[Correlation between the phenotype and genotype of tooth agenesis patients by tooth agenesis code].

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the correlation between the phenotype and genotype of tooth agenesis using the tooth agenesis code (TAC) and the traditional descriptor for missing teeth. METHODS: Patients with isolated hypodontia caused by PAX9 or MSX1 mutation reported before May 2007 were enrolled. The teeth missing rate and TAC code were recorded. The missing teeth patterns caused by the two mutations were compared. RESULTS: The teeth missing rates in each teeth positions were significantly different between maxillary and mandibular except maxillary central incisor, lateral incisor and mandibular c

Does having children affect women's oral health? A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Many believe women's oral health deteriorates as a result of having children. If so, such associations should exist among women but not among men. The aims of this study were to investigate whether number of children is associated with experience of dental disease and tooth loss among both men and women and to examine whether this association is affected by other variables of interest. METHODS: This study used data from the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development study, a longitudinal study of 1037 individuals (48.4% female) born from April 1972 to March 1973 in Dunedin, …

A novel aesthetic technique for alignment of an impacted anterior tooth: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Impacted anterior teeth are common, with sequalae including root resorption of adjacent or nearby teeth. Management depends on patient- and tooth-specific factors; however, in cases of severe resorption, elective tooth loss may be favoured. This case discusses an aesthetic solution to disimpaction of an anterior tooth, involving multidisciplinary input. PATIENT CONCERNS: A girl aged 13 years 10 months presented to an orthodontic department, complaining of missing teeth and poor dental aesthetics. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Class II division 1 incisor relationship on a Class I skeletal …

Increased risk for tooth extraction in primary hyperparathyroidism and hypercalcemia: a population study.

The aim of this study was to analyze dental comorbidities in untreated primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT). Patients with pHPT subjected to parathyroidectomy (PTX) at Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, during 2011-2016 (n = 982) were selected from the Scandinavian Quality Register of Thyroid, Parathyroid and Adrenal surgery and compared to a general population cohort (n = 2944), matched for age and gender. Dental data was obtained from the Swedish Dental Health Registry for the 3 years prior to PTX. The incidence rate ratios (IRRs) of tooth loss by extraction, periodontal interventions,…

Al-Awadi-Raas-Rothschild syndrome with dental anomalies and a novel WNT7A mutation.

Al-Awadi-Raas-Rothschild syndrome (AARRS; OMIM 276820) is a very rare autosomal recessive limb malformation syndrome caused by WNT7A mutations. AARRS is characterized by various degrees of limb aplasia and hypoplasia. Normal intelligence and malformations of urogenital system are frequent findings. Complete loss of WNT7A function has been shown to cause AARRS, however, its partial loss leads to the milder malformation, Fuhrmann syndrome. An Indian boy affected with AARRS is reported. A novel homozygous base substitution mutation c.550A > C (p.Asn184Asp) is identified in the patient. Parents we

The effect of osteoporosis on periodontal status, alveolar bone and orthodontic tooth movement. A literature review.

Osteoporosis, an age-related condition, is defined as a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and micro-architectural deterioration with a consequent increase in bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture. It is considered the most common bone metabolic disease and it constitutes a major public health problem. Several studies indicate that osteoporosis may be related to decreased oral bone density and alveolar bone loss. In osteoporotic patients, uncoupling of bone resorption and bone formation has taken place. Both bone resorption and bone formation are accelerated, and

Treatment options of untreatable traumatized anterior maxillary teeth for future use of dental implantation.

The anterior maxilla is the most traumatized region during childhood. Posttraumatic complications occasionally lead to tooth loss as well as the need for future implants. Unfortunately, it is contraindicated to place dental implants during childhood. A waiting period of approximately 8 to 10 years before completion of growth is required. For this patient to become a candidate for future dental implants, it is necessary to ensure the continuous growth and to preserve the dimensions of the alveolar process until growth has ceased from time of injury until joint maturation. To achieve these goals…

Alveolar ridge preservation versus early implant placement in single non-molar sites: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analyses was to evaluate the outcomes of alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) following extraction of non-molar teeth in comparison to early implant placement (EIP) in terms of clinical and radiographic changes, need for additional augmentation at the time of implant placement, patient-reported outcomes, and implant failure rate. METHODS: Electronic databases were searched to identify randomized and non-randomized studies that compared ARP to EIP. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration's Risk of Bias tool. Data were a

Site development for anterior single implant esthetics: the dentulous site.

An inevitable loss of soft and hard tissue after tooth extraction often results in a compromised site for anterior implant esthetics. Various augmentation techniques have been advocated as corrective procedures, but these techniques are time-consuming and not always predictable. Therefore, the fundamental concept of site development for anterior single implant esthetics in the event of a failing tooth is to preserve the existing gingival and osseous tissue. This article identifies factors that affect tissue changes and describes an integration of surgical and prosthodontic approaches that can

Interventions for accelerating orthodontic tooth movement: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions on accelerating orthodontic tooth movement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched the databases of PubMed, Embase, Science Citation Index, CENTRAL, and SIGLE from January 1990 to August 2011 for randomized or quasi-randomized controlled trials that assessed the effectiveness of interventions on accelerating orthodontic tooth movement. The processes of study search, selection, and quality assessment were conducted independently in duplicate by two review authors. Original outcome data, if possible, underwent statistical pooling by using Re

A new approach in restorative treatment of external root resorption. A case report.

This case report describes the treatment of an external root resorption with extensive loss of tooth structure and bone at the labial surface of an upper left central incisor. The area of bone loss and root resorption was surgically exposed and an impression was taken using curing silicone. An individual ceramic insert was fabricated, allowing endodontic retreatment through an artificial root canal. The insert was incorporated using a dentin bonding system and a dual curing luting composite. Following endodontic retreatment and internal bleaching, a ceramic veneer was bonded to the tooth to ob

Otodental syndrome: a case report and genetic considerations.

A 5-year-old boy presented with otodental syndrome. His maxillary and mandibular incisors were within normal limits. The premolar/molar areas in all quadrants were occupied by markedly macrodontic teeth showing globular shape. The canines had a similar rounded shape. Two canines and 1 of the other abnormal teeth demonstrated areas of yellow hypoplastic enamel. Radiographs revealed that some of the abnormal teeth had bifurcated pulp chambers and pulp stones. Premolar tooth germs were absent. Audiometry demonstrated that the child had a marked bilateral sensorineural hearing loss for frequencies

Patient-centered outcomes after subepithelial connective tissue grafts and coronally advanced flaps.

OBJECTIVE: The use of a coronally advanced flap (CAF) and connective tissue graft (CTG) is a well-established procedure to cover single and multiple recessions and improve soft tissue esthetics. However, until now, there are still limited data evaluating patient morbidity, the fear of imminent tooth loss, and modification of sensitivity in surgical areas. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the patient-centered outcomes associated with CAF + CTG. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Thirty-four patients (mean age, 30.76 ± 6.88 years) with single or multiple Class I and II gingival recessions were t…

Radiography of spontaneous periodontitis in dogs.

The pattern and distribution of periodontitis were investigated in 162 randomly selected dogs available for necropsy in veterinary practice. There were 82 males and 80 females of 50 different breeds (150 dogs were pure-bred and 12 were mongrels, aged between 7 months and 14 yr. Presence of periodontitis was determined by assessment of alveolar bone loss on radiographs of the skulls and jaws. Periodontitis occurred frequently with increasing age, although the prevalence varied markedly among and within different breeds. Of the breeds most represented in the sample, periodontitis was most freque

Repeated adjustment of new dentures for dysphagia.

When multiple tooth loss causes loss of occlusal-masticatory function, functional recovery is normally obtained with the help of removable dentures. After resection of the jawbone or tongue because of tumors, the movement of the tongue and its surrounding tissues is limited, and patients exhibit a more pronounced loss of chewing and swallowing than that observed in other cases of multiple tooth loss. In such cases, it is necessary to take extra care in determining the position of the mandible, arrangement of artificial teeth, and morphology of the palate. In the present case, the left lower ja…

Cuspal Coverage Direct Resin Composite Restorations for Cracked Teeth: A Five-Year Clinical Study.

INTRODUCTION: The restorative strategies for cracked teeth vary considerably, and both direct and indirect restorations, with and without cuspal coverage have been proposed. However, the literature has shown no consensus among authors, and long-term clinical studies focusing on the direct restorative treatment of cracked teeth remain limited. This five-year retrospective clinical study aimed to evaluate the survival rate of teeth affected by coronal cracks, treated with cuspal coverage direct resin composite restorations, and to evaluate the risk factors associated with tooth loss. METHODS AN…
