Cardiac imaging in athlete's heart: current status and future prospects.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity contributes to changes in cardiac morphology, which are known as "athlete's heart". Therefore, these modifications can be characterized using different imaging modalities such as echocardiography, including Doppler (flow Doppler and Doppler myocardial imaging) and speckle-tracking, along with cardiac magnetic resonance, and cardiac computed tomography. MAIN TEXT: Echocardiography is the most common method for assessing cardiac structure and function in athletes due to its availability, repeatability, versatility, and low cost. It allows the measurement of paramet

Measuring the positional accuracy of computer assisted surgical tracking systems.

Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery (CAOS) technology is constantly evolving with support from a growing number of clinical trials. In contrast, reports of technical accuracy are scarce, with there being no recognized guidelines for independent measurement of the basic static performance of computer assisted systems. To address this problem, a group of surgeons, academics and manufacturers involved in the field of CAOS collaborated with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International and drafted a set of standards for measuring and reporting the technical performance of s

Atomistic Mechanisms of Silicone Rubber Degradation Under Coupled Temperature-Humidity-Electric Field Conditions.

Silicone rubber is an important external insulating material for composite bushings, composite insulators, and other power equipment. During long-term service, it is inevitably exposed to coupled environmental and electrical stresses, such as elevated temperature, moisture ingress, strong electric fields, and partial discharge, which may lead to hydrophobicity loss, surface chalking, crack propagation, and particle shedding. To reveal the microscopic degradation mechanism of silicone rubber under complex operating conditions, a molecular model of methyl vinyl silicone rubber was constructed us

Microsaccade dysfunction and adaptation in hemianopia after stroke.

BACKGROUND: Besides the reduction of visual field size, hemianopic patients may also experience other poorly understood symptoms such as blurred vision, diplopia, or reduced visual acuity, which may be related to microsaccade function. OBJECTIVE: To determine (i) if microsaccades are altered in hemianopia; (ii) how altered microsaccade features correlate with visual performances; and (iii) how their direction relates to visual field defect topography. METHODS: In this case-control study, microsaccades of hemianopic stroke patients (n = 14) were assessed with high-resolution eye-tracking tech

Expression of Microcystis Biosynthetic Gene Clusters in Natural Populations Suggests Temporally Dynamic Synthesis of Novel and Known Secondary Metabolites in Western Lake Erie.

Microcystis spp. produce diverse secondary metabolites within freshwater cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) around the world. In addition to the biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) encoding known compounds, Microcystis genomes harbor numerous BGCs of unknown function, indicating a poorly understood chemical repertoire. While recent studies show that Microcystis produces several metabolites in the lab and field, little work has focused on analyzing the abundance and expression of its broader suite of BGCs during cyanoHAB events. Here, we use metagenomic and metatranscriptomic approac

Numerical Simulation and Experimental Study on Residual Stress in the Curved Surface Forming of 12CrNi2 Alloy Steel by Laser Melting Deposition.

The performance and service life of the nuclear emergency diesel engine shaft made of 12CrNi2 alloy steel is very important for the safety of nuclear power. Laser melting deposition (LMD) is a challenging camshaft-forming technology due to its high precision, rapid prototyping, and excellent parts performance. However, LMD is an unsteady process under the local action of laser, especially for curved surface forming, which is more likely to generate large residual stress on components, resulting in cracks and other defects. At present, the stress research on LMD curved surface forming is relati

Intrafractional Voxel-wise Anatomic Motion Tracking Guided by Multimodal Respiratory Surrogates in Radiotherapy: Framework Development and Multicenter Validation.

PURPOSE: Intrafractional respiratory motion management encounters trade-offs between target coverage, organ at risk (OAR) sparing, and treatment efficacy. Real-time tracking is promising but hindered by invasiveness risks, lack of global deformations, or inadaptability to irregular respiration. Currently respiratory modeling-based adaptive tracking may offer ideal solutions, but is limited by discrete clinical priors, highly-sparse observations, and complex motion variability. This study advances the constrained modeling toward a synergistic knowledge- and information-augmentation-driven parad

Tracking gastrointestinal nematode risk on cattle farms through pasture contamination mapping.

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasites in grazing cattle are a major cause of production loss and their control is increasingly difficult due to anthelmintic resistance and climate change. Rotational grazing can support control and decrease reliance on chemical intervention, but is often complex due to the need to track grazing periods and infection levels, and the effect of weather on larval availability. In this paper, a simulation model was developed to predict the availability of infective larvae of the bovine GIN, Ostertagia ostertagi, at the level of individual pastures. The model was

Age-Associated Behavioral Alterations in Laboratory-Housed Octodon degus.

Octodon degus are long-lived, diurnal, and highly social rodents increasingly used in studies of aging and neurodegeneration. However, behavioral profiles of aged laboratory-housed degus remain incompletely characterized, limiting the interpretation of aging-associated functional and molecular phenotypes in this species. Here, we evaluated age-associated changes in locomotor activity, open-field exploration, social novelty behavior, and manually scored ethological responses in young and old degus maintained under long-term laboratory housing conditions. Automated behavioral tracking was perfor

Humphrey vs. Compass: A Comparative Study of Two Perimetry Devices.

BACKGROUND: Visual field testing is essential for glaucoma diagnostics; however, patient cooperation can affect the reliability of the results. The COMPASS perimeter (COM; CentreVue-iCare, Padua, Italy) offers an innovative approach to enhance test quality by compensating for fixation losses and automatically adjusting light stimuli. Additionally, it enables simultaneous fundus photography during perimetry. In this prospective study, we compare the COM perimeter with the Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA) in glaucoma patients and healthy subjects in terms of visual field parameters, reproducibility

Tropical cyclone FANTALA's three turnbacks in the northeast of Madagascar Island.

The unique Tropical cyclone (TC) Fantala appeared in the central Indian Ocean (12.4°S, 73.5°E) at 00Z on April 11 in 2016 and moved northwestward along the northeast of Madagascar at 18 Z on April 15. Then, two incomprehensible turnbacks formed a unique TC track. The dynamic mechanisms of the three turnbacks were first studied based on remote sensing and multisource reanalysis data. The results reveal that the wind field with upper divergence and lower convergence promotes the development of Fantala. The anticyclone high pressure on the middle level atmosphere is an important factor for TC tur

Higher risk of upper respiratory tract infection post marathon running: when physical exercise becomes a threat to the immune system.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported that marathon runners have a higher risk of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) post marathon than non-exercising controls. However, other studies did not find a higher risk of URTI in the same participants before and after a marathon, precluding a conclusive consensus. Besides the between-subjects effects, another important confounding factor in these results is the different pre and post follow-up time to track URTI. OBJECTIVES: Identify by meta-analysis whether a marathon Running increases the risk of URTI, adjusting the follow-up time to tra

Etiology and pathophysiology of tendon ruptures in sports.

Of all spontaneous tendon ruptures, complete Achilles tendon tears are most closely associated with sports activities (1-3). Schönbauer (3) reported that 75% of all ruptures of the Achilles tendon are related to sports. In Plecko & Passl (2) the number was 60%. In our material of 430 cases, the number of sports-related Achilles ruptures was very similar (62%), while only 2% of ruptures of other tendons were sports-related (P < 0.001) (1). Also, the majority of Achilles reruptures occurred in sports. The ruptures occurred most often in soccer (34%), track and field (16%) and basketball (14%). T…

Multi-method, longitudinal study on behavioral, emotional, and developmental factors of children in residential care in Lower Austria: A study protocol.

BACKGROUND: In Austria, there is a significant research gap concerning the quality of out-of-home care (OoHC) provisions and their capacity to promote children's well-being and development. Given the intrusive nature of such interventions, thorough evaluation is essential. This study protocol outlines a multi-method, long-term, and multi-perspective study that investigates: 1) the circumstances leading to full-time residential care placements; 2) the development of behavioral, emotional, and social factors over time; 3) key factors influencing children's outcomes in residential care 4) the str

An A549 Cell-Based Approach Using Repeated Fluorescence Readouts for Assessing Reactive Oxygen Species Activity of Atmospheric Particulate Matter.

Exposure to atmospheric particulate matter (PM) is a major public-health concern, in part because PM can perturb cellular redox homeostasis. This study evaluates an in vitro A549/DCFH-DA approach using repeated fluorescence readouts to assess PM2.5-induced oxidative activity. Untreated and assay-specific controls were combined with zymosan and NIST Standard Reference Material® 2584 suspended in PBS, and fluorescence was monitored at multiple readout times over a 15 min-6 h window. Method performance was characterized using the coefficient of variation (CV) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). A de

In vivo nanoparticle-based T cell imaging can predict therapy response towards adoptive T cell therapy in experimental glioma.

Rationale: Intrinsic brain tumors, such as gliomas are largely resistant to immunotherapies including immune checkpoint blockade. Adoptive cell therapies (ACT) including chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) or T cell receptor (TCR)-transgenic T cell therapy targeting glioma-associated antigens are an emerging field in glioma immunotherapy. However, imaging techniques for non-invasive monitoring of adoptively transferred T cells homing to the glioma microenvironment are currently lacking. Methods: Ultrasmall iron oxide nanoparticles (NP) can be visualized non-invasively by magnetic resonance imaging

Linking disease and community ecology through behavioural indicators: immunochallenge of white-footed mice and its ecological impacts.

1. Pathogens and immune challenges can induce changes in host phenotype in ways that indirectly impact important community interactions, including those that affect host-pathogen interactions. 2. To explore host behavioural response to immune challenge, we exposed wild white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) to an immunogen from an endemic, zoonotic pathogen, the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi. White-footed mice are a major reservoir host of Lyme disease (LD) spirochetes in northeastern USA and an abundant member of forest communities. The activity patterns, foraging behaviour, and space use
