The relationship between chronic cough and paradoxical vocal fold movement: a review of the literature.

Chronic cough (CC) and paradoxical vocal fold movement (PVFM) are debilitating conditions. PVFM has been given many labels, including vocal cord dysfunction, Munchausen's stridor, functional inspiratory stridor, nonorganic functional or psychogenic upper airway obstruction, factitious asthma, psychogenic stridor, emotional laryngeal wheezing, and episodic laryngeal dyskinesia. Although CC and PVFM have been considered separate entities in many reports, there is preliminary support for the notion that there may be an underlying link between these two conditions. Speech pathologists have become

Acoustic analysis of voice in children with cleft lip and palate following vocal rehabilitation. Preliminary report.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is the most common craniofacial anomaly. CLP affects resonance, voice and speech. Besides the most frequently reported resonance and speech disorders, several reports have addressed acoustic abnormalities in the voice of patients with CLP. However, there are just a few reports focusing on vocal treatment in this population. OBJECTIVE: To study whether a Speech and Language Pathology (SLP) intervention including vocal rehabilitation for children with CLP and velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) provides significant improvement of abnormal acoustic parameter

Markers of schizophrenia at the prosody/pragmatics interface. Evidence from corpora of spontaneous speech interactions.

The speech of individuals with schizophrenia exhibits atypical prosody and pragmatic dysfunctions, producing monotony. The paper presents the outcomes of corpus-based research on the prosodic features of the pathology as they manifest in real-life spontaneous interactions. The research relies on a corpus of schizophrenic speech recorded during psychiatric interviews (CIPPS) compared to a sampling of non-pathological speech derived from the LABLITA corpus of spoken Italian, which has been selected according to comparability requirements. Corpora has been intensively analyzed in the Language int

Occurrence of communication and swallowing problems in neurological disorders: analysis of forty patients.

BACKGROUND: Communication and swallowing problems are common as a result of neurological conditions like stroke, traumatic brain injury, neoplasms of the nervous systems, viral encephalitis, diseases affecting neuromuscular junction and neuro degenerative conditions. The most frequently encountered problems are dysarthria, aphasia, dysphagia and apraxia of speech. OBJECTIVES: Although these disorders are mentioned in literature, very few studies describing the occurrence in different neurological conditions are available in Indian context. Hence, a need was felt to carry out such a study. ME

Smartphones Offer New Opportunities in Clinical Voice Research.

Smartphone technology provides new opportunities for recording standardized voice samples of patients and sending the files by e-mail to the voice laboratory. This drastically improves the collection of baseline data, as used in research on efficiency of voice treatments. However, the basic requirement is the suitability of smartphones for recording and digitizing pathologic voices (mainly characterized by period perturbations and noise) without significant distortion. In this experiment, two smartphones (a very inexpensive one and a high-level one) were tested and compared with direct microph

Effects of Speech and Language Therapists' Personality Traits and Cognitive Emotion Regulation on the Perceptual Evaluation of Dysphonia.

OBJECTIVE: As in many health care fields, it is essential to establish clinical standards for voice assessments; however, some individual characteristics of clinicians, such as their personalities, may affect assessment reliability. Therefore, this study aims to examine the relationship between the personality traits and cognitive emotion regulation strategies of speech-language therapists (SLTs) and their GRBAS (Grade, Roughness, Breathiness, Asthenia, Strain) scoring. METHOD: The study group comprised 33 SLTs and 9 women with dysphonia. The Five-Factor Personality Inventory (FFPI) and Cogni

From Clinic to Real Life: Speech-Language Therapists' Perspectives on Extratherapy Generalization in Children With Cleft Palate.

PURPOSE: Extratherapy generalization, defined as the transfer of sounds learned in the training environment to spontaneous speech outside the clinical setting, is a crucial yet underexplored facet of speech therapy in children with a cleft palate with or without a cleft lip (CP ± L). This study aimed to explore how speech-language pathologists (SLPs) experience and structure treatment activities to achieve extratherapy generalization in this population. METHOD: Fourteen SLPs, aged between 29 and 49 years, were included. They all worked in a first-line health care setting and had their own pri

Application of machine learning techniques to automate speech mispronunciation detection in children and adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Speech sound disorders (SSDs) are common in children and can affect academic and psychosocial outcomes. Clinical identification relies on expert auditory-perceptual assessment, which is time-intensive and may vary across raters. Automated screening tools could support triage when access to specialists is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and evaluate a deep learning (DL) classifier for detecting mispronunciation errors in standardized pediatric speech recordings obtained using a structured fricative-focused word elicitation protocol, using expert-adjudicated labels

Inferring speaker attributes in adductor spasmodic dysphonia: ratings from unfamiliar listeners.

PURPOSE: To determine whether unfamiliar listeners' perceptions of speakers with adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD) differ from control speakers on the parameters of relative age, confidence, tearfulness, and vocal effort and are related to speaker-rated vocal effort or voice-specific quality of life. METHOD: Twenty speakers with ADSD (including 6 speakers with ADSD plus tremor) and 20 age- and sex-matched controls provided speech recordings, completed a voice-specific quality-of-life instrument (Voice Handicap Index; Jacobson et al., 1997), and rated their own vocal effort. Twenty listeners

Perceptual Classification of Motor Speech Disorders: The Role of Severity, Speech Task, and Listener's Expertise.

PURPOSE: The clinical diagnosis of motor speech disorders (MSDs) is mainly based on perceptual approaches. However, studies on perceptual classification of MSDs often indicate low classification accuracy. The aim of this study was to determine in a forced-choice dichotomous decision-making task (a) how accuracy of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in perceptually classifying apraxia of speech (AoS) and dysarthria is impacted by speech task, severity of MSD, and listener's expertise and (b) which perceptual features they use to classify. METHOD: Speech samples from 29 neurotypical speakers,

[Speech therapy intervention in phonological disorders from the psycholinguistic paradigm of speech processing].

The aim of this study is to present a survey of speech therapy intervention in phonological disorders (PD). We will examine the concepts of normal phonological development and those involved in PD in order to understand how they have been dealt with, historically, in speech therapy intervention. Lastly, we will describe how evaluation and intervention are carried out from the speech processing paradigm. Phonetic phonological skills allow people to decode the phonic strings they hear so as to be able to gain access to their phonological form and meaning. These abilities also enable them to enco

Remote Assessment of Verbal Memory in Youth With Cochlear Implants During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Purpose Youth with cochlear implants (CIs) are at risk for delays in verbal short-term memory (STM)/working memory (WM), which adversely affect language, neurocognitive, and behavioral outcomes. Assessment of verbal STM/WM is critical for identifying and addressing these delays, but standard assessment procedures require face-to-face (FTF) administration. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility and validity of remote testing methods (teleassessment) of verbal STM/WM in youth with CIs as a method of addressing COVID-19-related restrictions on FTF test administration. Method T
