A cluster-randomised controlled trial evaluating the effects of a blended care intervention in pregnancy and postpartum on weight, health behaviour, and mental health in women with low socio-economic status.

OBJECTIVES: Pregnancy and the early postpartum period are key for maternal health, with excessive weight gain posing long-term risks. Women with low socio-economic status (SES) are at increased risk, but this group is often not reached. Mobile Health (mHealth) solutions, combined with face-to-face counselling, might better reach such a vulnerable population. The I-PREGNO study evaluated a blended care intervention to improve health behaviours and mental health in women with low SES during the perinatal period. STUDY DESIGN: This two-arm, cluster-randomised controlled trial included an interve

Product Development Study of Freeze-Dried Apples Enriched with Sea Buckthorn Juice and Calcium Lactate.

Enriched or fortified foods are typically linked to ultra-processed foods, limiting the choice of functional food in the market. Addressing the market potential, particularly the elder population with osteoporosis, the functional food industry should consider developing a healthy snack enriched with bioactive substances. This study aimed to produce freeze-dried Polish Gala apple with improved antioxidant properties and calcium content via impregnation or osmotic dehydration process. The solutions containing various concentrations of sea buckthorn (SB) juice and inulin were prepared at differen

The Impact of Dietary Diversity, Lifestyle, and Blood Lipids on Carotid Atherosclerosis: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Carotid atherosclerosis is a common arterial wall lesion that causes narrowing and occlusion of the arteries and is the basis of cardiovascular events. Dietary habits, lifestyle, and lipid metabolism should be considered integrally in the context of carotid atherosclerosis (CAS). However, this area has been investigated less often in China. To understand the prevalence of CAS in China and the impact of dietary diversity and habits, lifestyle, and lipid metabolism on CAS as well as its predictive factors, a cross-sectional study was performed in two northern and southern Chinese tertiary hospit

Past, Present, and Future of Phosphate Management.

Cardiovascular (CV) disease (CVD) accounts for >50% of deaths with known causes in patients on dialysis. Elevated serum phosphorus levels are an important nontraditional risk factor for bone mineral disease and CVD in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Given that phosphorus concentrations drive other disorders associated with increased CV risk (e.g., endothelial dysfunction, vascular calcification, fibroblast growth factor-23, parathyroid hormone), phosphate is a logical target to improve CV health. Phosphate binders are the only pharmacologic treatment approved for hyperphosphatemia.

Prospective associations between parental substance use and youth highly processed food intake in the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study.

BACKGROUND: Given growing evidence of overlap in characteristics of addictive substances and highly processed foods (e.g., ice cream), transdiagnostic approaches may be appropriate. Prior work indicates youth with parents who use addictive substances are at risk for greater substance use. The current study tested hypotheses that parental substance use behaviors would prospectively predict greater youth highly processed food intake [but not minimally processed food intake (e.g., fruit)]. METHODS: The Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study was a longitudinal birth cohort study of youth (N =

Overweight and obese children with optimal control in the T1D Exchange Registry: How are they different from lean children with optimal control?

AIMS: Increased adiposity is a risk factor for suboptimal diabetes control and cardiovascular disease (CVD) complications. Our goal was to identify modifiable behavioral characteristics of overweight and obese pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) who achieve optimal glycemic control and to evaluate their CVD risk compared to lean patients. Our hypothesis was that optimally controlled obese and overweight participants require more total daily insulin and are at higher CVD risk compared to optimally controlled lean participants. METHODS: We analyzed a cohort of 9263 participa
