Transmission of Streptococcus pneumoniae between children and their parents was evaluated in 29 pairs from 25 families. The serotypes of 35 pneumococcal isolates from 18 (62.1%) of 29 child-parent pairs were identical. Of the 35 isolates, 23 showed intermediate resistance and 10 were fully resistant to penicillin G. PCR indicated that all 35 strains had at least one alteration in penicillin-binding protein genes pbp1a, pbp2x, and pbp2b and 33 strains had macrolide resistance genes mef(A) and/or erm(B). The in-vitro activities of two glycylcyclines, DMG-MINO and DMG-DMDOT, and several comparative agents were determined against 263 enterococci, 102 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and 55 Streptococcus pneumoniae recent clinical isolates. The glycylcyclines and teicoplanin were the most active agents against the enterococcal isolates. All methicillin-resistant S. aureus were susceptible to the glycylcyclines. Acute cervical adenitis is a frequent problem in pediatrics. It is occasionally followed by acute postinfectious glomerulonephritis, which has a well-defined set of clinical and histological manifestations. We present two rare cases of acute postinfectious glomerulonephritis, one associated with Streptococcus pneumoniae and the second with cat-scratch disease. Cultures of material from the lymph nodes yielded S. pneumoniae type 15 in case 1. A pleomorphic gram-negative micro-organism, identified by silver stain as cat-scratch bacillus, was found in case 2.

The relationship between tympanic membrane temperature and acute purulent otitis media was investigated using thermistor probes to measure surface temperature of the tympanic membrane in chinchillas with experimental unilateral otitis media due to Streptococcus pneumoniae. Sedated animals were kept on a thermally insulated surface during the procedure to avoid hypothermia. Although the animals' core temperature rose during middle ear infection, direct measurement of tympanic membrane temperature did not show a significant difference between the infected and uninfected contralateral ears.
