Speech summer camp for treating articulation disorders in cleft palate patients.

INTRODUCTION: Compensatory articulation disorder (CAD) severely affects speech intelligibility of cleft palate children. CAD must be treated with speech therapy. Children can manage articulation better when they use language in event contexts such as every day routines. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper is to study and compare two modalities of speech intervention in cleft palate children with associated CAD. The first modality is a conventional approach providing speech therapy in 1-h sessions, twice a week. The second modality is a speech summer camp in which children received therapy 4h…

A systematic review and narrative analysis of digital speech biomarkers in Motor Neuron Disease.

Motor Neuron Disease (MND) is a progressive and largely fatal neurodegeneritve disorder with a lifetime risk of approximately 1 in 300. At diagnosis, up to 25% of people with MND (pwMND) exhibit bulbar dysfunction. Currently, pwMND are assessed using clinical examination and diagnostic tools including the ALS Functional Rating Scale Revised (ALS-FRS(R)), a clinician-administered questionnaire with a single item on speech intelligibility. Here we report on the use of digital technologies to assess speech features as a marker of disease diagnosis and progression in pwMND. Google Scholar, PubMed,…

A New Protocol for Early Intervention in Infants with Cleft Palate: Language and Articulation.

PurposeChildren with cleft conditions are at increased risk of language and speech disorders. Velopharyngeal dysfunction is a common sequela of palate repair, and children may develop cleft-type speech characteristics, with consequences in the academic, social, and ultimately employment, domains. Infants with certain speech behaviors are more likely to present with increased intelligibility at school age. These behaviors could be embedded into general language development strategies and taught to infants by their caregivers. This paper describes a study protocol investigating the effects of ea

Comparison of sound processing strategies for osseointegrated bone conduction implants in mixed hearing loss: multiple-channel nonlinear versus single-channel linear processing.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluation of a single-channel linear bone conduction implant sound processor (S-BCI) and a multiple-channel nonlinear bone cond … significant subjective improvement with the M-BCI on all subscales relative to S-BCI. CONCLUSION: Speech intelligibility in noise is better with M-BCI than with S-BCI. This was attributed to better high-frequency gain provided by the M-BCI. Improved signal processing strategies may have contributed to subjective preference for the M-BCI.

[Direction of cochlear implant developments used for the correction of perimodiolar discrimination location].

Introduction: Cochlear implant is a hearing enhancement device that directly stimulates nerve cells with electrical impulses. The optimal placement of the implanted electrode array is crucial for device wearers. Numerous domestic and international studies have confirmed a significant correlation between the quality of restored electrical hearing after surgery. During optimal implantation, electrodes are placed as close as possible to the spiral ganglion cells, allowing for more focused stimulation to improve speech perception and speech intelligibility. Objective: Our aim is to investigate the…

Challenging Times for Cochlear Implant Users - Effect of Face Masks on Audiovisual Speech Understanding during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Unhindered auditory and visual signals are essential for a sufficient speech understanding of cochlear implant (CI) users. Face masks are an important hygiene measurement against the COVID-19 virus but disrupt these signals. This study determinates the extent and the mechanisms of speech intelligibility alteration in CI users caused by different face masks. The audiovisual German matrix sentence test was used to determine speech reception thresholds (SRT) in noise in different conditions (audiovisual, audio-only, speechreading and masked audiovisual using two different face masks). Thirty-seve…
