Acute kidney injury is associated with increased mortality in dogs with gastric dilatation and volvulus.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in dogs with gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV), identify risk factors associated with AKI diagnosed at presentation or that developed in hospital, and evaluate the association between AKI and selected nonrenal risk factors and mortality before discharge. METHODS: Medical records of 106 dogs that underwent surgical correction of GDV between January 2013 and September 2023 were retrospectively reviewed. Dogs were categorized as presenting with or developing AKI in hospital, according to International Renal Interest Society c

Gastric volvulus: unraveling the diagnosis with MPRs.

Gastric volvulus is a rare entity with a spectrum of acute and chronic clinical presentations. Body radiologists must be cognizant of the subtypes of gastric volvulus and identify potential complications. Mortality can be high if unrecognized from gastric necrosis, perforation, and sepsis. CT with multiplanar reformations is critical for complete evaluation beyond radiography and fluoroscopy. This article reviews clinical and imaging features of uncomplicated and complicated gastric volvulus, with the aim of guiding appropriate management.

Evaluation of gastric motility in nine dogs before and after prophylactic laparoscopic gastropexy: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a prophylactic laparoscopic gastropexy on gastric motility in healthy large-breed dogs. METHODS: This was a prospective pilot study with nine healthy client-owned dogs. Each dog was its own control. Gastric motility was evaluated before and after laparoscopic gastropexy. Dogs were fed a standard diet three weeks before and after surgery. Gastric motility was measured before and 3 weeks after surgery. A wireless motility capsule (WMC) was used to measure gastric pH, intragastric pressure, temperature, frequency of contractions

Concentration of Potassium in Plasma, Erythrocytes, and Muscle Tissue in Cows with Decreased Feed Intake and Gastrointestinal Ileus.

BACKGROUND: Healthy cows consume large amounts of potassium and a sudden loss in appetite can lead to hypokalemia. The routine method to evaluate potassium homeostasis is the measurement of the extracellular potassium in plasma or serum, but this does not provide information about the intracellular potassium pool. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To evaluate potassium homeostasis by comparing the extracellular and intracellular potassium concentration in cows with reduced feed intake and gastrointestinal ileus. ANIMALS: Twenty cows 1-3 days postpartum (group 1) and 20 cows with gastrointestinal ileus

Uncommon cause of retrosternal pain.

We present the case of a 54-year old male patient who was admitted with severe acute epigastric pain, vomiting, and inability to eat since three days before admission. After having excluded cardiac and pulmonary emergencies, an oesogastroduodenoscopy was planned and showed a gastric volvulus. The patient was treated surgically allowing gastric decompression, gastropexy and Nissen intervention. We discuss the case and describe the classification, the diagnosis, the etiologies and therapeutic options in acute and chronic gastric volvulus.

Hiatal hernia with upside-down stomach. Management of acute incarceration: case presentation and review of literature.

Upside-down stomach (UDS) represents the rarest type of hiatal hernia (<5%) and is characterized by herniation of the entire stomach or most gastric portions into the posterior mediastinum. We present here a very rare complication of such a condition which is incarceration of upside-down stomach. A 54 year-old female was admitted to the emergency department presenting signs of acute epigastric pain radiating into thorax. Computed tomography revealed a giant hiatal hernia with incarceration of the gastric trunk. Immediate operation for reduction of the incarcerated stomach and repair of the hia

Gastric heterotopia with extensive involvement of the small intestine associated with congenital short bowel syndrome and intestinal malrotation.

We present a case of extensive gastric heterotopia involving the small intestine associated with congenital short bowel syndrome and malrotation. The infant showed a normal mesenteric artery, without signs of "apple peel" deformity. Gastric heterotopia extended from the duodenum to the mid-ileum involving the short bowel. Gastric mucosa heterotopia may involve any segment of the gastrointestinal tract. It can be associated with pancreatic heterotopia and Meckel diverticulum. However, our case showed involvement of two-thirds of the small intestine without pancreatic heterotopia. To our knowled

[CT diagnosis of acute gastric volvulus].

Acute gastric volvulus is an infrequent entity. Management is surgical. Diagnosis frequently is delayed because of the non-specific nature of presenting symptoms. The authors report a case of acute gastric volvulus diagnosed by computed tomography in a 92 year old woman that was confirmed at surgery. The pathophysiology, classification and different presentations of this entity are briefly reviewed. CT findings suggesting gastric volvulus are reviewed as well.

Influence of thoracic conformation and genetics on the risk of gastric dilatation-volvulus in Irish setters.

Body measurements, history of gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), and other data were obtained for 155 Irish setters at the 1994 National Specialty Show. The dogs ranged in age from 6.5 months to 12.4 years (mean+/-standard deviation [SD], 3.6+/-2.6 years); 11 (7%) of the dogs had histories of GDV. Gastric dilatation-volvulus risk increased 33% for each year of age (p of 0.01). Dogs with the deepest thorax relative to width (ratio range, 1.61 to 1.85) had a significantly greater GDV risk than those with the shallowest thorax (ratio range, 1.20 to 1.50); the odds ratio was 8.45; the 95% confiden

Gastric volvulus: more common than previously thought?

Over a four year period, from August 1987 to July 1991, thirteen cases of chronic and recurrent gastric volvulus were encountered comprising six paediatric and seven adult patients. In none of the patients was the condition clinically suspected; diagnosis being made only at meticulous upper gastro-intestinal (UGI) barium series. The paediatric patients typically presented with obstructive symptoms of projectile vomiting especially after meals and failure to thrive. The adults had variable symptoms of dyspepsia, recurrent intermittent upper abdominal discomfort or pain, occasionally accompanied

Gastrostomy without laparotomy--a percutaneous endoscopic technique: review of 35 cases.

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) was performed in 33 patient with head injury, one with laryngeal cancer, and one with gastric volvulus. The gastrostomy tube was prepared from 20 F Foley catheter and a plastic micropipette tip. The complications encountered included peritubal leak in three patients (9%) and abdominal wall hematoma in one patient (3%). There was no procedure-related mortality. We recommend PEG for tube enteral feeding in patients who have lost the swallowing reflex.

Death due to late-presenting congenital diaphragmatic hernia in a 2-year-old child.

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is classically regarded as a neonatal defect presenting with respiratory distress; however, not all CDH will present in this manner. Unlike newborn deaths related to CDH, where the mechanism of death is respiratory in nature, the mechanism of death in late-presenting CDH is not always due to respiratory compromise. In this case report, we present a death occurring in a 2 1/2-year-old child who presented to the emergency department with complaints of abdominal pain and emesis, and then rapidly decompensated and died. Autopsy revealed a CDH, with herniation
