Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients with comorbid panic disorder (PD) may express additive symptoms of central fear system disturbance. They endorse elevated levels of sleep and nightmare disturbance [Leskin GA, et al., J Psychiatr Res 2002;36:449-452], and demonstrate movement suppression during laboratory sleep [Woodward SH, et al., Sleep 2002;25:681-688]. We estimated respiratory rate and rate variability separately for rapid-eye movement (REM) and non-rapid-eye movement (NREM) sleep. Subjects were 49 Vietnam combat-related PTSD inpatients (11 with comorbid PD and 38 without) and

OBJECTIVES: To identify childhood antecedents for lifetime post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and to determine how this diagnosis relates to health and service use among extremely poor women.
METHODS: We conducted a secondary data analysis of 425 women in the Worcester Family Research Project, a case-control longitudinal study of 220 sheltered homeless and 216 extremely poor housed (never homeless) women in Worcester, Massachusetts.
RESULTS: We found that extremely poor women with lifetime PTSD were more likely to have grown up in family environments of violence, threat, and anger than th

BACKGROUND: Family studies of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have given inconsistent results to date. Identifying predisposing factors in PTSD compared to anxiety disorders may help to clarify the classification of PTSD as a diagnostic entity.
METHOD: Retrospective case note study of 87 PTSD patients who participated in an RCT, and 51 PTSD patients and 87 agoraphobics treated routinely in outpatients.
RESULTS: Compared to agoraphobics, PTSD patients had significantly less family history of anxiety disorder but not mental illness in general. They also had significantly less personal hi

A prospective study documenting psychopathology was undertaken in 48 subjects exposed to a range of physical trauma, but whose injuries were of similar severity. No support was found for the DSM-III-R view correlating the severity of the stressor with the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Distress post injury (high scores on the impact of event scale), indicative of difficulty with cognitive assimilation of the traumatic event, was found to be highly predictive of psychiatric morbidity and PTSD at 6 months.

Data are presented from clinical interviews and psychological tests of a helicopter pilot who had survived a helicopter crash. Within a week, the pilot developed severe stress reactions after the crash, dominated by guilt feelings, nightmares and fear of not being able to fly. Helicopter-accident training simulating a helicopter crashing into the water was used as part of the treatment. The therapeutic value and limitations of this type of treatment are discussed. The main benefit seemed to be the extinction of traumatic helplessness and the reestablishment of a positive response-outcome expec

BACKGROUND: Here we report the reliability and test/re-test validity of a Castillan version of the PCL-5 (PCL5-C) in mental health nurses.
METHODS: A sample of 52 consecutive nurses was recruited from two psychiatric hospitals and four psychiatrists units of general hospitals in Madrid, Spain.
RESULTS: We detected high internal consistency for the study questionnaire at the test assessment (n = 52) and at retest 0.929 and 0.935, respectively, by total Cronbach's α. All of the items at test and re-test correlated with the total score.
CONCLUSIONS: Reproducibility analysis showed excellent te

Although post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been associated with worse cognitive outcomes after mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), its impact has not been evaluated after more severe TBI. This study aimed to determine whether PTSD symptoms are related to cognition after complicated mild, moderate, severe, and penetrating TBI. Service members (n = 137) with a history of complicated mild/moderate TBI (n = 64) or severe/penetrating TBI (n = 73) were prospectively enrolled from United States Military Treatment Facilities. Participants completed a neuropsychological assessment one year or mo

Racial discrimination in educational settings remains a significant barrier to equitable learning environments and is toxic for the mental health of Black youth in Canada. This study employed a mixed-methods multi-study approach to document the rates, dynamics, and mental health impacts of racial discrimination in education experienced by Black youths aged 14 to 24. Quantitative data were collected from two large samples (N = 558 and N = 914) to measure racial discrimination in education, stress, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Additionally, qualitative data fro

BACKGROUND: Stressful life events are events that do not fulfil the A criterion of PTSD in the DSM-5(TR) but are perceived as negative by the person. There is an ongoing debate about the usefulness of the A criterion as a gate criterion for PTSD, and especially regarding which events qualify as traumatic or stressful life events. This debate is particularly important for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) or borderline intellectual functioning (BIF), as they seem to be more likely to experience traumatic and stressful life events than their peers without ID-BIF and appear to be mo

OBJECTIVE: Post-traumatic stress disorder is a complex psychiatric disorder that develops after exposure to traumatic events, such as violent physical assaults, accidents, rape, natural disasters, and conflicts, stranger than usual human experiences. The typical presentation of intrusive thoughts, the persistence of the trauma, the avoidance of pertinent stimuli, emotional numbness, and physiological hyperarousal are the characteristics of this anxiety symptom. Despite the presence of a study conducted on this problem, the pooled effect, particularly in Ethiopia, is not known; therefore, this

OBJECTIVES: Maternal alcohol misuse during the postpartum period is associated with negative maternal and infant outcomes. This study examined whether greater stress exposure in the year before the baby's birth and maternal post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were associated with postpartum alcohol misuse among a sample of women veterans. Maternal PTSD was also examined as a moderator of the association between stress exposure and postpartum alcohol misuse.
METHODS: Data were drawn from the Center for Maternal and Infant Outcomes Research in Translation study, a multisite prospective cohort

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disabling condition affecting a large segment of the population; however, current treatment options have limitations. New interventions that target the neurobiological alterations underlying symptoms of PTSD could be highly beneficial. Transcutaneous cervical (neck) vagal nerve stimulation (tcVNS) has the potential to represent such an intervention. The goal of this study was to determine the effects of tcVNS on neural responses to reminders of traumatic stress in PTSD.
METHODS: Twenty-two participants were randomized to receive either sham

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops in individuals after exposure to severe, life-threatening traumatic event. Etazolate is a selective phosphodiesterase IV inhibitor that is highly specific for cAMP, which has anxiolytic and antidepressant effects. We have previously shown that PTSD induced-memory impairment, anxiety and depression were prevented via the administration of etazolate. In the current study, the effect of etazolate on oxidative stress parameters, BDNF, and histone acetylation in the hippocampus were evaluated in a rat model of PTSD. The PTSD was induced by single prolo

Acute responses to intense stressors can give rise to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD diagnostic criteria include trauma exposure history and self-reported symptoms. Individuals who meet PTSD diagnostic criteria often meet criteria for additional psychiatric diagnoses. Biomarkers promise to contribute to reliable phenotypes of PTSD and comorbidities by linking biological system alterations to behavioral symptoms. Here we have analyzed unbiased plasma metabolomics and other stress effects in a mouse model with behavioral features of PTSD. In this model, C57BL/6 mice are repeatedly e

BACKGROUND: Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) survivors can develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which is associated with worse clinical outcomes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and predictors of PTSD in a large sample of SCA survivors. Prior history of psychological trauma and the effects of repeated trauma exposure on subsequent PTSD and symptom severity after SCA were also explored.
METHODS: A retrospective, cross-sectional study of 188 SCA survivors from the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association patient registry completed an online questionnaire that included measu

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a multifaceted psychiatric disorder arising from exposure to traumatic events, characterized by intrusion symptoms, avoidance behaviors, heightened arousal, and negative cognitive and mood alterations. Military personnel are particularly vulnerable to PTSD because of frequent exposure to life-threatening situations during deployments. In France, studies have reported PTSD prevalence rates of 1.7% and 4.8% among military personnel. Early detection and intervention through regular psychological assessments are essential, as chronic PTSD offe

BACKGROUND: Trauma exposure can cause post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), and persistently experiencing PTSS may lead to the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research has shown that PTSS that emerged within days of trauma was a robust predictor of PTSD development.
AIMS: To investigate patterns of early stress responses to trauma and their associations with development of PTSD.
METHOD: We recruited 247 civilian trauma survivors from a local hospital emergency department. The PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) and Acute Stress Disorder Scale (ASDS) were completed within

BACKGROUND: Pre-term or full-term childbirth can be experienced as physically or psychologically traumatic. Cumulative and trans-generational effects of traumatic stress on both psychological and physical health indicate the ethical requirement to investigate appropriate preventative treatment for stress symptoms in women following a routine traumatic experience such as childbirth.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review was to investigate the effectiveness of early psychological interventions in reducing or preventing post-traumatic stress symptoms and post-traumatic stress disorder in post-

Treating patient populations with significant psychiatric and neurocognitive symptomatology can present a unique clinical dilemma: progress in psychotherapy can be significantly fettered by cognitive deficits, whereas neurocognitive rehabilitation efforts can be ineffective because of psychiatric overlay. Application of mindfulness-based interventions to address either cognitive or psychiatric symptoms in isolation appears efficacious in many contexts; however, it remains unclear whether this type of intervention might help address simultaneous neurocognitive and psychiatric symptomatology.
