[Disorders of socialization in children and adolescents].

UNLABELLED: According to psychiatric classification, problems in effective socialization adjustment are characteristic of Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), autism and Asperger syndromes. However, working in a clinic divulges a significantly sizable section of the population that faces problems in social functioning but does not fit either of the two aforementioned psychiatric diagnoses. Over the years a number of informal diagnoses have been developed for this group. The current literature reviews these diagnoses and deals with the question of whether these diagnoses are indeed different

Enhancing Brain-Computer Interface Performance by Incorporating Brain-to-Brain Coupling.

Human cooperation relies on key features of social interaction in order to reach desirable outcomes. Similarly, human-robot interaction may benefit from integration with human-human interaction factors. In this paper, we aim to investigate brain-to-brain coupling during motor imagery (MI)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) training using eye-contact and hand-touch interaction. Twelve pairs of friends (experimental group) and 10 pairs of strangers (control group) were recruited for MI-based BCI tests concurrent with electroencephalography (EEG) hyperscanning. Event-related desynchronization (

[Social cognition in patients with mood disorders. Part II: bipolar disorder : a selective review of the literature].

OBJECTIVE: Overview on the current knowledge regarding social cognition in patients with bipolar disorder. METHODS: Selective literature research on deficits in social cognition intrinsic to bipolar disorder, their occurrence and effects. RESULTS: Deficits in social cognition are considered to be core features of bipolar disorder. They are apparent during acute episodes of the disorder, endure when patients are in remission and have a significant negative impact on the patients' psychosocial outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: It is important to consider deficits in social cognition as an integral part

Interventions to improve social circumstances of people with mental health conditions: a rapid evidence synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Poor social circumstances can induce, exacerbate and prolong symptoms of mental health conditions, while having a mental health condition can also lead to worse social outcomes. Many people with mental health conditions prioritise improvement in social and functional outcomes over reduction in clinical symptoms. Interventions that improve social circumstances in this population should thus be considered a priority for research and policy. METHODS: This rapid evidence synthesis reports on randomised controlled trials of interventions to improve social circumstances across eight soc

An introduction to North Carolina Integrated Care for Kids (NC InCK): A model to support whole-child health.

We describe the design of the North Carolina Integrated Care for Kids (NC InCK) model. NC InCK is one of seven nationwide CMMI-funded pediatric health care delivery models that integrate services to promote whole-child health. NC InCK was collaboratively designed by health care systems, the state Medicaid agency, Medicaid managed care organizations, child-serving organizations across multiple sectors, and families. The model uses three key approaches to integrate care: 1) a risk stratification algorithm using data across healthcare, education, and social systems to holistically understand need

Gendered Illnesses and Embodied Knowledge: A Phenomenological Body-Mapping Study of Endometriosis.

Endometriosis, a chronic health condition primarily associated with women, is not just a physical experience but is an invisible, gendered illness deeply intertwined with societal narratives that often overlook women's embodied knowledge. This research employs body-mapping as a visual, verbal, and symbolic methodology to foreground embodied experiences and explore how social perceptions shape women's lived realities of endometriosis. Through an interpretive phenomenological analysis of six body maps, this research reveals conforming bodies, which internalize societal stigmas, resulting in disc

Beyond the Biomedical Model: A Critical Review of the Approach to Chronic Pain and the Proposal of an Integrated Functional Model.

Chronic pain represents one of the most complex challenges of contemporary medicine. This narrative review critically analyzes the limitations of the traditional biomedical model in addressing chronic pain, highlighting how its reductionist vision is inadequate to effectively understand and treat this condition. The conceptual evolution of pain from a simple symptom to a codified "disease" is examined, highlighting the incongruities of this approach. The contribution of the bio-psycho-social model is discussed, recognizing its merits but also its applicative limits. Finally, the integration of

Efficacy of antidepressant medications in children and adolescents with non-obsessive-compulsive disorder anxiety disorders: a systematic assessment.

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety disorders are relatively common psychiatric illnesses in children and adolescents. In young people, such disorders are likely to show severe outcomes and adversely impact on multiple aspects of personality and social integration. AREA COVERED: This article aims to analyze systematically the efficacy of both old- and new-generation antidepressants in children and adolescents diagnosed with non-obsessive-compulsive disorder anxiety disorders. EXPERT OPINION: Reviewed data demonstrate that social phobia is the only pediatric anxiety disorder whose response to antidepressan…

[Dermato-oncological rehabilitation].

National insurance companies in Germany support health cures for patients with malignant tumors (malignant melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, Merkel cell tumor, malignant cutaneous lymphoma). The clinical requirements are an invasively growing tumor, problems of self-assurance, and dis-integration of the patient regarding his social and/or professional environment. The decision for a health cure is made by the treating dermatologist in the hospital. In this context, the following sociomedical criteria should be applied: impairment, disability, and handicap. Usually, rehabilitation starts after

The mentally ill in jails and prisons: towards an integrated model of prevention.

Jails and prisons have become a final destination for persons with severe mental illness in America. Addiction, homelessness, and fragmentation of services have contributed to the problem, and have underscored the need for new models of service delivery. Project Link is a university-led consortium of five community agencies in Monroe County, New York that spans healthcare, social service and criminal justice systems. The program features a mobile treatment team with a forensic psychiatrist, a dual diagnosis treatment residence, and culturally competent staff. This paper discusses the importanc

Cross-cultural aspects of alcoholism in the elderly.

Thus far, we know relatively little about alcoholism among the elderly across cultures. However, extrapolation from available reports suggests certain common features across cultures. These include an inverse relationship between age and problem-producing dosages, increased risk of elderly alcoholics to trauma, greater efficacy of milieu changes with age, and a concentration of elderly alcoholics in cities. Conversely, certain other aspects of aging that vary across cultures may influence alcoholism in the elderly. These include the biological concomitants of aging, social status and the role

Understanding how movement signals shape early social coordination and learning.

From early in life, social interactions rely on a rich exchange of nonverbal information. This review paper focuses on the nonverbal, kinematic information conveyed by how social partners move and proposes that such movement modulations may facilitate interpersonal coordination between infants and adults, as well as support infants' learning in early interactions. So far, findings on movement modulations have been investigated in isolation: sensorimotor communication in interpersonal coordination between adults (signaling) on the one hand, and in early teaching interactions between adults and

[Psychiatric emergencies in the prehospital setting : interprofessional models].

Psychiatric prehospital emergencies account for an increasing proportion and involve multiple professional disciplines. Faced with a population with somatic, psychiatric, and social challenges, various interprofessional models have been developed to improve care, limit coercion, and reduce the burden on emergency departments. They operate at different levels: upstream triage by emergency call centers, multidisciplinary co-response combining law enforcement, emergency services, and mental health, or integration of psychiatric expertise within a prehospital team with/without systematic police in

[Alcohol in the media, marketing communications, and consumption behaviors].

Alcohol consumption is one of the leading risk factors for morbidity and mortality worldwide. Alcohol marketing communications play a central role in shaping social norms and drinking behaviors. The rapid expansion of digital media has transformed alcohol promotion, increasing its reach, personalization, and integration into daily life. Exposure to alcohol marketing communications is associated with earlier initiation of drinking, increased consumption, and more intense drinking patterns, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Alcohol marketing communication, including in the digital

Generation of human induced pluripotent stem cells (SDUKIi002-A) from a 22-year-old male diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorders are characterized by impaired social interaction and communication as well as restricted and repetitive interests and behavior. Increasing evidence points to an early-stage disruption of brain development. A human-induced pluripotent stem cell line (SDUKIi002-A) was created from skin fibroblasts from a 22-year old autistic male identified in the "FYNEN-cohort" of Southern Denmark. Reprogramming of the fibroblasts was performed using integration-free episomal plasmids. Further characterization confirmed the expression of pluripotency markers, differentiation into the t

Craniofacial Interventions in Children.

Craniofacial interventions are common and the surgical options continue to grow. The issues encountered include micrognathia, macroglossia, midface hypoplasia, hearing loss, facial nerve palsy, hemifacial microsomia, and microtia. In addition, a unifying theme is complex upper airway obstruction. Throughout a child's life the focus of interventions may change from airway management to speech, hearing, and language optimization, and finally to decannulation and procedures aimed at social integration and self-esteem. Otolaryngologists play an important role is this arena and provide high-quality…

[Prosthetic rehabilitation in ectodermal dysplasia. Case report].

The oral and dental rehabilitation of patients with ectodermal dysplasia is a demanding and complex process. Close cooperation of medical and dental specialists is is mandatory. The individual age related situation and aspects of social integration have to be considered, when doing treatment planning for these patients. A major problem is the highly reduced number of teeth, the impaired development of the jaws and the dysplastic alteration of the teeth. The prosthodontic rehabilitation of a young girl with the congenital disease of ectodermal dysplasia is presented and discussed.

Epidemiology of suicidal behavior among Korean adolescents.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of suicidal behaviors and their relation to background characteristics, social integration, academic stress, psychological distress, and substance use in a stratified random sample of 9886 high school students in Korea. In a multiple logistic regression, we found that depression was the strongest predictor of suicidal behaviors. The other factors significantly associated with suicidal behaviors were gender, academic stress, hostility and substance use. These results indicate that early identification of risk factors for suicidal behavior…

BSO-AD: An Ontology for Representing and Harmonizing Behavioral Social Knowledge in ADRD.

Behavioral and social factors (BSFs) substantially influence the risk, onset, and progression of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), yet BSF-related knowledge remains scattered across heterogeneous sources, posing critical challenges for data harmonization and evidence synthesis. To address this gap, we present the Behavioral Social Data and Knowledge Ontology for ADRD (BSO-AD), a FAIR-compliant semantic resource for representing and harmonizing BSFs and ADRD-related knowledge. BSO-AD was developed following established ontology design principles with reuse of existing ontologies
