Practical methods to embed culture in dental education.

Background Culture is dynamic and multifaceted, influencing patients' beliefs, behaviours, and experiences of healthcare. In dentistry, a comprehensive understanding of culture, including social determinants, protected characteristics, and lived experience, is essential to avoid stereotyping and promote equitable care. The General Dental Council's Safe practitioner framework (SPF) integrates cultural competence across multiple domains of dental education.Aim To explore how cultural competence (or humility) can be embedded into the UK dental curriculum in alignment with the SPF, and to offer pr…

Age Differences in the Differentiation of Trait Impressions From Faces.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether evidence that older adults (OA) show less differentiation of visual stimuli than younger adults (YA) extends to trait impressions from faces and effects of face age. We also examined whether age differences in mood, vision, or cognition-mediated differentiation differences. Finally, we investigated whether age differences in trait differentiation mediated differences in impression positivity. METHOD: We used a differentiation index adapted from previous work on stereotyping to assess OA and YA likelihood of assigning different faces to different levels on t…

Social dysdecorum following severe traumatic brain injury: loss of implicit social knowledge or loss of control?

The purpose of the present study was to investigate two theoretical frameworks for understanding acquired deficits in social behavior in ind … res. The TBI participants were found to perform normally on the IAT and explicit measures of gender stereotyping but demonstrated executive deficits. Performance on the IAT and executive functions were correlated. Performance in general did not fit well with the implicit social cognition explanation for social dysdecorum following TBI. More evidence was found …

Inadequate analgesia in emergency medicine.

Review of emergency department pain management practices demonstrates pain treatment inconsistency and inadequacy that extends across all de … reporting by providers; and (7) bias and disbelief of pain reporting according to racial and ethnic stereotyping. This article reviews the literature that describes the prevalence and roots of oligoanalgesia in emergency medicine. It also discusses the regulatory efforts to address the problem and their effect on attitudes within the legal community.

[Reverse-tolerance phenomenon in methamphetamine-induced behavioral stereotypy and impairment of cliff avoidance reaction after subchronic methamphetamine administration in rats].

Clinical evidence of methamphetamine (MAP)-induced reverse-tolerance phenomenon is available in studies of methamphetamine psychosis. To exa … pairment may develop after MAP-induced reverse-tolerance phenomenon, as evaluated by the behavioral stereotyping rating scale. In the second experiment, the effect of PCP (1 mg/kg) on CAR was examined in rats pretreated with MAP (4 mg/kg/day) for 30 days. No behavioral stereotypy or CAR impairment was found in these rats for 1 hour after PCP challenge. This sh …

Perceptions of the Current and Desired Brand of Nursing: Magnifying the Voice of Registered Nurses.

INTRODUCTION: Researchers are exploring how branding theory can magnify the voice of registered nurses (RNs). METHODOLOGY: An online survey was distributed to RNs in two Canadian regions to explore beliefs about a nursing brand. RESULTS: Five themes emerged regarding the current brand: confusion, working conditions, personal feelings, nursing stereotypes and caring. Four themes emerged outlining a future brand: leadership, nursing knowledge, caring and contributions to healthcare. CONCLUSION: Nurses are confused about the brand and conflate it with working conditions, stereotypes and person

Issues of choice and control in the behaviour of a pair of captive polar bears (Ursus maritimus).

Stereotyped behaviour occurs in a wide variety of captive animals including ursids. The provision of animal control over aspects of their environment by providing choices is a critical element for improving welfare. The behaviour of two sibling polar bears at a metropolitan zoo was examined to investigate the effect of providing access to their indoor, off-exhibit holding space. Both bears demonstrated behavioural changes when given the choice to access their indoor dens including decreased stereotyped behaviours and increased social play. These results, although based on just two bears, provi

Behavioural effects in rodents of methyl angolensate: a triterpenoid isolated from Entandrophragma angolense.

Behavioral effects of methyl angolensate were investigated in mice and rats. Spontaneous motor activity, pentobarbital sleeping time, amphetamine-stereotyped behaviour, exploratory activity and apomorphine-induced climbing studies in mice were evaluated. The results revealed that methyl angolensate reduced spontaneous motor activity in mice, prolonged the duration of pentobarbital sleeping time in rats and attenuated amphetamine-induced stereotype behaviour in rats. Methyl angolensate also decreased exploratory activity in mice and reduced the rate of apomorphine-induced climbing in mice at th

Disentangling the effects of similarity, familiarity, and liking on social inference strategies.

People constantly make inferences about others' beliefs and preferences. People can draw on various sources of information to make these inferences, including stereotypes, self-knowledge, and target-specific knowledge. What leads people to use each of these sources of information over others? The current study examined factors that influence the use of these sources of information, focusing on three interpersonal dimensions - the extent to which people feel (a) familiar with, (b) similar to, or (c) like the target. In four studies (total N = 1136), participants inferred the beliefs and prefere

The target as an obstacle: Grasping an object at different heights.

Humans use a stereotypical movement pattern to grasp a target object. What is the cause of this stereotypical pattern? One of the possible factors is that the target object is considered an obstacle at positions other than the envisioned goal positions for the digits: while each digit aims for a goal position on the target object, they avoid other positions on the target object even if these positions do not obstruct the movement. According to this hypothesis, the maximum grip aperture will be higher if the risk of colliding with the target object is larger. Based on this hypothesis, we made a

The song must go on: resilience of the songbird vocal motor pathway.

Stereotyped sequences of neural activity underlie learned vocal behavior in songbirds; principle neurons in the cortical motor nucleus HVC fire in stereotyped sequences with millisecond precision across multiple renditions of a song. The geometry of neural connections underlying these sequences is not known in detail though feed-forward chains are commonly assumed in theoretical models of sequential neural activity. In songbirds, a well-defined cortical-thalamic motor circuit exists but little is known the fine-grain structure of connections within each song nucleus. To examine whether the str

The Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01) in community-based adults with intellectual disabilities: reliability and concurrent validity vis-à-vis the Inventory for Client and Agency Planning (ICAP).

Reliability and concurrent validity of the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01; Rojahn et al., 2001) was examined in a sample of 130 community residing adults with mild to profound intellectual disabilities with high rates of behavior problems and concurrent mental health problems. The BPI-01 and the Inventory for Client and Agency Planning (ICAP; Bruininks et al., 1986) were administered twice within a mean time interval of 7.8 weeks by 20 trained and experienced staff members. All three BPI-01 subscales had high inter-rater agreement (Self-Injurious Behavior [SIB]: mean ICC=.84; Stereotyped

Characteristics of early rhythmic behaviors in children at risk for developmental disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal stereotyped behaviors are a significant problem for many individuals with mental retardation or mental illness. To increase understanding of the development of abnormal stereotyped behaviors, the authors investigated the early rhythmic behaviors of children at increased risk for developmental delays. METHOD: Rhythmic behaviors in 13-month-old children born prematurely and in children born at term were coded from laboratory videotapes of structured interaction segments. RESULTS: While few differences in early rhythmic behaviors were found between children born prematurely

Behavioral effects mediated by the modulatory glycine site of the NMDA receptor in the anterodorsal striatum and nucleus accumbens.

The striatum and the nucleus accumbens are the main input structures of the basal ganglia (BG). They contribute differently to motor behavior controlled by the BG in rats, e.g., stereo-typed behavior, catalepsy, and locomotion. Whereas the striatum is predominantly involved in the control of sniffing behavior and catalepsy, the nucleus accumbens contributes to control of locomotion. To test whether the allosteric glycine site of the NMDA receptor complex modulates these behavioral variables, we injected the glycine-site antagonist 7-chlorokynurenate and the glycine-site agonist D-serine into t

Restricted and Repetitive Behavior and Brain Functional Connectivity in Infants at Risk for Developing Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs), detectable by 12 months in many infants in whom autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is later diagnosed, may represent some of the earliest behavioral markers of ASD. However, brain function underlying the emergence of these key behaviors remains unknown. METHODS: Behavioral and resting-state functional connectivity (fc) magnetic resonance imaging data were collected from 167 children at high and low familial risk for ASD at 12 and 24 months (n = 38 at both time points). Twenty infants met criteria for ASD at 24 months. We divided RRBs into fo
