Improvement of speech perception following articulatory-target based production training for second language acquisition.

Direct training of articulatory movements can be an effective and efficient tool for second language learning. We have previously developed an articulatory target-based training method using electromagnetic articulography for second language pronunciation. In this training, an estimate of a participant's target midsagittal tongue posture is presented on a display together with the real-time position of their tongue, and used as feedback for adjusting their tongue position to the target position. We showed that Japanese participants improved their pronunciation of American English vowel /æ/, wh

Limits of V4 perisaccadic firing rate modulations in explaining perceptual mislocalization.

Whether and how various visual sensory areas contribute to the perceived location of visual stimuli remains unknown. To test the role of neurons in extrastriate area V4 in generating alterations in spatial perception during saccadic eye movements (saccades), we examined perisaccadic mislocalization-the perceptual phenomenon in which visual stimuli appearing around the time of a saccade are perceived at a different position than their actual location. We designed and implemented a combined behavioral and electrophysiological framework in non-human primates to directly relate trial-by-trial spat

Strength in Numbers, Power in Subjectivity: Scalable Modeling of Individual Annotators for Emotion Recognition Within and Across Corpora.

Emotion expression and perception are nuanced, complex, and highly subjective processes. As a result, when multiple annotators label emotional data, the resulting labels generally contain high degrees of variability. This variability is often addressed by averaging annotator labels into a single averaged or majority-voted ground-truth label. However, an averaged label may mask variation among the perception of individuals, which is at the core of subjective perception. This is an issue because inter-annotator variability contains valuable information about both the sample being evaluated and t

Allophonic perception of VOT contrasts in Spanish children with dyslexia.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have evidenced a different mode of speech perception in dyslexia, characterized by the use of allophonic rather than phonemic units. People with dyslexia perceive phonemic features (such as voicing) less accurately than typical readers, but they perceive allophonic features (i.e., language-independent differences between speech sounds) more accurately. METHOD: In this study, we investigated the perception of voicing contrasts in a sample of 204 Spanish children with or without dyslexia. Identification and discrimination data were collected for synthetic sounds v

Effect of ibuprofen use on muscle soreness, damage, and performance: a preliminary investigation.

Twenty subjects were randomly assigned to: 1) prophylactic ibuprofen (N = 5) [400 mg TID initiated 4 h before collection of baseline data and strenuous eccentric exercise bout], 2) therapeutic ibuprofen (N = 5) [400 mg TID initiated 24 h after baseline], 3) placebo (N = 5), or 4) control (N = 5). Muscle soreness perception, plasma creatine kinase, knee extensor torque, and EMG of the quadriceps were evaluated at baseline, 24, and 48 h. The prophylactic ibuprofen group had between 40 and 50% less muscle soreness perception and significantly less decline in isometric, concentric, and eccentric t

Deep learning-based control of electrically evoked activity in human visual cortex.

Visual cortical prostheses offer a promising path to sight restoration, but current systems elicit crude, variable percepts and rely on manual electrode-by-electrode calibration that does not scale. These limitations reflect a deeper challenge: electrical microstimulation evokes nonlinear, state-dependent population responses in the human visual cortex, complicating the link between stimulation and perception. Here, we present a deep learning framework that leverages a bidirectional cortical implant to causally shape stimulation-evoked population activity in the human visual cortex. The framew

Perceiving and misperceiving speech: lexical and sublexical processing in the superior temporal lobes.

Listeners can use prior knowledge to predict the content of noisy speech signals, enhancing perception. However, this process can also elicit misperceptions. For the first time, we employed a prime-probe paradigm and transcranial magnetic stimulation to investigate causal roles for the left and right posterior superior temporal gyri (pSTG) in the perception and misperception of degraded speech. Listeners were presented with spectrotemporally degraded probe sentences preceded by a clear prime. To produce misperceptions, we created partially mismatched pseudo-sentence probes via homophonic nonwo

Impaired intracortical inhibition in the primary somatosensory cortex in focal hand dystonia.

Somesthetic temporal discrimination (STD) is impaired in focal hand dystonia (FHD). We explored the electrophysiological correlate of the STD deficit to assess whether this is due to dysfunction of temporal inhibition in the somatosensory inhibitory pathway or due to dysfunction in structures responsible for nonmodality-specific timing integration. Eleven FHD patients and 11 healthy volunteers were studied. STD threshold was investigated as the time interval required for perceiving a pair of stimuli as two separate stimuli in time. We also examined the somatosensory-evoked potential (SEP) in a

An upper temporal limit of action-effect integration as reflected by motor adaptation.

Motor parameters of simple, repetitive actions like tapping, pinching, or pushing a button differ as a function of their action effects - adding a consistent, immediate sound-effect to such actions leads to a decrease in applied force. This action-effect related motor adaptation occurs only, however, when the sound-effect follows actions within about 200 ms, which has been hypothesized to reflect a temporal limit of action-effect integration. Using a university student sample, the present study replicated the effect of action-sound effect delays on force application. Furthermore, given that th

A population readout of extrastriate activity reveals biased and smoothed temporal representations across saccades.

Perception of visual time is transiently distorted around saccadic eye movements, yet the neuronal mechanisms constructing perisaccadic representations of time remain unclear. Here, we investigate how perisaccadic temporal information is encoded and read out in extrastriate cortex, by combining electrophysiological recordings in V4 and MT neuronal population in macaque monkeys under high spatiotemporal resolution visual stimulation, and a statistical modeling framework capturing perisaccadic response modulations at single-trial precision. Our analyses show that perisaccadic neuronal responses

Developmental changes in the microgenesis of face perception revealed by effects of context and inversion.

Present studies on the development of face perception mechanisms are ambiguous about the question of whether holistic face vision arises early, or in the second decade of life (Crookes & McKone, 2009). Measuring the time course of face matching we assess effects of context and inversion as correlates of holistic processing in the microgenesis of face perception within the first 650 ms, and compare among 8- to 10-year-old children and adults. Results for adults indicate dominance of holistic viewing at brief timings, which is gradually replaced by feature selective strategies enabling them to s

Dual-Arm Teleoperated Robotic Microsurgery System with Live Volumetric OCT Image Feedback.

In microsurgery, surgeons frequently encounter challenges due to the need for exceptional precision and dexterity, the lack of depth perception for micro-scale surgical maneuvers, and the inevitable effects of fatigue and hand tremor. In surgical robotics, conventional intraoperative perception systems normally provide real-time image feedback, but depth and volumetric information is typically lacking. To overcome these challenges, we propose a teleoperated robotic system with two arms to provide high-fidelity intraoperative volumetric imaging during micro-scale tissue manipulation. This syste

Abnormality of mismatch negativity in response to tone omission in dyslexic adults.

Evidence of abnormalities in the perception of rapidly presented sounds in dyslexia has been interpreted as evidence of a prolonged time window within which sounds can influence the perception of temporally surrounding sounds. We recorded the magnetic mismatch negativity (MMNm) to infrequent tone omissions in a group of six dyslexic adults and six IQ and age-matched controls. An MMNm is only elicited in response to a complete stimulus omission when successive inputs fall within the temporal window of integration (stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) approximately 160 ms). No MMNm responses were rec
