Changes in the distribution of tenascin during tooth development.

Tenascin is an extracellular matrix molecule that was earlier shown to be enriched in embryonic mesenchyme surrounding the budding epithelium in various organs including the tooth. In the present study tenascin was localized by immunohistology throughout the course of tooth development in the mouse and rat using polyclonal antibodies against chick tenascin. The results indicate that tenascin is expressed by the lineage of dental mesenchymal cells throughout tooth ontogeny. The intensity of staining with tenascin antibodies in the dental papilla mesenchyme was temporarily reduced at cap stage w

Development, growth and eruption of permanent incisor teeth in Romney sheep.

The development of permanent incisor teeth of sheep was followed from the age of six weeks to 116 weeks. The teeth were observed through the bud, cap and bell stages, and the development of enamel and dentine. At the same time that amelogenesis started, the papillary layer developed from the intermediate layer and the outer dental epithelium began to form the cell rests of Malassez. The ameloblasts went through secretory, transitional and maturational phases, and in due course disappeared, after which cementum was laid down over the enamel surface. Initially the connective tissue of the follic

Stress analysis of endodontically treated teeth restored with post-retained crowns: A finite element analysis study.

BACKGROUND: The authors conducted a study to analyze the stress concentration areas in a tooth restored with a post-retained crown under various conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors constructed a three-dimensional finite element model describing a maxillary second premolar restored with an all-ceramic crown supported by a titanium post and a resin-based composite core. They applied static vertical and horizontal loads of 100 newton to the cusp tip of the crown and recorded Von Mises and tensile stress values. The variables investigated were the presence of the post, coronal and apic

Three-dimensional finite element analysis of the effect of different bone quality on stress distribution in an implant-supported crown.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Primary implant stability and bone density are variables that are considered essential to achieve predictable osseointegration and long-term clinical survival of implants. Information about the influence of bone quality on stress distribution in an implant-supported crown is limited. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of 4 different bone qualities on stress distribution in an implant-supported mandibular crown, using 3-dimensional (3-D) finite element (FE) analysis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 3-D FE model of a mandibular section of bone with a

Eruption process of the second molar.

The second molar is located at the distal of the first molar, and we must be aware of its stage of development when we plan to move the first molar distally. Few researchers have investigated the development of second molars. The purpose of this study was to observe the eruption process of the maxillary and mandibular second molars by using 238 panoramic radiographs. The developmental stages of the second molar were divided into four stages: the whole crown calcified = stage 1; beginning root formation = stage 2; initial formation of the radicular bifurcation = stage 3; and the root length is

Endodontic and Orthodontic Management of a Fused Mandibular Incisor and Supernumerary: A Case Report.

Dental fusion is a rare anomaly that can present unique challenges with clinical treatment. This report outlines a case of an 11-year-old who presented with fusion of a mandibular lateral incisor with a supernumerary. At presentation, the teeth were fully mature and normally responsive to pulp sensibility testing. Assessment with CBCT confirmed that the majority of the root canal system and pulp chambers were separate, with a single point of communication between both tooth units in the mid-crown. Removal of one of the teeth was requested to facilitate the patient's orthodontic treatment plan,

Root formation in ectopically transplanted teeth of the frog, Rana pipiens I. Tooth morphogenesis.

In order to determine the intrinsic (genetic) and extrinsic (functional) parts of the naturally ankylosed tooth, a qualitative study of the development and fate of tooth buds transplanted individually or within the premaxilla was carried out. These teeth were transplanted as autografts during crown formation. They were placed in either the anterior chamber of the eye or in a dorsal subcutaneous site. Most of the 163 transplants survived and were examined at intervals from 0 to 180 days by gross, histologic and microradiographic methods. Tooth buds transplanted with or without the premaxilla we

Patterns of morphological variation in enamel-dentin junction and outer enamel surface of human molars.

Tooth crown patterning is governed by the growth and folding of the inner enamel epithelium (IEE) and the following enamel deposition forms outer enamel surface (OES). We hypothesized that overall dental crown shape and covariation structure are determined by processes that configurate shape at the enamel-dentine junction (EDJ), the developmental vestige of IEE. This this hypothesis was tested by comparing patterns of morphological variation between EDJ and OES in human permanent maxillary first molar (UM1) and deciduous second molar (um2). Using geometric morphometric methods, we described mo…

Oral features and dental health in Hurler Syndrome following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Hurler Syndrome is associated with a deficiency of a specific lysosomal enzyme involved in the degradation of glycosaminoglycans. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in early infancy is undertaken to help prevent the accumulation of glycosaminoglycans and improve organ function. AIM: To investigate the oral features and dental health of patients with Hurler Syndrome who have undergone successful HSCT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-five patients (median age 8.6 years) post-HSCT (mean age 9.4 months) underwent oral assessment (mean of 7.5 years post-HSCT). RESULTS: Dent

Effect of eda loss of function on upper jugal tooth morphology.

The Tabby/eda mice, which bear a loss of function mutation for the eda (ectodysplasinA) gene, are known to display developmental anomalies in organs with an ectodermal origin. Although the lower jugal (cheek) teeth of Tabby/eda mice have been extensively studied, upper teeth have never been investigated in detail. However, this may help us to further understand the function of the eda gene in tooth development. In this work, the shape and size of both the crown and the radicular system were studied in the Tabby/eda mice upper jugal teeth. To deal with the high morphological variability, we def

Surgical Extrusion of Anterior Teeth with Intrusion Traumatic Injury: A Report of two Cases.

Intrusion is the most severe luxation injury type, which results in both soft and hard tissue damage. In severe intrusions, the crown must be re-positioned in the arch to avoid periapical pathology and marginal bone loss. There is minimal information about the effect of treatment delay on pulpal and periodontal healing in intrusion trauma. The present paper reports on two cases of severe intrusive luxation applied late at different times treated with surgical extrusion. The first patient, an 11-year-old female, referred to Tokat GOP pediatric dentistry clinic three days after the intrusion too
