Molecular detection of Ehrlichia ruminantium in ticks from ruminants during the 2021 Rift Valley fever outbreak in Mananjary, Madagascar.

Ehrlichia ruminantium, the causative agent of heartwater, is a tick-borne pathogen affecting livestock in Africa and the Caribbean. This disease is transmitted primarily by Amblyomma variegatum ticks and poses a significant threat to animal health. In Madagascar, the prevalence of E. ruminantium remains poorly documented. During a Rift Valley fever (RVF) outbreak in Mananjary, Madagascar (April-May 2021), we conducted a field study to assess the circulation of vector-borne pathogens in ticks collected from ruminants. Ticks were morphologically identified, and DNA was extracted for quantitative

Rickettsia rickettsii Co-feeding Transmission among Amblyomma aureolatum Ticks.

Amblyomma aureolatum ticks are vectors of Rickettsia rickettsii, the etiologic agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in Brazil. Maintenance of R. rickettsii in nature depends on horizontal transmission along tick generations. Although such transmission is known to occur when uninfected and infected ticks feed simultaneously on susceptible animals (co-feeding systemic transmission), we investigated co-feeding nonsystemic transmission, which was based on R. rickettsii-infected and -uninfected A. aureolatum ticks feeding simultaneously on guinea pigs immune to R. rickettsii. Our acquisition and t

Antibodies against tick-borne pathogens in domestic dogs in Norway: Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, tick-borne encephalitis virus, and Anaplasma phagocytophilum.

BACKGROUND: Ticks are important vectors of zoonotic pathogens, posing a growing threat to animals and humans in Europe. In Norway, the tick species Ixodes ricinus is expanding its range, increasing the risk of tick-borne infections. This study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of IgG antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s. l.), tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in domestic dogs residing in Norway, and to assess their potential role as sentinel species for tick-borne pathogen surveillance at the northernmost limit of I. ricinus' geographical r

Species diversity of tick and tick-borne pathogens from roe deer (Capreolus pygargus tianschanicus), including new record of Haemaphysalis megaspinosa (Acari: Ixodidae), in Jeju Island, Republic of Korea.

Hard ticks (Ixodidae family) are primary vectors of zoonotic diseases, including severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTSV), anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Lyme borreliosis, and ehrlichiosis. The roe deer (Capreolus pygargus tianschanicus), a key host for tick-borne diseases, is widely distributed on Jeju Island, Republic of Korea (ROK). Although the increased interactions between deer, livestock, and humans have raised concerns about zoonotic disease transmission, this area has remained understudied. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the species diversity of ticks infesting roe d

A review of reverse vaccinology approaches for the development of vaccines against ticks and tick borne diseases.

The field of reverse vaccinology developed as an outcome of the genome sequence revolution. Following the introduction of live vaccinations in the western world by Edward Jenner in 1798 and the coining of the phrase 'vaccine', in 1881 Pasteur developed a rational design for vaccines. Pasteur proposed that in order to make a vaccine that one should 'isolate, inactivate and inject the microorganism' and these basic rules of vaccinology were largely followed for the next 100 years leading to the elimination of several highly infectious diseases. However, new technologies were needed to conquer ma

Molecular detection and phylogenetic analysis of Anaplasma bovis from Haemaphysalis longicornis feeding on grazing cattle in Korea.

Ticks are vectors of various pathogens that affect humans and animals throughout the world. Anaplasma bovis is one of the most important tick-borne pathogens that cause cattle diseases but there is still very little information available about this agent in Korea. In the present study, 535 Haemaphysalis longicornis tick pools were analyzed from grazing cattle in five Korean provinces. A. bovis was detected in 50 (9.3%) of 535 tick pools using 16S rRNA-based PCR. A. bovis infections were detected for the first time in ticks feeding on cattle in Chungbuk, Geongbuk, and Jeonbuk provinces in Korea

Temporal distribution of Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus and Haemaphysalis concinna in Hungary.

A survey was carried out over a 4-year period to describe the temporal distribution of three 'anthropophilic' tick species, Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus and Haemaphysalis concinna in Hungary. Altogether 4658 adult ticks belonging to the three species were collected from 1931 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) killed in an area of about 70,000 km(2) representing all major climatic areas of the country. The seasonal activity of the three species was different. I. ricinus ticks were most active between April and June with an activity peak in May. A less marked increase of activity was also obse

[Hibernal parasitism by Ixodes ricinus (L., 1758) of Felis catus domesticus in an urbanized area].

In the first months of 1977 some adults of Ixodes ricinus (L., 1758) have been found on Felis catus domesticus in a newly urbanized area near Rieti (Lazio, Central Italy) which had been previously used as a grazing-ground for sheep. This finding, quite exceptional according to the literature, is explained in the following way: 1) the cat had not been recorded until now as an habitual host of any Ixodid species, but many species of this superfamily can infest the cat in absence of their habitual hosts; 2) in a continental temperature climate, in peculiar microhabitats and in presence of hosts,

Ricettsioses studies. 2. Natural foci of rickettsioses in east Slovakia.

Natural foci of Q fever and of spotted fever group rickettsiae in the Kosice district of east Slovakia are described and discussed. It was established that the natural focus of Q fever was a secondary one. Cattle were observed to be the main source of human infection and a high proportion of synanthropic rodents was found to be infested with Coxiella burnetii. The natural focus of spotted fever group rickettsiae was shown to be of a primary character, such rickettsiae circulating among ticks and small mammals. It is suggested that natural foci of spotted fever group rickettsiae in east Slovaki

Identification and characterization of vaccine candidates against Hyalomma anatolicum-Vector of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick borne viral disease reported from different parts of the world. The distribution of the CCHF cases are linked with the distribution of the principal vector, Hyalomma anatolicum in the ecosystem. Presently, vector control is mainly dependent on repeated application of acaricides, results in partial efficacy and generated acaricide resistant tick strains. Amongst the different components of integrated management programme, immunization of hosts is considered as one of the sustainable component. To restrict CCHF virus spreading, use of anti-Hyalom

A newly identified tick-borne Borrelia species and relapsing fever in Tanzania.

Tick-borne relapsing fever caused by the spirochaete Borrelia duttonii is a common cause of serious illness in central Tanzania. Screening of Ornithodoros sp ticks from infested houses for the presence of B duttonii had detected a previously unidentified species of Borrelia. We investigated whether this species infected the human population in a central Tanzanian village, by use of blood slide examination and PCR. PCR was twice as sensitive in detection of infections, showing Borrelia sp in six (11%) of 54 children with fever, and in 13 (4%) of 307 otherwise healthy children. Genotyping Borrel

Grass species and climatic season impact on Rhipicephalus microplus temporal abundance in a tropical region.

BACKGROUND: The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus is a major constraint to livestock production in tropical regions, causing substantial economic losses and driving intensive acaricide use. Despite its importance, the role of pasture composition in shaping off-host tick populations remains poorly understood. This study evaluated whether forage grass species create distinct microenvironments that influence the seasonal abundance and persistence of R. microplus larvae in a tropical region. RESULTS: Larval abundance was higher overall in the dry season than in the rainy season, with a signific

Controlling deltamethrin-resistant Rhipicephalus microplus with a phytoformulation of Annona muricata and Piper longum.

Ticks are one of the most significant vectors for transmitting diseases in livestock. Synthetic acaricides are the primary method for controlling tick populations; however, their indiscriminate application has led to widespread acaricide resistance and environmental concerns. In response to these challenges, this research has focused on developing eco-friendly herbal acaricides that ensure animal safety while minimizing environmental contamination and residual toxicity. Plants produce secondary metabolites, some of which possess insecticidal properties and have potential as natural acaricides.
