OBJECTIVE: Hepatic dysfunction is common in dengue infection and the degree of liver dysfunction in children varies from mild injury with elevation of transaminases to severe injury with jaundice. This study was undertaken to assess the spectrum of hepatic involvement in dengue infection.
METHODS: 110 children with serologically positive dengue fever aged between 2 months - 14 years were studied for their hepatic functions both clinically and biochemically after excluding malaria, enteric fever, Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B with relevant investigations.
FINDINGS: All cases were grouped into D…

Vigabatrin increases gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels by irreversible inhibition of the GABA-catabolizing enzyme GABA-transaminase (GABA-T). Preclinical studies suggest anxiolytic effects in vigabatrin treated rats. Anxiolytic effects in patients with panic disorder (PD) could therefore be expected. To evaluate putative anxiolytic properties of vigabatrin in humans, CCK-4-induced panic symptoms were studied in healthy volunteers before and after vigabatrin treatment. After placebo-controlled administration of 50 microg CCK-4, ten healthy volunteers received vigabatrin for seven days with

Fatty liver and kidney syndrome (FLKS), a naturally occurring but experimentally reproducible disease in chickens, has several clinical, pathological, and biochemical features in common with Reye's syndrome. Because of this, it has been suggested that FLKS may serve as an animal model of Reye's syndrome. We have examined, therefore, various parameters characteristic of Reye's syndrome in chickens affected with FLKS to further delineate the similarities and differences between the two disorders. Plasma glucose concentrations were significantly lower in chickens affected with FLKS which may be c

The ethanolic extract of Ficus carica leaves was screened for hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity in hepatotoxic Albino rats induced via carbon tetrachloride. The degree of protection was measured by estimating biochemical parameters such as serum glutamate Oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase ( SGPT),totalprotein (TP), totalalbumin (TA), alkaline phosphatase (ALKP) and the level of total serum bilirubin. The extract in addition reduced CCl4 induced lipid peroxidation in - vivo and in - vitro. The ethanolic extract (50 mg/kg, 100mg/kg,200mg/kg)exhibited

The major aim of this work was to investigate how alcohol-induced oxidative stress in combined chemotherapy changes the metabolic function of the liver in experimental animals. This research was conducted to establish how bromocriptine, haloperidol and azithromycin, applied to the experimental model, affected the antioxidative status of the liver. The following parameters were determined: reduced glutathione, activities of glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, peroxidase, catalase, xanthine oxidase and lipid peroxidation intensity. Alanine transaminase was measured in serum. Alcohol s

The different fractions of alcoholic extract and one phenolic compound AB-IV of seeds of Cichorium intybus Linn were screened for antihepatotoxic activity on carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced liver damage in albino rats. The degree of protection was measured using biochemical parameters like aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALKP), and total protein (TP). The methanol fraction and compound AB-IV were found to possess a potent antihepatotoxic activity comparable to the standard drug Silymarin (Silybon-70). The histopathological study of the live

Nonhematopoietic hepatic neoplasms (n = 25) were diagnosed in 21 cats during a 5.5-year period. Thirteen of the neoplasms were benign bile duct adenomas and 12 were malignant, 6 of which were bile duct adenocarcinomas. All cats were greater than or equal to 10 years old, and 14 were male. Main clinical signs were anorexia and lethargy, and 15 of 21 cats had hepatomegaly. All 21 cats were feline leukemia virus-test negative. Although there was a trend toward high activities of serum alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase, neither clinical signs nor enzyme activity were specific for dia

A 63-year-old man with acute psittacosis had severe hepatic damage after ingesting about 10 g of acetaminophen over a 48 hour period. Transaminase levels showed striking elevation, with a serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase level of over 15,000 IU/liter, and decreased rapidly, consistent with a toxic insult. No other etiologic agents were identified by history or serologic testing to explain this degree of damage. Liver histologic findings at autopsy showed severe central necrosis. Although psittacosis may infrequently cause a similar pattern of hepatic injury, disease of this severity has

One hundred and fifty four patients admitted to a general hospital psychiatric unit with a history of poor diet were examined. Serum pyruvate was estimated in all, red cell transketolase in 74 and red cell aspartate transaminase in 66. Significantly more of the 58 abnormally low thiamine patients than of the normal thiamine group showed clinical signs of malnutrition or were diagnosed as chronic alcoholics, drug addicts, schizophrenics or endogenous depressives. Significantly more endogenous depressives than other patients had a raised aspartate transaminase activity coefficient (pyridoxine la

Lupus hepatitis is a rare initial manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and may present with abnormal liver function tests. Differentiating hepatic dysfunction related to SLE from other causes, particularly autoimmune hepatitis, is important because management and prognosis differ significantly depending on the underlying etiology. Liver biopsy may play a critical role in distinguishing lupus hepatitis from other causes of hepatic injury. We describe a case of a man with newly diagnosed SLE who presented with prolonged febrile illness and elevated transaminases.

A previously healthy 15-year-old female developed sudden onset right lower extremity swelling, pain, and erythematous linear streaking from the ankle to mid-thigh. Duplex venous ultrasound revealed multiple superficial and deep venous thrombi in the right lower extremity. Incidentally, the patient was also noted to have elevated transaminases and a microcytic anemia with significant iron deficiency. Additional evaluation ultimately led to the diagnosis of 2 distinct but interconnected chronic conditions, one of which progressed to requiring liver transplantation.

Anti-tuberculosis drug-induced liver injury(ATB-DILI) is the most common adverse reaction during anti-tuberculosis therapy in tuberculosis patients. At present, the diagnosis of ATB-DILI is mainly based on traditional biomarkers such as transaminases, but these indicators have low specificity for liver toxicity, they cannot explain the mechanism of liver injury and the early onset of ATB-DILI. Based on the prediction of disease severity, treatment and prevention, this paper described the current potential biomarkers of ATB-DILI.

A 3-yr 8-mo-old female was diagnosed as having a congenital stricture of the common hepatic duct. She demonstrated hepatomegaly with marked elevations of serum transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, and bile acids without clinical jaundice or hyperbilirubinemia. Liver biopsy suggested extrahepatic obstruction. Ultrasonography was nondiagnostic, but percutaneous cholangiography demonstrated blockage at the bifurcation of the hepatic ducts. A Roux-en-Y anastomosis of the jejunum to the common hepatic ducts relieved the obstruction and ameliorated clinical evidence of liver disease.

Peh-hue-juwa-chi-cao (PHJCC) is a common commercial name for the herbal extract of either Hedyotis diffusa (HD), H. corymbosa (HC), or Mollugo pentaphylla (MP). The present study was carried out to investigate the anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective effects of these three extracts in rats. The results indicated that extracts of HC, HD and MP possess anti-inflammatory activity, and that MP has the greatest inhibition against carrageenan-induced paw edema. In the hepatoprotective study, results indicated that the three plant extracts significantly reduced the acute elevation of serum glutamat

Many patients with porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) have been reported to be hepatitis C virus (HCV) carriers, suggesting that HCV infection plays a role in the pathogenesis of this type of porphyria. In this study, we report a patient with chronic hepatitis C-associated PCT. Therapy with interferon (IFN) transiently decreased HCV RNA levels, but levels of urinary porphyrins and serum transaminases and ferritin remained unchanged. Serum ferritin and urinary porphyrin levels improved after phlebotomy, but this therapy was not effective in improving serum transaminase levels. Although a physiopatho…

Celiac disease is a multisystem disorder. Celiac hepatitis characterized by gluten-responsive mild elevation of transaminases is the more common liver manifestation of celiac disease. Celiac disease may also be associated or coexist with other chronic liver disorders. Shared genetic risk and increased intestinal permeability have been suggested to be the most relevant events in the pathogenesis of liver injury in celiac disease. The aim of this article is to review the full spectrum of liver disorders in patients with celiac disease.

While cardiopulmonary symptoms are common in patients undergoing classical or, due to physical exercise, exertional heat stroke, the failure of other organs is a rarely described phenomenon. Here we present two cases of acute hepatic failure, one due to classic heat shock, while the other occurred while the patient was doing a marathon-type running. Both cases presented with very high transaminases and significantly elevated international normalized ratio (INR). No other causes for liver failure could be identified but physical exhaustion and hyperthermia.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy can unmask underlying medical conditions, as evidenced by laboratory abnormalities that do not resolve postpartum.
CASE: A woman developed preeclampsia associated with elevated hepatic transaminases and serum creatinine. When her liver enzymes failed to normalize 8 weeks postpartum an evaluation led to the diagnosis of type III autoimmune hepatitis.
CONCLUSION: Obstetricians should consider confirming resolution of laboratory abnormalities attributed to preeclampsia by the 6-week postpartum visit. Abnormalities that persist warrant an evaluation to exclude chronic medic…

A patient with severe type II cryoglobulinemia after ten years of asymptomatic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is reported. Laboratory data showed hypergammaglobulinemia with polyclonal IgG and monoclonal IgM, blood hyperviscosity, high level of cryocrit (60%), HCV viremia, and normal levels of serum transaminases. Due to cold exposure, acrocyanosis and cardiac ischemic attack occurred; he recovered after being artificially warmed. Administration of prednisolone and natural interferon-alpha for three months resulted in significant decreases in the levels of serum IgM and cryocrit.

The case of a 59-years old patient with typical clinical manifestations of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC): pruritus, asthenia, arthralgias and dry syndrome, with skin pigmentation and AMA positivity, hypergammaglobulinemia and an elevation of IgM is presented. Liver biopsy was compatible with stage II PBC. No analytical data of cholestasis, has been seen over 26 months of follow up with normal transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase and cholesterol. The absence of cholestasis in the presence of symptoms is of interest.
