BACKGROUND: Social network analysis can elucidate tuberculosis transmission dynamics outside the home and may inform novel network-based case-finding strategies.
METHODS: We assessed the association between social network characteristics and prevalent tuberculosis infection among residents (aged ≥15 years) of 9 rural communities in Eastern Uganda. Social contacts named during a census were used to create community-specific nonhousehold social networks. We evaluated whether social network structure and characteristics of first-degree contacts (sex, human immunodeficiency virus [HIV] status, tu

BACKGROUND: Long-term conditions pose major challenges for healthcare systems. Optimizing self-management of people with long-term conditions is an important strategy to improve quality of life, health outcomes, patient experiences in healthcare, and the sustainability of healthcare systems. Much research on self-management focuses on individual competencies, while the social systems of support that facilitate self-management are underexplored. The presented study aims to explore the role of social systems of support for self-management and quality of life, focusing on the social networks of p

Depression is one of the most common chronic mental disorders, which is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients. Depression often leads to offensive and defensive behaviours but the underlying mechanisms are not known. We propose that the aggressive behaviours in depression can be modelled in animal experiments. In this study, we successfully established a mouse model of depression using the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) paradigm and detected aggressive and social dominance behaviours in rodents by resident/intruder test and social dominance tube test (SDTT), respecti

Background/Objectives: Food and nutritional insecurity (FNI) is a major social determinant of health that disproportionately affects older adults, with significant implications for their health, nutrition, and well-being. In this context, this scoping review aims to map and synthesize the available scientific evidence on the main determinants of FNI among older adults, considering socioeconomic, health-related, functional, psychosocial, and structural factors. Methods: A scoping review was conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and reported following the PRISMA-Sc

Background/Objectives: Community-based drug rehabilitation is a key component of public health strategies in China, with anti-drug social workers playing a frontline role in relapse prevention, social reintegration, and long-term recovery. However, the sustainability and effectiveness of this workforce remain uncertain due to complex organisational and structural conditions. This study aims to examine the professional roles, work-related challenges, and coping strategies of anti-drug social workers within community-based rehabilitation systems. Methods: A systematic review was conducted in acc

PURPOSE: Osteoporosis is among the most prevalent chronic conditions, affecting millions of individuals and associated with a substantial fracture burden. Osteoporotic vertebral fractures lead to structural damage, functional impairment, pain, loss of mobility, reduced social participation, and increased mortality. Despite the clinical and social-medical relevance of this condition, standardized recommendations for disability assessment within the German Social Compensation Law have been lacking. The aim of this study was to develop nationally uniform, ICF-oriented criteria for determining the

INTRODUCTION: Recovery Colleges (RCs) for people with substance use and mental health challenges represent an innovation in mental health services, emphasising co-creation and adult learning. Students and course facilitators with diverse experiences engage in collaborative learning in these settings by sharing experiences, knowledge, and skills. This paper examines the social frameworks that facilitate or hinder sharing within RCs.
METHODS: We conducted an ethnographic study in two distinct RC settings, using participatory observation and semi-structured interviews with facilitators, students

All political parties in Norway agree that social inequalities in health comprise a public health problem and should be reduced. Against this background, the Council on Social Inequalities in Health has taken action to provide specific advice to reduce social health differences. Our recommendations focus on the entire social gradient rather than just poverty and the socially disadvantaged. By proposing action on the social determinants of health such as affordable child-care, education, living environments and income structures, we aim to facilitate a possible re-orientation of policy away fro

BACKGROUND: Suicide caused by depression in adolescents is a major global public health challenge, but the assessment of suicide risk in this population remains inadequate. This study aims to use network analysis to examine the interrelationships between suicide risk, childhood abuse, depression, hopelessness, and social support in treatment-naïve adolescent depression patients.
METHOD: The study included 518 treatment-naïve adolescent depression patients aged 10-18 (393 females and 125 males). General patient information was collected, and assessments were conducted using the Suicidal Behavi

Sex differences in responses to social signals are traditionally attributed to downstream processes of receiver motivation and signal valuation. However, an alternative hypothesis suggests that such dimorphism originates earlier at the level of perceptual organization. Multimodal communication provides an ideal model to test these possibilities, as sensory streams must be bound before valuation. Here I examine sex-specific sensitivity to the temporal structure of audio-visual displays in the starling Sturnus vulgaris. Using a robotic taxidermic model in field conditions, I examined early refle

Limosilactobacillus reuteri has attracted attention for its potential to modulate the gut-brain axis. This study investigates whether L. reuteri administration mitigates autism-related abnormalities in a maternal separation rat model of autism. Male Wistar rats were divided into maternal-separated L. reuteri-treated (MS+LR), maternal-separated placebo-treated (MS), and non-separated control groups. Behavioral assessments evaluated autism-related behaviors, including social interaction, repetitive behavior, anxiety, and hyperactivity. Immunohistochemical analysis of the hypothalamus assessed ox

What's on the gay (legal) agenda? This study addresses this question by examining the press releases of national LGBT legal advocacy organizations in response to both new opportunities, after decisions such as U.S. v. Windsor (2013) and Obergefell v. Hodges (2015), and significant challenges such as the election of Donald Trump in 2016 and his subsequent conservative judicial appointments. Using original data from more than 2,800 press releases filed by the largest LGBT legal advocacy organizations from 2010 to 2019, we analyze the LGBT legal agenda and explore how it evolved throughout this p

Co-occurring internalizing symptoms are common and important to assess in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). One frequently used child self-report measure of internalizing symptoms is the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scales (RCADS), yet the psychometric properties of the RCADS remain unexamined in children referred for ADHD specifically. The present study evaluated the RCADS in 117 children (ages 8-12; 66% male) evaluated for suspected ADHD at an ADHD specialty clinic (83% met criteria for ADHD). In addition to the RCADS, children completed measures of socia

In preparation for ICD-11, the adjustment disorder (AjD) diagnosis has undergone considerable revisions; however, the latent structure of AjD remains uncertain. It is unclear whether AjD is best represented as a unidimensional or multidimensional construct. This study performed a comprehensive assessment of the latent structure of AjD symptomatology and assessed its concurrent and discriminant validity. Individuals who experienced involuntary job loss (N = 333) completed a self-report measure of AjD symptoms. Seven alternative models of AjD were tested using confirmatory factor analysis. Gener

Challenging behaviors in young children with autism and intellectual disabilities pose significant barriers to learning and inclusion. The Prevent-Teach-Reinforce for Young Children (PTR-YC) program is an evidence-based intervention that addresses these behaviors according to Positive Behavior Intervention Support principles. It is essential to assess the social validity of an intervention, when implemented into a public service system, to ensure sustainability and relevance to stakeholders. The present study aimed to document the social validity of PTR-YC from the point of view of three key i

AIMS: To apply social network analysis (SNA) to investigate whether frequency and severity of gambling problems were associated with different network characteristics among friends, family and co-workers is an innovative way to look at relationships among individuals; the current study was the first, to our knowledge, to apply SNA to gambling behaviors.
DESIGN: Egocentric social network analysis was used to characterize formally the relationships between social network characteristics and gambling pathology.
SETTING: Laboratory-based questionnaire and interview administration.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines how perceived pressure from parents and friends to attain social status moderates the relationship between peer status (popularity, social preference) and popularity-motivated aggression (relational aggression, cyber aggression) over 1 year.
METHODS: A sample of 767 eighth-grade students completed self-reported measures of aggression and peer nominations of popularity and social preference.
RESULTS: Structural equation modeling showed that popularity was positively associated with both types of aggression, while social preference was negatively associated. H

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted family life and children's social worlds, disproportionately impacting structurally disadvantaged families. In a cohort of children born during the pandemic (N = 407, 51% male, 33.3% racially/ethnically minoritized), we modeled latent growth curves with children's externalizing and internalizing behaviors and social-emotional competence, assessed at 3 time points beginning at ∼15 months. Pandemic stressors had immediate impacts on behavior problems, associated with higher initial levels but not change over time. Conversely, pandemic impacts on competence showed

The article addresses the problem of social management of medical personnel amid the digital transformation of healthcare and significant changes in the relationships among medical workers, patients, administrative structures, and digital systems. In response to current interdisciplinary shifts, an integrated model for managing medical personnel is proposed - one that accounts for macrosocial factors, mechanisms of social perception related to the profession, and aggregated indicators at the level of the workers' subjective world. The methodological foundation is a systems approach, within whi
