The BEACON study: protocol for a cohort study as part of an evaluation of the effectiveness of smartphone-assisted problem-solving therapy in men who present with intentional self-harm to emergency departments in Ontario.

BACKGROUND: Patients who present to emergency departments after intentional self-harm are at an increased risk of dying by suicide. This applies particularly to men, who represent nearly two-thirds of those who die by suicide in Ontario. One way of potentially addressing this gap is to offer a course of blended problem-solving therapy, comprised of a brief course of evidence-based psychotherapy for individuals at risk for suicide, facilitated by the use of a patient-facing smartphone application and a clinician-facing "dashboard." This approach has the potential to combine the benefits of face

Feasibility Study of a Novel App-Based Anxiety Intervention for Autistic People.

At least 50% of autistic people experience clinically relevant anxiety symptoms. However, reasons for elevated rates of anxiety in autism remain poorly understood and there is a high unmet need for novel and adapted therapies for anxiety that are accessible to autistic people. This study aimed to establish the feasibility of a novel app-based anxiety management tool ("Molehill Mountain") that has been developed with, and adapted for, autistic people. A single-centre, single-arm feasibility study design was employed, whereby autistic people (≥ 16 years) with mild-to-severe symptoms of anxiety w

Anxiety predicts anticipatory emotional states, whereas fear predicts immediate responses: psychophysiological evidence from a virtual reality study.

Fear and anxiety differ in their causes and psychophysiological responses to acute stress. While anxiety occurs before the threat, fear is activated in the immediate presence of the threat. In this study, virtual reality was used to induce fear of heights, corresponding to the defensive behavior of freezing. In a sample of 98 participants, a freezing response was successfully induced and tracked using both subjective indicators of stress and electrodermal activity (EDA). Additionally, the Stress Silhouette test was used to identify areas of muscular tension in the body; the Questionnaire of Ap

Anxiety, heart rate and their interrelation at mental stress in school children.

Heart rate (HR) was measured in 63 ten year old boys during psychic stress induced by dental examination and the reading of a difficult test before a public. By means of the CMAS questionnaire, a teacher's questionnaire, rating of manifestations during the examination and selfcomparison by the children, we tried to assess the level of their anxiety. We looked for correlations between the individual measures of this personality trait and between anxiety and autonomic (HR) reactivity. From the aspect of HR the whole experiment appeared as a uniform, ever increasing stress, including socalled res

Anxiety and depression after pregnancy-related cerebral venous sinus thrombosis: associations with functional disability at discharge.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) during pregnancy and the puerperium is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition. While neurological and functional outcomes have been increasingly studied, the burden of anxiety and depression after CVST in pregnant and postpartum women remains poorly characterized. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of pregnant and postpartum women diagnosed with CVST at a tertiary referral center. Anxiety and depression were assessed at 3 months after CVST using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) and the 24-item Hamilton Depr

Prevalence of Anxiety, Depressive Symptoms, and Substance Use in Schizophrenia.

Background: Schizophrenia is a chronic and debilitating psychiatric disorder often accompanied by comorbid conditions, notably anxiety, depressive symptoms, and substance use disorders. These comorbidities further complicate the clinical profile, reduce treatment compliance, and worsen prognosis, particularly in first-episode schizophrenia, which is less discussed in the Indian context. While extensive research exists globally, data from the Indian context, particularly on early-phase schizophrenia, remain sparse. Methods:This cross-sectional observational study was conducted over 18 months (N

Comparing Pharmacological and Nonpharmacological Interventions for Alleviating Preoperative Anxiety in Pediatric Surgical Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial in Pakistan.

Introduction Preoperative anxiety can prolong the induction of anesthesia and postoperative recovery, increase the risk of postoperative delirium, increase pain, and increase analgesic use. Pharmacological interventions are associated with increased cost to the hospital, potential surgical delay while waiting for the medication to take effect, and delayed discharge from the recovery room, while nonpharmacological modalities, including electronic gadgets, are cost-effective, noninvasive, and carry a low risk for adverse effects. This study aimed to compare pharmacological and nonpharmacological

Psychometric properties of the emotional processing scale in individuals with psychiatric symptoms and the development of a brief 15-item version.

The 25-item Emotional Processing Scale (EPS) can be used with clinical populations, but there is little research on its psychometric properties (factor structure, test-retest reliability, and validity) in individuals with psychiatric symptoms. We administered the EPS-25 to a large sample of people (N = 512) with elevated psychiatric symptoms. We used confirmatory factor analysis to evaluate three a priori models from previous research and then evaluated discriminant and convergent validity against measures of alexithymia (Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20), depressive symptoms (Patient Health Quest
