Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography of astrocytic hamartomas in tuberous sclerosis.

Retinal astrocytic hamartomas are benign tumors of the retinal nerve fiber layer (NFL) that may be found in association with tuberous sclerosis (TS). We describe the spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) features of type 1 astrocytic hamartomas in a child with TS that may aid in the diagnosis and follow-up of these lesions. Gradual, dome-shaped hyper-reflective elevations of the retinal NFL were seen on SD-OCT with subtle shadowing of the underlying tissues. In addition, the vitreous cortex showed focal adhesions to the surface of the tumor.

Hair shaft abnormalities in alopecia areata evaluated by optical coherence tomography.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is able to provide highly reproducible measurements of hair shaft thickness, including hair shaft diameter, cross-sectional surface area and hair shape, similar to histology but in vivo. Variations in the caliber of hair shafts have been described in patchy hair loss like alopecia areata (AA) using electron microscopy. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether OCT is useful for the evaluation of hair shaft abnormalities in AA. METHODS: The measurements were performed on patients with AA (n=9), aged 2-66 years. Fifty hairs from the bor

Optical coherence tomography in multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica: an update.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) uses light interference patterns to produce a cross-sectional image of the retina. It is capable of measuring the unmyelinated axons of the retinal ganglionar cells as they converge on the optic disc. In a disease like multiple sclerosis (MS), in which axonal loss has been identified as an important cause of sustained disability, it may prove an invaluable tool. OCT has demonstrated that axonal loss occurs after each episode of optic neuritis and that the degree of axonal loss is correlated to visual outcomes. Furthermore, axonal loss occurs in MS even in the

Multispectral in vivo three-dimensional optical coherence tomography of human skin.

The capability of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to perform "optical biopsy" of tissues within a depth range of 1 to 2 mm with micron-scale resolution in real time makes it a promising biomedical imaging modality for dermatologic applications. Three high-speed, spectrometer-based frequency-domain OCT systems operating at 800 nm (20,000 A-scans/s), 1060 nm, and 1300 nm (both 47,000 A-scans/s) at comparable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), SNR roll-off with scanning depth, and transverse resolution (<15 microm) were used to acquire 3-D tomograms of glabrous and hairy human skin in vivo. Images o

[Optical coherence tomography: from retina imaging to intraoperative use - a review].

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is new diagnostic procedure that has rapidly evolved in the last years. The recently developed spectral domain OCT allows one to increase the imaging speed by a hundred times compared to the first generation time domain OCT and enables three-dimensional imaging as well as real-time imaging of fast moving structures. Volumetric imaging improves the quantitative measurement of morphology and the evaluation of temporal changes. In addition, an exact correlation with images acquired with other imaging modalities is possible. Real-time imaging enables

Optical coherence tomography differs in neuromyelitis optica compared with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is associated with destructive inflammatory lesions, resulting in necrosis and axonal injury. Disability from multiple sclerosis (MS) is due to a combination of demyelination and varying axonal involvement. Optical coherence tomography (OCT), by measuring retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) as a surrogate of axonal injury, has potential to discriminate between these two conditions. METHODS: Included were 22 subjects with NMO or NMO spectrum disorders and 47 with MS. Seventeen subjects with NMO and all with MS had a remote history of optic neuritis (ON) in a
