A micro-analytical method based on spotting urine samples (20μL) onto blood/urine spot collection cards followed by air-drying and extraction (dried urine spot, DUS) was developed and validated for the screening/confirmation assay of morphine, 6-methylacetylmorphine (6-MAM), codeine, cocaine and benzoylecgonine (BZE). In this study, copper, zinc, magnesium, manganese, selenium, and iron of urine and hair were measured in the patients with tuberculous (TB) pleurisy (n = 24) and in the control group (n = 20). The dissolution of iron and tin from tinplate cans filled with tomato purée (pH 4.34) and dioctyl sebacate oil (DOS), essential onion oil (EOO) or potassium nitrate was studied using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), while nitrate was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). A simple and selective method for the determination of cadmium in water samples by FAAS after solid phase extraction has been developed. Mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) determinations were carried out to evaluate human exposure to those elements through fish consumption in Spain and Portugal. The objective of this investigation was to protect rats against exocrine pancreatic atrophy by adding 22% fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS), a natural fructan obtained from inulin, to the 50% copper-deficient diets containing qualitatively and quantitatively different carbohydrates. To study the mechanism of the reduced serum selenium concentration in patients with liver damage we administered 200 micrograms (2.53 mumol) selenium daily as selenium-rich yeast to 8 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis and 8 healthy controls over 16 weeks. Initially selenium concentrations in serum were 24% lower (P less than 0.001) in patients than controls. During supplementation serum selenium levels increased in both groups but the difference between them persisted. Bone mineral content of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th lumbar vertebrae (lumbar BMC) was measured in 70 normal women (aged 19-88 years) and 72 post-menopausal women (aged 58-89 years) with primary osteoporosis using dual-photon (153Gd) absorptiometry.
