The prevalence of nausea in the community: psychological, social and somatic factors.

Nausea is a commonly reported symptom with a point prevalence of about 12% in the community. Nausea is a prominent symptom in functional gastrointestinal disorders and patients with anxiety and depression frequently present gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and abdominal discomfort as their main problem when they consult a doctor. Functional gastrointestinal disorders are strongly related to anxiety and depressive disorders with a lifetime prevalence of 80--90% in samples from clinics of gastroenterology. This study examines the relationship between anxiety disorders, depressions and na

Segmental definition--Part IV. Updating the differential for somatic and visceral inputs.

The first three parts of this series presented a standardized method of motion testing for motor behaviors specific to segmental dysfunction. When applied to clinical research studies, analysis of these palpatory data differentiated viscero-somatic from somato-somatic reflex manifestations in the thoracic region of subjects with renal dysfunction and/or hypertension. This update for the differential adds new observations regarding palpable findings, specifically at the spinal levels where linkage of costal and vertebral motion asymmetries identified the presence of increased visceral inputs. Developing a screening index for community studies of somatization disorder.

Despite the low prevalence of somatization disorder in the community, the section of the Diagnostic Interview Schedule used to make the diagnosis--as well as previous diagnostic interviews for the related diagnoses of hysteria, and Briquet's syndrome--is quite lengthy. This study evaluates a somatization disorder screening index derived from completed interviews from the NIMH sponsored Epidemiologic Catchment Area program. A screening index comprised of 11 symptoms of somatization was derived at the Duke ECA site and replicated across the Johns Hopkins, Yale, and Washington University sites. A

Efficacy of Nijmegen Questionnaire in recognition of the hyperventilation syndrome.

The pattern of complaints of patients with the hyperventilation syndrome (HVS) was studied on the basis of the Nijmegen HVS Questionnaire (van Doorn, Colla, Folgering). This list was completed by 75 patients with the clinical diagnosis HVS. Non-metric principal components analysis (NMPCA) showed that the structure was three-dimensional, the dimensions being labelled: Shortness of breath (HVS-1), Peripheral tetany (HVS-II), Central tetany (HVS-III). The questionnaire's differentiating ability was investigated by comparing HVS patients with non-HVS persons (80 persons employed in health care). A

Dissociation predicts symptom-related treatment outcome in short-term inpatient psychotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has indicated that dissociation might be a negative predictor of treatment outcome in cognitive behavioural therapy for patients with obsessive-compulsive and anxiety disorders. Using a naturalistic design it was hypothesized that higher levels of dissociation predict poorer outcome in inpatients with affective, anxiety and somatoform disorders participating in a brief psychodynamic psychotherapy. METHOD: A total of 133 patients completed the Symptom Check List (SCL-90), the German short version of the Dissociative Experiences Scale and the Inventory of Interperso…

Somatic distress as a distinct psychological dimension.

BACKGROUND: Somatoform disorders such as neurasthenia and chronic fatigue are characterized by a combination of prolonged fatigue and disabling neuropsychological and neuromuscular symptoms. However, the debate concerning the theoretical underpinnings of somatic disorders resembles the perennial dispute over the taxonomy of anxiety and depression. The objective of this study is to analyse the dimensional structure of items measuring anxiety, depression, phobic anxiety, somatic distress, and insomnia. It is anticipated that somatic distress should emerge as empirically distinct from measures of…
