Case report: Rutherfurd syndrome associated with Marfan syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Rutherfurd syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that is primarily characterised by the classical triad of gingival fibromatosis, delayed tooth eruption and corneal dystrophy. Associated features of the condition include abnormally shaped teeth, mental retardation and aggressive behaviour. CASE REPORT: His Consultant Clinical Geneticist referred a 2-year-old boy to the Dept. of Paediatric Dentistry at Manchester Dental Hospital. The child and his father had a diagnosis of Rutherfurd Syndrome; a rare autosomal-dominant condition featuring corneal dystrophy, gingival hypertrophy, abno

Do Ankle-Foot Orthoses Reduce Cavovarus Deformity in Individuals With Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease?

BACKGROUND: The use of ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) is a mainstay in the treatment of cavovarus deformity associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, but their ability to reduce cavovarus deformity is poorly characterized. Similarly, associations between AFO design features and degree of deformity reduction are unknown. Weightbearing CT has been used to describe CMT disease-related cavovarus deformity through both two-dimensional (2D) radiographic measures and three-dimensional statistical shape modeling (SSM). However, neither method has been used to evaluate differences in foot posture

Does air abrasion improve the retention of restorations in non-carious cervical lesions? An 18-month split-mouth randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether dentin airborne-particle abrasion (APA) with aluminum oxide affects the retention and clinical performance of composite resin restorations in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs). METHODS: This prospective, randomized, split-mouth, double-blind controlled trial included 63 participants and 126 restorations presenting at least two similar NCCLs. Restorations were randomized and allocated to either a control protocol using a universal adhesive in selective enamel etching mode and restored with bulk-fill composite resin, or to the same protocol preceded by APA prec

Primary and secondary prevention of periodontal and peri-implant diseases: Introduction to, and objectives of the 11th European Workshop on Periodontology consensus conference.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis prevalence remains high. Peri-implantitis is an emerging public health issue. Such a high burden of disease and its social, oral and systemic consequences are compelling reasons for increased attention towards prevention for individuals, professionals and public health officials. METHODS: Sixteen systematic reviews and meta-reviews formed the basis for workshop discussions. Deliberations resulted in four consensus reports. RESULTS: This workshop calls for renewed emphasis on the prevention of periodontitis and peri-implantitis. A critical element is the recognition

Conventional Scalpel and Diode Laser Approach for the Management of Traumatic Fibroma.

An oral fibroma is a benign scar-like reaction frequently resulting from chronic mouth irritation. It is also called an oral polyp, fibrous nodule, localised intraoral fibrous hyperplasia, and traumatic fibroma. Chronic irritation from things like biting one's lips or cheek, orthodontic treatments, rubbing against a hard tooth, or wearing dentures or other dental prostheses is frequently the cause. It is often the same colour as the surrounding mouth lining, but occasionally, it can be paler or appear darker if it has bled. Trauma can cause the surface to become rough and scaly or ulcerated. I

The effect of different chemical surface treatments of denture teeth on shear bond strength: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: The development of better cross linked acrylic resin teeth has solved the problems related to wearing and discoloration of acrylic teeth. The same cross linking at ridge lap region acts as a double edge sword as it weakens the bond between denture base and tooth. AIM OF STUDY: The purpose of study was to evaluate the effect of surface treatment on the bond strength of resin teeth to denture base resin using monomethyl methacrylate monomer and dichloromethane with no surface treatment acting as control. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Denture base cylinder samples in wax (n=180) were made wi

Changes in the edentulous maxilla in persons wearing implant-retained mandibular overdentures.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: It has been suggested that risk for severe resorption in the anterior maxilla is increased in persons wearing mandibular implant-retained overdentures. However, little information is available about the changes in the edentulous maxilla after mandibular implant treatment. PURPOSE: This study determined the possible changes in the width of the maxillary residual ridge 6 years after receiving mandibular implant-supported or implant-mucosa-supported overdentures and evaluated the association between the anatomic changes and subjective complaints with maxillary complete dent

Long-term assessment of the periodontal health of removable partial denture wearers: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The long-term effects of wearing removable partial dentures (RPDs) remain unclear. PURPOSE: This systematic review addressed the question "Is the long-term use of RPDs deleterious to the remaining teeth?" MATERIAL AND METHODS: This review was guided by the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) checklist. Six databases and nonpeer-reviewed literature were searched in April 2024 without language or follow-up restrictions. Only clinical studies evaluating RPD long-term use were included. The risk of bias and evidence certainty were ass

Aligners, can my child use them too?

This is a frequently asked question. The answer depends on various factors, with cooperation being among the most essential. As a parent, you must ask yourself if you can rely on your child to wear aligners correctly for most of the day. If the answer to this question is yes, then clear aligners may be a better choice than traditional braces. There are three major benefits of clear aligners in children: 1. Greater comfort, aligners are less voluminous than traditional braces and more likely to prevent irritation, mouth ulcers and other discomfort that derives from the movement of the orthodont
