OBJECTIVE: To challenge the diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis in the mummy of Ramesses II that was suggested about 30 years ago and to propose a differential diagnosis for the changes that were detected in the mummy's spine and pelvis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the reliability of self reported joint counts to assess pain or swelling in ankylosing spondylitis (AS).
METHODS: 217 outpatients fulfilling the modified New York criteria for AS were asked to mark painful joints and swollen joints on two mannequins presenting 44 and 40 joints respectively. A doctor or research nurse assessed the same joints for pain and swelling on the same day, after completion by the patient, without information on the results of the patient's assessment.

We report on a 46-year-old man with a 4-year history of predominantly nocturnal pain at the thoracic and lumbar spine as well as accompanying morning stiffness and episodes of alternating buttock pain. At physical examination the patient presented with the typical traits for Marfan's syndrome (MFS), along with limitation of both chest expansion and movement in all planes of the lumbar spine. OBJECTIVES: This study was undertaken to see if brucella spondylitis existed as a cause of backache in Mumbai and to identify the clinical setting in patients of backache where brucella serology is indicated.
METHODS: In 18 months (June 1996-Dec. 1997) we performed tube agglutination test (TAT) for Brucella melitensis and abortus on 72 patients of low backache from Orthopaedics Department of a teritary health centre. A 71-year-old man was administered BCG (80 mg per week) for 8 weeks for prophylactic treatment of bladder cancer. We describe two young men in whom severe anterior uveitis developed following relatively minor corneal trauma. Investigation revealed ankylosing spondylitis in both cases; neither had previously experienced uveitis. We are unaware of any previous reports implicating minor ocular trauma in precipitating a first episode of uveitis associated with ankylosing spondylitis. The possibility of occult ankylosing spondylitis should be considered in cases of disproportionately large anterior chamber reactions to minor ocular trauma.

The results of segregation analyses in 75 families where the proband had ankylosing spondylitis, are presented. Among 86 patients selected as possibly having ankylosing spondylitis because of clinical symptoms and radiologically normal sacroiliac joints. HLA-B27 was positive in 41%. Four years later a representative sample of 38 individuals were re-examined and radiographed. Juvenile ankylosing spondylitis has its onset in childhood. Aortic insufficiency occurs in children and may precede the onset of symptoms of spondylitis. It may first be seen as peripheral arthritis and aortic valvulitis before clinically evident sacroiliitis is apparent. The HLA B27 marker makes it possible to identify those patients at increased risk for development of ankylosing spondylitis.
