The susceptibility of severe combined immune deficiency (SCID) mice to experimental systemic cryptococcosis was studied. SCID mice were at least 16-fold more susceptible to lethal infection than were immunocompetent control mice (P < 0.001). Histological assessment showed that control mice responded with a granulomatous inflammatory response, whereas SCID mice showed no evidence of a cellular host response. Meningitis caused by Rhodotorula spp. in HIV-infected patients has not been reported previously. We present a brief review of the literature regarding medically important species of Rhodotorula and a case of meningitis caused by Rhodotorula rubra in an HIV-infected patient. The diagnosis was confirmed by the isolation of the fungus from the CSF. The antigens of Pneumocystis carinii cysts isolated from pigs and humans were compared by the Western immunoblotting technique. Convalescent pig serum reacted with two antigens (approximately 78 kDa and 32.5 kDa) of porcine P. carinii cysts, whereas convalescent serum from humans did not react with porcine P. carinii cyst antigens. The results indicate that porcine and human P. carinii cysts are antigenically distinct.

Gastric zygomycosis in a patient with gastric cancer was described. Colonization was diagnosed because broad sparsely septate hyphae were identified in the necrotic tissue of gastric biopsied specimens. No fungus was present within viable tissue. Positive cultures for Rhizopus microsporus var. rhizopodiformis were obtained from fragments of biopsied specimens. A case of disseminated cryptococcosis in a North Island kiwi (Apteryx australis mantelli) caused by Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii (serotype B) is reported. This is the first case of cryptococcosis to be reported in a kiwi and is also the first isolation of C. neoformans var. gattii from a veterinary source in New Zealand. The kiwi is an example of a ratite bird and as such has a lower body temperature approximating that of a mammal.
