PURPOSE: Positional (supine dependent) obstructive sleep apnea (POSA) affects about 55% of adults with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We aimed to study the prevalence and risk factors for POSA in children.
METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of data obtained in 171 children with moderate to severe OSA confirmed by polysomnography (PSG) performed over a 2-year period. POSA is defined by an obstructive apnea-hypopnea index (oAHI) in the supine position ≥ 2× oAHI in the non-supine position.
RESULTS: The overall prevalence of POSA was 18.7%. Children with POSA were significantly older (p < 0.001),

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To explore and analyze diversity and abundance of oropharyngeal microbiota in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. Middle-aged men, suspected to have OSA, referred to full-night polysomnography, and willing to provide oropharyngeal swab samples, were consecutively enrolled. OSA severity was assessed by apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) as non-OSA (AHI < 5 events/h) and OSA (AHI ≥ 15 events/h). Bacterial DNA of oropharyngeal samples was extracted and quality test performed. Oropharyngeal microbiota was analyzed using 16S ribosomal D

Introduction Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a widely prevalent sleep-related breathing disorder, which leads to several life-threatening diseases. OSA has systemic effects on various organ systems. Untreated OSA is associated with long-term health consequences including hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, depression, metabolic disorders, and stroke. In addition, untreated OSA is reported to be associated with cognitive dysfunction, impaired productivity at the workplace and in an increased risk of motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) resulting in injury and fatality. Other consequences of OSA i

One of the most common sleep-related disorders is obstructive sleep apnea, characterized by a reduction of airflow while breathing during sleep and cause significant health problems. This disorder is mainly diagnosed in sleep labs with polysomnography, involving high costs and stress for the patient. To address this situation multiple systems have been proposed to conduct the examination and analysis in the patient's home, using sensors to detect physiological signals that are examined by algorithms. The objective of this research is to review publications that show the performance of differen

Treatment options may be limited for infants with obstructive sleep apnea when there is no surgically correctable upper airway lesion. We therefore evaluated, retrospectively, the efficacy of low-flow oxygen as a therapeutic option for infant obstructive sleep apnea. We reviewed the medical charts of 23 infants who had undergone a therapeutic trial of low-flow oxygen during polysomnography. Split-night polysomnography was used in 21/23 subjects while 2/23 had undergone two separate, full-night polysomnography sleep architecture and respiratory findings on the baseline polysomnogram segment tha

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) is a rare, genetic disorder. Patients with PHP may have increased prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) but this has not been prospectively studied.
METHODS: We enrolled children aged 6-18 years with PHP and matched controls. Evaluation included physical examination, medical history, and polysomnography.
RESULTS: Fifteen children with PHP type 1A (PHP1A) and 15 controls completed the study. Both groups were obese (BMI 32.2 ± 8.7 vs. 31.7± 6.5). The majority of PHP1A patients required tympanostomy tubes (86.7%) and adenotonsillectomy (73.3

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs frequently in people with Down syndrome (DS) with reported prevalences ranging between 55% and 97%, compared to 1-4% in the neurotypical pediatric population. Sleep studies are often uncomfortable, costly, and poorly tolerated by individuals with DS. The objective of this study was to construct a tool to identify individuals with DS unlikely to have moderate or severe sleep OSA and in whom sleep studies might offer little benefit. An observational, prospective cohort study was performed in an outpatient clinic and overnight sleep study center with 130 DS pa

Asthma and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) are one of the most common chronic respiratory diseases. These have common risk factors that include obesity, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and impaired nasal breathing (allergic rhinitis, sinusitis). At the same time, experimental evidence demonstrates common pathophysiological mechanisms of these diseases, such as involvement in the process of the respiratory tract, a systemic inflammatory response, and implementation of neuromechanical reflexes. Thus, there is an obvious synergism between these conditions, which affects symptoms, r

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is characterized by recurrent partial or complete pharyngeal collapses during sleep. The pathophysiology of OSAS is complex and multifactorial. Factors influencing upper airway patency include a reduction in upper airway dimensions that can result from both anatomical and functional alterations (obesity, fluid shift or maxillo-facial structural changes), and increased pharyngeal collapsibility owing to reduced neuromuscular compensation and lack of the pharyngeal protective reflex during sleep. Severe OSAS is associated with a high cardiometabolic risk.

OBJECTIVE: Determine if anatomic dimensions of airway structures are associated with airway obstruction in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients.
METHODS: Twenty-eight subjects with (n = 14) and without (n = 14) OSA as determined by clinical symptoms and sleep studies; volunteer sample. Skeletal and soft tissue dimensions were measured from radiocephalometry and magnetic resonance imaging. The soft palate thickness, mandibular plane-hyoid (MP-H) distance, posterior airway space (PAS) diameters and area, and tongue volume were calculated.
RESULTS: Compared to controls, the OSA group demonstr
