Comparative evaluation of nurse-led versus traditional trauma services in plastic surgery: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Traditional trauma care often experiences significant delays in surgical readiness due to fragmented coordination between surgical and nursing teams. Nurse-Led Trauma Services (NLTS) have emerged as a collaborative alternative to optimize clinical efficiency. This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of an NLTS model compared to Traditional Trauma Services (TTS) in an emergency plastic surgery department. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed 248 patients (NLTS: n = 107; TTS: n = 141) admitted to a tertiary emergency center in China for plastic surgical intervention

Cannabis and Wound Healing: A Narrative Review of Current Evidence and Applications to Facial Plastic Surgery.

Cannabis use has increased substantially in the United States, driven by broader legalization, decriminalization, and expanding medical and recreational availability. For facial plastic surgeons, the clinical implications remain difficult to define because "cannabis use" encompasses heterogeneous products and routes, including smoked flower, vaping, concentrates, edibles, pharmaceutical cannabinoids, topical cannabidiol (CBD), and frequent co-use with tobacco or nicotine. Current evidence suggests that systemic cannabis use, particularly inhaled or heavy perioperative use, may be associated wi

Mucogingival loss secondary to oral tuberculosis and its management using periodontal plastic surgery: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is widely recognized for its pulmonary manifestations; however, the oral cavity may serve as an early and overlooked site of disease. Although the tongue is the most affected region, gingival involvement is not rare and may cause severe mucogingival destruction. The nonspecific nature of these lesions frequently leads to diagnostic delay. METHODS: A 25-year-old female presented with a persistent gingival ulcer in the maxillary anterior region associated with progressive recession and soft-tissue loss. Histopathologic examination demonstrated necrotizing granulomatous

Spindle Cell Lipoma in the Lower Lip: A Report of a Rare Case in Plastic Surgery.

Spindle cell lipoma (SCL) is a rare subtype of lipoma. SCL is commonly reported in subcutaneous tissues of the neck, shoulders, and back, but its occurrence in the lip, where adipose tissue is sparse, is rare. We present a case of SCL in a 53-year-old woman referred to our plastic surgery department with a chief complaint of a submucosal mass in the right lower lip. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a mass in the submucosal tissue of the lower lip. Surgical excision was performed through a lip incision. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of SCL with the presence of C

Type IV Hypersensitivity Reaction to Dermabond Prineo in Plastic Surgery Patients: A Report of 4 Cases.

Dermabond Prineo, a 2-octyl cyanoacrylate-based skin closure system, is widely used in surgical procedures, but reports of adverse effects remain limited. This study aimed to report and analyze 4 cases of type IV hypersensitivity reactions to Dermabond in plastic surgery patients. The study was conducted in a private hospital in Cali, Colombia, between 2022 and 2024. Four patients who underwent reconstructive surgery and presented type IV hypersensitivity reaction after the use of Dermabond were included. Variables such as time of onset of symptoms, number of Dermabond applications, and postop

Knowing that Someone Had Facial Plastic Surgery Does Not Modify Perceptions of Attractiveness or Social Attributes.

BACKGROUND: Attractive individuals receive higher ratings on independent social attributes including intelligence, success, and likability. The authors sought to determine whether knowledge that a person in a photograph had facial plastic surgery affects perceptions of attractiveness or social attributes. METHODS: US adults were recruited to complete an online survey (Qualtrics respondent distribution system). Demographic information, a cosmetic surgery questionnaire, and a body dysmorphic disorder screening questionnaire were collected. Participants viewed photographs of young, White, male-

Reducing in-hospital complications in older patients undergoing plastic surgery through a collaborative model of care.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence to support collaborative care and proactive comprehensive geriatric assessment and management in a number of surgical specialties. Data are lacking in older people under the care of plastic surgeons. This before/after study evaluates the impact of the introduction of a shared care model between geriatric medicine and plastic surgery in an Australian metropolitan teaching hospital. METHODS: A shared care model was implemented for all patients aged 75 years and older admitted electively and emergently under the plastic surgery team with patients admitted

Evaluation of Facial Trauma Scars After Treating by Refining Plastic Surgery Techniques: A Follow-Up Study.

BACKGROUND: Although early debridement and refining plastic surgery techniques have been shown to be effective in the treatment of facial scars after trauma, their postoperative outcomes have not been quantitatively evaluated by the relevant Scar Cosmesis Assessment and Rating (SCAR) Scale. This study was designed to provide a fair assessment of the appearance and local symptoms of scars after treatment by refining plastic surgery techniques and to share the operational skills of surgical repairs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients who received refining plastic surgery techniques were followed up

Does the participation of a senior plastic surgeon improve conditions of hospitalisation in craniosynostosis repair surgery?

INTRODUCTION: The real impact of the participation of other surgical specialties together with neurosurgeons on perioperative care in craniosynostosis repair surgery has not been determined. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the participation of a second senior surgeon (plastic surgeon) during surgical repair of pediatric monosutural craniosynostosis improved perioperative medical care. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed 2 cohorts of patients who had consecutively undergone primary repair surgery for trigonocephaly and unicoronal craniosynostosis. Infa

The use of local anaesthetics in dermatology, aesthetic medicine and plastic surgery: review of the literature.

The aim of the study is to present the latest information on local anaesthesia in plastic surgery, aesthetic medicine and dermatology based on the available literature. The aim of the work is to present a model of cooperation between an anaesthesiologist, dermatologist, and surgeon, so that the patients feel safe, and, above all, the procedure will be comfortable and painless for them. Regional blocks are an excellent tool to achieve this goal. Achieving this requires commitment and understanding by both the plastic surgeon and the anaesthesiologist.

[Revascularization Prior to Defect Reconstruction of the Lower Limb - Essential Cooperation between Plastic and Vascular Surgery].

Treatment of complex ischemic lower leg defects with exposure of deep anatomic structures represents a considerable challenge to involved specialties. In selected patients, limb salvage can be achieved as an alternative to major amputation by means of a combined approach including arterial reconstruction and subsequent free flap transfer. Arterial reconstruction can be performed either by endovascular or open surgical treatment (bypass reconstruction or implantation of an arteriovenous loop) preliminary to defect reconstruction using microsurgical free flap transplantation. Whereas the aim of

[Avoidance of complications in oncological surgery of the pelvic region : combined oncosurgical and plastic reconstruction measures].

Prevention of perioperative and postoperative complications resulting from surgical oncology in the pelvic region remains a major interdisciplinary challenge. With modern interdisciplinary concepts joining forces of various surgical specialties, tumor resection can be sufficiently carried out with wide margins and the patients benefit from reduced morbidity even in complex situations. As an example chronic fistulation and secretion from the presacral cavity and sinus may result as potential sequelae from intra-abdominal and intrapelvic tumor resection, especially when neoadjuvant multimodal th

The impact of perioperative hypothermia on plastic surgery outcomes: a multivariate logistic regression of 1062 cases.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative hypothermia has been associated with increased rates of infection, prolonged recovery time, and coagulopathy. OBJECTIVES: The authors assessed the impact of hypothermia on patient outcomes after plastic surgery and analyzed the impact of prewarming on postoperative outcomes. METHODS: The medical charts of 1062 patients who underwent complex plastic surgery typically lasting at least 1 hour were reviewed. Hypothermia was defined as a temperature at or below 36°C. Postoperative complication data were collected for outcomes including infection, delayed wound healing, s

Identification of Best Practices for Resident Aesthetic Clinics in Plastic Surgery Training: The ACAPS National Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Resident aesthetic clinics (RACs) have demonstrated good outcomes and acceptable patient satisfaction, but few studies have evaluated their educational, financial, or medicolegal components. We sought to determine RAC best practices. METHODS: We surveyed American Council of Academic Plastic Surgeon members (n = 399), focusing on operational details, resident supervision, patient safety, medicolegal history, financial viability, and research opportunities. Of the 96 respondents, 63 reported having a RAC, and 56% of plastic surgery residency program directors responded. RESULTS:

L-PRP/L-PRF in esthetic plastic surgery, regenerative medicine of the skin and chronic wounds.

The use of platelet concentrates for topical use is of particular interest for the promotion of skin wound healing. Fibrin-based surgical adjuvants are indeed widely used in plastic surgery since many years in order to improve scar healing and wound closure. However, the addition of platelets and their associated growth factors opened a new range of possibilities, particularly for the treatment of chronic skin ulcers and other applications of regenerative medicine on the covering tissues. In the 4 families of platelet concentrates available, 2 families were particularly used and tested in this
