Reduced oxygen supply to the prefrontal cortex during the Stroop task in migraine patients with aura: A preliminary functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

The role of the cerebrovascular system in migraine pathogenesis is critical. Several studies have demonstrated alterations in the regional cerebral blood flow that persist during headache-free intervals. In the present study, we aimed to measure the prefrontal hemodynamic responses to the cognitive task in interictal episodic migraineurs. We enrolled eight migraine patients with aura (mean age 25.75 ± 4.39 years), twelve migraine patients without aura (mean age 28.25 ± 6.59 years), and eleven age- and education-matched healthy subjects. We employed the Victoria Stroop task to assess executive

Evaluation of near-infrared Raman spectroscopy in the differentiation of cortical bone, trabecular bone, and Bio-Oss bone graft: an ex-vivo study.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the ability of near-infrared Raman spectroscopy (near-IR RS) to differentiate among cortical bone, trabecular bone, and Bio-Oss, a bovinebone-based graft material. STUDY DESIGN: We obtained a thinly sliced section of the mandible to collect cortical and trabecular bone samples and placed compacted Bio-Oss bone graft into a partially edentulous mandible in a dry human skull to obtain a comparable Bio-Oss sample. We performed near-IR RS of the 3 samples and evaluated the resultant Raman spectra to evaluate their differences. RESULTS: We identified 3 sets of spectroscopi

IMPACT OF HIGH-DOSE VASOPRESSOR DURING ENDOTOXIC SHOCK ON THE CEREBRAL, LINGUAL, HEPATIC, AND RENAL MICROCIRCULATION EVALUATED BY NEAR-INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY IN SWINE.

Background: High-dose vasopressors maintain blood pressure during septic shock but may adversely reduce microcirculation in vital organs. We assessed the effect of high-dose norepinephrine and vasopressin on the microcirculation of the brain, tongue, liver, and kidney during endotoxic shock using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Methods: Thirteen pigs (24.5 ± 1.8 kg) were anesthetized, and an NIRS probe was attached directly to each organ. Approximately 0.2, 0.5, 1, and 2 μg/kg/min of norepinephrine were administered in a stepwise manner, followed by 0.5, 1, 2, and 5 μg/kg/min of sodium nitr

Near-infrared spectroscopy as a feasible method for the differentiation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae from Neisseria commensals and antimicrobial resistant from susceptible gonococcal strains.

Rapid and cost-effective diagnosis of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) are important measures for the control and management of gonococcal infection. Current diagnostic tools such as nucleic acid amplification tests and bacterial culture are not feasible in many resource-poor settings, and so syndromic patient management is commonplace. Alternative cost-effective diagnostic tools are therefore needed. Here, we sought to explore the utility and feasibility of Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) to (1) identify and differentiate NG from Neisseria commensals and (2) to differentiate fully susceptible NG

Effect of parietal transcranial magnetic stimulation on spatial working memory in healthy elderly persons--comparison of near infrared spectroscopy for young and elderly.

In a previous study, we succeeded in improving the spatial working memory (WM) performance in healthy young persons by applying transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to the parietal cortex and simultaneously measuring the oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) level using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Since an improvement in WM was observed when TMS was applied to the right parietal cortex, the oxy-Hb distribution seemed to support a model of hemispheric asymmetry (HA). In the present study, we used the same study design to evaluate healthy elderly persons and investigated the effect of TMS on

Predictive value of cerebral oxygenation with near infrared spectroscopy for in-hospital mortality in pediatric congenital heart disease surgery: a retrospective observational study.

AIM: Congenital heart disease still has significant morbidity and mortality despite advances in surgery. Inadequate tissue perfusion is thought to be the primary cause. Monitoring children with cerebral oxygenation with near infrared spectroscopy before and after surgery may predict pre- and post-operative mortality. This study evaluated the benefits of this method in terms of mortality. METHOD: This study is a retrospective, observational, single-center study. A total of 166 patients who underwent congenital heart surgery were included in the study. In-hospital mortality was analyzed in two g

The Use of Heart Rate Responses Extracted From Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Data as a Measure of Speech Discrimination Ability in Sleeping Infants.

OBJECTIVES: Cardiac responses (e.g., heart rate changes) due to an autonomous response to sensory stimuli have been reported in several studies. This study investigated whether heart rate information extracted from functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) data can be used to assess the discrimination of speech sounds in sleeping infants. This study also investigated the adaptation of the heart rate response over multiple, sequential stimulus presentations. DESIGN: fNIRS data were recorded from 23 infants with no known hearing loss, aged 2 to 10 months. Speech syllables were presented usi

Cortical activity measured by functional near infrared spectroscopy during a theory of mind task in subjects with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and healthy controls.

Theory of Mind (ToM) deficits interfere in social cognitive functioning in schizophrenia (SCZ) and are increasingly recognized to do so in bipolar disorder (BD), however their clinical and neurobiological correlates remain unclear. This study represents the first direct comparison of subjects with SCZ (N = 26), BD (N = 26) and healthy controls (N = 33) in cortical activity during the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Task (RMET) using functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) with the control condition (CC) involving gender identification via the same stimuli. The three groups were compared wit

The relationship between the superior frontal cortex and alpha oscillation in a flanker task: Simultaneous recording of electroencephalogram (EEG) and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS).

Activity in the alpha band of the electroencephalogram (EEG) reflects functional inhibition of the cerebral cortex. The superior frontal cortex (SFC) is known to control alpha activity. Based on this relationship between SFC and alpha, we hypothesized that SFC controlled alpha mediates proactive control over interference. In this study, we examined the relationship between SFC and alpha in the flanker task by simultaneously recording EEG and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Forty participants performed a flanker task with occasional (compatible 75%, incompatible 25%) and successive (incompat

Activation of the prefrontal cortex while performing a task at preferred slow pace and metronome slow pace: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Individuals have a preferred pace at which they perform voluntary repetitive movements. Previous studies have reported that greater activation of the prefrontal cortex was observed during self-initiated movements than during externally triggered movements. The purpose of the present study is to compare the activation of the prefrontal cortex induced when the subjects performed a peg-board task at their preferred slow pace (PSP, the self-initiated condition) with that induced when they performed the same task at metronome slow pace (MSP, the externally triggered condition) using functional near

The association of near-infrared spectroscopy-derived tissue oxygenation measurements with sepsis syndromes, organ dysfunction and mortality in emergency department patients with sepsis.

INTRODUCTION: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) noninvasively measures peripheral tissue oxygen saturation (StO₂). NIRS may be utilized along with a vascular occlusion test, in which limb blood flow is temporarily occluded and released, to quantify a tissue bed's rate of oxygen exchange during ischemia and recovery. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that NIRS-derived StO₂ measures (StO₂ initial, StO₂ occlusion and StO₂ recovery) identify patients who are in shock and at increased risk of organ dysfunction (Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score ≥ 2 at 24 hours) a

Changes in cerebral blood oxygenation of the frontal lobe induced by direct electrical stimulation of thalamus and globus pallidus: a near infrared spectroscopy study.

OBJECTIVE: Blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) contrast functional MRI images show activated cortical areas by detecting a reduced concentration of deoxyhaemoglobin (deoxy-Hb) during neuronal activity; however, near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has shown various patterns of cerebral blood oxygenation (CBO) changes in the frontal lobe during cognitive tasks. To determine if various patterns of CBO changes occur in the frontal lobe when the brain is directly stimulated, changes in CBO in the frontal lobe induced by deep brain stimulation in patients with implanted electrodes were evaluated.

Open-Window Thoracostomy Closure Using a Free Musculocutaneous Flap, Fascia Patch Graft, and Postoperative Compression Guided by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy: A Case Report.

Bronchopleural fistula is a rare but severe complication of lung resection, associated with significant morbidity and mortality, especially when an open-window thoracostomy is required. The clinical and surgical management is complex and becomes even more challenging in the presence of underlying conditions such as recurrent infections or malignancy. Postoperative management is equally demanding, as local compression may help prevent fistula recurrence but can compromise flap perfusion. A 65-year-old male with a history of right upper lobectomy and subsequent sublobar resection for lung adenoc

Modulation of Brain Activity in Patients with Acute Non-Specific Low Back Pain by Wentong Guan Therapy: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Study.

BACKGROUND: Wentong Guan Therapy (WTG) integrates techniques from Chinese massage, moxibustion, scraping, and cupping. Its analgesic mechanisms remain unclear. The brain functional network in patients with acute non-specific low back pain (ANSLBP) is impaired, and central nervous system regulation is one of the important mechanisms through which traditional Chinese medicine external therapies alleviate pain and functional impairment in ANSLBP. This study neurophysiologically evaluates WTG's pain modulation effect on the cerebral cortex in acute non-specific low back pain (ANSLBP). METHODS: Tw
