeling of the lower eyelid will produce a complementary lightening of the skin and improvement in the wrinkling. This report explains the technique used by the author to improve blepharoplasty results.

Natural ultraviolet radiation spectral irradiance at the terrestrial zones of various latitudes and altitudes was measured. On this basis biologically effective intensities and times for induction of erythema, photo-keratoconjunctivitis, cataract, immunosuppression and skin pigmentation after acute UV-irradiation were calculated. Skin cancer, cataract and vitamin D deficit risk values dependences on intensity and dose of prolonged UV-exposure were considered.

Pregnancy affects all organ systems in the body, including the skin. Some skin changes are physiological, whereas others such as the dermatoses of pregnancy are pathological. Dermatologists regularly encounter pregnant patients, and the identification of normal skin changes and their differentiation from disease states are essential to insure the well-being of both mother and fetus. This review discusses the physiological skin changes in pregnancy, including alterations in pigmentation, hair, nail, and connective tissue, as well as vascular and hematologic changes and modulation of glandular f

BACKGROUND: Pigmentary mosaicism constitutes a heterogeneous group of skin pigmentation alterations associated with multisystem involvement. The aim of this study was to establish a complete cytogenetic and molecular characterization of PM patients, emphasizing on searching for possible low chromosomal mosaicism and on establishing an accurate genotype-phenotype correlation.
RESULTS: A total of 73 patients were included (3 months to 18 years of age), 52% male and 48% female. Observed in 69 (95%) patients, the most frequent pattern of pigmentation was fine and whorled BL, which was associated …

Both the observed lack of skin pigmentation and reduced eye size can most likely be explained by a lack of MITF function.

Chikungunya fever (CKF), a neglected tropical disease caused by the chikungunya virus, manifests with skin pigmentary changes in a significant portion of people. A myriad of pigmentary alterations in individuals with CKF have been documented in the literature. This review highlights the pathogenesis, clinical features, histopathology, diagnosis and treatment of CKF-associated pigmentation. Notable presentations include the 'Chik sign' often seen in neonates and children. Treatment involves reassurance and topical agents for persistent pigmentation. Understanding these pigmentary changes is cru

A 57-year-old schizoaffective disorder patient was placed on chlorpromazine because of its sedative properties and low profile for extrapyramidal side effects. After two years of treatment, the patient developed photosensitivity and blue-gray pigmentation of the skin of the face, neck and dorsum of hands. Significant pigment deposits were also observed in eye lens and cornea. An oval translucent lesion lateral to the left angle of the mouth was removed and the biopsy showed a basal cell carcinoma. The cutaneous and eye pigmentation were only partially reversible after the discontinuation of ch

Four cases of pigmentation of the skin and mucous membranes in homosexuals of the IVC1 group (CDC classification) are reported. The aetiological investigation, although incomplete, pointed to a medicinal origin which could not be formally confirmed. The drugs suspected were azidothymidine, pyrimethamine and ketoconazole. There was no clinical or laboratory evidence of adrenal insufficiency. The few published cases of cutaneo-mucosal pigmentation in HIV infection, often mimicking adrenal insufficiency, emphasize the need for thorough toxicological investigation; this may avoid prescribing an un

Melanocytes are specialized neural crest-derived cells present in the epidermal skin. These cells synthesize melanin pigment that protects the genome from harmful ultraviolet radiations. Perturbations in melanocyte functioning lead to pigmentary disorders such as piebaldism, albinism, vitiligo, melasma, and melanoma. Zebrafish is an excellent model system to understand melanocyte functions. The presence of conspicuous pigmented melanocytes, ease of genetic manipulation, and availability of transgenic fluorescent lines facilitate the study of pigmentation. This study employs the use of wild-typ

Peripheral cyanosis, the purple or blue coloration of hands and feet, can represent the initial signs of life-threatening medical conditions such as heart failure due to coronary occlusion. This makes its effective detection relevant for the timely screening of such conditions. In order to reduce the probability of false negatives during the assessment of peripheral cyanosis, one needs to consider that the manifestation of its characteristic chromatic attributes can be affected by a number of physiological factors, notably cutaneous pigmentation. The extent to which cutaneous pigmentation can

Amelanotic melanoma is a subtype of cutaneous melanoma without pigment. The clinical diagnosis is challenging because it may mimic benign or malignant melanocytic and non-melanocytic neoplasms and inflammatory skin diseases. In synchrony with the improvement of the diagnosis of pigmented lesions, dermatoscopy may assist the clinician in the diagnosis of non-pigmented skin neoplasms in general and of amelanotic melanoma in particular. We have searched the literature to extract the most relevant dermatoscopic clues to diagnose amelanotic and hypomelanotic melanomas by dermatoscopy. In addition w

Acral lentiginous melanoma is rare, representing approximately 1% of malignant melanomas. Overall 5 year survival is disproportionately poor (25-51%) compared to other histological subtypes. This has been attributed to diagnostic delay resulting in more advanced presentation. Subungual presentation in the fingers is uncommon, reported in 1-13% of all acral lentiginous melanomas. We report a unique and diagnostically challenging case. Contrary to previously reported examples in the literature, the actual neoplastic pathology was detected in the less pigmented finger tip skin rather than the dee

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a common depigmented skin disorder that is caused by selective destruction of melanocytes. It is generally accepted that the main function of melanin resides in the protection of skin cells against the deleterious effect of ultraviolet rays (UVRs). Association of vitiligo and skin cancer has been a subject of controversy. Occurrence of skin cancer in long-lasting vitiligo is rare despite multiple evidences of DNA damage in vitiliginous skin.
AIM: To detect the expression of P53 and Mdm2 proteins in both depigmented and normally pigmented skin of vitiligo patients and t
