Update of the Epidemiology of the Sporotrichosis Epidemic in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is a disease not requiring jurisdictional notification and consequently is underreported in Brazil. Therefore, the epidemiological picture even in hyperendemic states is unknown. Thus, we evaluated the occurrence of sporotrichosis throughout the territory of the southern state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul (RS). METHODS: We update the epidemiological situation of sporotrichosis in the southern region of this state and describe the emergence of this disease in the Metropolitan region. We engaged professionals from RS enrolled in animal health care in answering a quest

Treatment of cutaneous sporotrichosis with itraconazole--study of 645 patients.

BACKGROUND: Itraconazole has become the first choice for treatment of cutaneous sporotrichosis. However, this recommendation is based on case reports and small series. The safety and efficacy of itraconazole were evaluated in 645 patients who received a diagnosis on the basis of isolation of Sporothrix schenckii in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. METHODS: A standard regimen of itraconazole (100 mg/day orally) was used. Clinical and laboratory adverse events were assessed a grades 1-4. A multivariate Cox model was used to analyze the response to treatment. RESULTS: The median age was 43 years. Lympho…

Skin nodules with a linear distribution - a case study.

A man, 35 years of age, with an unremarkable past medical history, attended after developing purplish nodules on the left arm. The nodules were in a linear distribution and had developed during recent months after a minor initial injury. The nodules were moderately painful, but it was mainly the appearance of new nodules that motivated him to consult his general practitioner. On dermatological examination, six purple nodules were observed following a linear distribution along the back of the left hand and arm (Figure 1). They were of variable size. Some of the lesions had a discrete superficia

Zoonotic sporothricosis transmitted by cats in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A case report.

Sporotricosis is a ubiquitous mycosis characterized by nodular lesions of the cutaneous or subcutaneous tissues and adjacent lymphatics that usually suppurate and ulcerate. Secondary spread to the articular surface and bone or dissemination to the central nervous system, genitourinary tract or lungs is also possible. All forms of sporothricosis are caused by a single species, Sporothrix schenkii. In the great majority of cases the fungus gains entrance into the body through trauma to the skin with some kind of plant materials such as thorns or splinters. Zoonotic transmission is also possible …

Itraconazole for treatment of sporotrichosis in a dog residing on a Christmas tree farm.

Sporotrichosis was diagnosed in a 2-year-old male Golden Retriever that was allowed to roam free on the owner's Christmas tree farm in Minnesota. Clinical signs had been evident for 1 month and included swelling of the claw bed of the third digit on the left forelimb and a fluctuant nodular lesion in the area of the left carpus. Few organisms were seen in affected tissues, and diagnosis was confirmed on the basis of results of fungal culture. The condition responded to treatment with itraconazole. Previous reports of sporotrichosis in dogs have described lesions that were distributed predomina

Adjunctive laser-based antimicrobial photodynamic therapy using methylene blue for refractory feline sporotrichosis.

Feline sporotrichosis, a potentially zoonotic fungal infection caused by Sporothrix spp., represents a therapeutic challenge, especially in refractory cases. This report describes two cases that presented with refractory cutaneous lesions to conventional systemic treatment. Both cats were initially treated with a combination of itraconazole and potassium iodide for a prolonged period, resulting only in partial improvement and persistence of cutaneous lesions. Due to the lack of complete response, antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) was introduced as an adjuvant treatment. The protocol in…

Zoonotic sporotrichosis in humans and domestic cats: Profile of notifications and spatio-temporal distribution in Southeastern Brazil between 2017 and 2023.

The research addresses zoonotic sporotrichosis in Brazil, particularly caused by Sporothrix brasiliensis, highlighting its epidemiological severity. Transmission occurs through contact with sick animals, especially felines, and diagnosis in humans is challenging due to the low fungal load in the lesions. The study analyzed data from Information System for Notifiable Diseases (SINAN) and Zoonosis Surveillance Unit (UVZ) from January 2017 to March 2023, carried out in Contagem, Minas Gerais. Geospatial tools and statistical analysis revealed a significant increase in cases, peaking in 2021 for f…

Sporotrichosis transmitted by domestic cats: A case report.

Sporotrichosis is a subacute to chronic subcutaneous mycosis caused by dimorphic fungi of the Sporothrix spp. complex. It is considered the most frequent subcutaneous mycosis in Latin America and predominates in tropical areas. In Argentina, its prevalence is estimated at 0.01-0.02%. In half of the patients, it manifests as lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis. Infection results from the agent's inoculation on the skin or mucous membrane by trauma with contaminated plants. There are also cases of zoonotic transmission by contact with animals, such as armadillos, birds, rats, horses, fish, mosquitoes…

Disseminated sporotrichosis presenting as left nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

Sporotrichosis, a subacute or chronic mycosis caused by the Sporothrix schenckii complex, is commonly seen in tropical or subtropical parts of the world, especially in individuals who are in contact with cats or engage in gardening activities. Sporotrichosis generally presents with skin ulceration at the site of inoculation and follows a lymphocutaneous pattern; however, it can present in various confounding ways. Here, we present a case of disseminated sporotrichosis in an immunocompromised patient who did not seem to have any of the commonly associated risk factors and initially presented wi…
