Heavy metals (HMs) cause serious health endpoints to humans when they enter the food supply through several pathways. Since wheat is the main agricultural product of Khuzestan province and the soil of this province can be contaminated with HMs (As, Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd, Ni, Cr, Co) due to its oil content, the research aimed to comprehensively monitor and evaluate the potential health risks due to the consumption of heavy metals in cultivated wheat in southwest Iran. A total of 24 wheat specimens have been gathered from 4 farms situated between the cities of Ahvaz. For the assessment of HMs in cultiv

BACKGROUND: Plants change their surrounding soil microbiome by root exudates and these conditioned microbiomes impact the performance of the present as well as the next plant generation as for example in crop rotations. The big challenge is that such 'microbiome feedbacks' are highly context-dependent, i.e. they vary in strength and direction dependent on the local soil environment - of which the driving factor(s) remain unknown. Including maize in crop rotations involves benzoxazinoids (BXs), which are exuded from roots and alter the soil microbiome, which in turn affects growth and defence o

Phytopathogenic fungi of the genus Fusarium are among the major causes of yield losses in wheat, highlighting the need for the development of new effective and environmentally safe fungicidal agents. In the present study, the fungicidal activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) biosynthesized using a cell culture of Lithospermum erythrorhizon was investigated against Fusarium sporotrichioides and Fusarium oxysporum. It was shown that AgNPs effectively inhibited mycelial growth of the phytopathogens in vitro, with complete growth suppression of F. sporotrichioides and F. oxysporum achieved at co

A common mechanism by which emerging plant pathogens gain the ability to infect new hosts is hybridization. Despite its widespread occurrence, the outcomes of hybridization remain largely unpredictable within current evolutionary frameworks, making empirical studies key for identifying patterns and establishing principles underlying hybrid evolution. Here, we track the evolutionary trajectory of Blumeria graminis forma specialis triticale (B.g. triticale), or triticale powdery mildew, a pathogen that emerged recently through hybridization of two powdery mildew forms specialized on wheat (B.g.

Nitrogen (N) fertilization is the dominant anthropogenic source of nitrous oxide (N2O), yet the influence of mineral N source on N2O emission factors (EF) remains poorly quantified under semiarid irrigation. In a field study in Morocco, four mineral N fertilizers, urea, ammonium nitrate (AMN), urease-inhibited urea (Duramon), and AMN + urea, were evaluated in drip-irrigated wheat at 125 kg N ha⁻1, alongside an unfertilized control, to test whether fertilizer source alters N2O emissions and EF relative to the IPCC Tier 1 dry-climate default. Our results show that mineral N source significantly

The precipitation of water-soluble carbohydrates using organic solvents offers considerable potential, as separation and purification can be achieved in a single step. Therefore, ethanol precipitation of potential high-value xylan - the main component of wheat straw hemicellulose - is investigated and optimized. Pelletized wheat straw, prepared without chemical or biotechnological auxiliaries, is autohydrolyzed using saturated steam. The pretreatment is designed to effectively solubilize hemicellulose, resulting in a hydrolysate low in impurities that is concentrated and precipitated without f

Background/Objectives: Accurate prediction of complex traits from high-dimensional genomic markers remains difficult in plant breeding. Linear models have limited capacity for non-linear interactions, and many deep learning models scale poorly on long marker sequences. This study introduces BiMSGP, a bidirectional Mamba-based model for scalable genomic prediction. Methods: BiMSGP extends a selective state space model with forward and backward processing so that each marker can integrate sequence context from both directions while retaining linear computational complexity; this is a modeling de

Iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient that helps prevent iron deficiency anemia in humans. To address this problem, iron biofortification represents a promising strategy for developing iron-rich wheat cultivars. In this study, we identified the bHLH transcription factor TaPIL1 as a critical regulator of the wheat response to iron deficiency. Under Fe-deficient conditions, the expression level of TaPIL1 was increased. TaPIL1-5D overexpression (OE) lines accumulated higher iron contents in roots, shoots, and white flour derived from grain than wild type (WT), whereas the tapil1 CRISPR mutants

Coccidiosis, a major poultry disease caused by Eimeria species, compromises intestinal health and challenges nutrient utilization. Wheat is widely used in poultry diets worldwide and can serve as an effective alternative energy source. While several studies have highlighted the beneficial effects of wheat in poultry, evidence of its role under the Eimeria challenge remains limited. Therefore, this study was performed to better understand the effect of two dietary wheat levels on Eimeria-challenged turkey poults. A total of 240 one-day-old male turkey poults were divided into four treatments fo

Mycotoxin contamination in wheat is a major food safety concern; however, quantitative evidence linking fungal community signals, mycotoxin exceedance risk, and wheat quality traits in naturally contaminated wheat remains limited. In this study, wheat samples were collected from mycotoxin-prone monitoring sites under unusually rainy conditions in 2022 to explore early-warning indicators and post-harvest mitigation strategies. According to the National Food Safety Standard of China GB 2761-2017, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), deoxynivalenol (DON), and zearalenone (ZEN) exceeded the maximum limits in 52.2

The frequency and intensity of extreme climatic events increase the complexity in assessing climate change impacts on (agro)ecosystem functions and crop production. A better understanding of carbon and water fluxes for crop plants under climate change requires research based on direct canopy-scale measurements. By analysing a canopy gas exchange data set synthesised from 8 years' experimentation under semi-field conditions for the post-anthesis period of five wheat genotypes, we examined canopy carbon and water fluxes as well as carbon use efficiency (CUE) and water use efficiency (WUE) under

Excessive application of high-analysis fertilizers disrupts ecosystem balance and raise environmental concerns. Potassium (K) and sulphur (S) are crucial nutrients for plants optimum growth and development. Potassium uptake exceeds nitrogen (N) by almost 1.5. Its deficiency diminishes yield (~ 20%) and compromise stress resilience. Potassium application through MOP observes low recovery, poor nutrient equilibrium, suboptimal monetary returns, and environmental threats. In contrast, polyhalite, a natural multi-nutrient mineral containing K, magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), and S, presents promisin

Understanding the impact of ozone (O3) pollution on photosynthesis is essential for estimating crop yields and ensuring food security. While remote sensing of Sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) effectively assesses plant stress, most studies have focused on temperature and water deficits, with limited attention to O3-induced chlorophyll degradation. To address this gap, we utilized the SIF data from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) to investigate the response of winter wheat to severe O3 stress in China's primary wheat-producing region during 2019-2023, a period marked

Gluten comprises an intricate network of hundreds of related but distinct proteins, mainly "gliadins" and "glutenins," which play a vital role in determining the rheological properties of wheat dough. However, ingesting gluten can trigger severe conditions in susceptible individuals, including celiac disease, wheat allergy, or non-celiac gluten sensitivity, collectively known as gluten-related disorders. This review provides a panoramic view, delving into the various aspects of gluten-triggered disorders, including symptoms, diagnosis, mechanism, and management. Though a gluten-free diet remai

High-sensitivity 4D label-free proteomic technology was used to identify protein components related to gluten quality and celiac disease (CD) in strong-gluten wheat cultivar KX 3302 and medium-gluten wheat cultivar BN 207. The highly expressed storage protein components in KX3302 were high-molecular-weight-glutenin-subunits (HMW-GSs), α-gliadin, and globulin, whereas those in BN207 were γ-gliadin, low-molecular-weight-glutenin-subunits (LMW-GSs) and avenin-like proteins. In addition, BN207 had more upregulated metabolic proteins than KX3302. The abundance of storage proteins increased during d

Fusarium graminearum and F. culmorum are considered some of the most dangerous pathogens of plant diseases. They are also considerably dangerous to humans as they contaminate stored grain, causing a reduction in yield and deterioration in grain quality by producing mycotoxins. Detecting Fusarium fungi is possible using various diagnostic methods. In the manuscript, qPCR tests were used to determine the level of wheat grain spoilage by estimating the amount of DNA present. High-performance liquid chromatography was performed to determine the concentration of DON and ZEA mycotoxins produced by t

Intensive sulphur fertilisation has been reported to improve the nutrient balance and growth of Cd-exposed plants, but the reasons of this phenomenon and the role of sulphur compounds in the resistance to cadmium are unclear. We investigated sulphur supplementation-induced changes in the surface properties of roots and the level of thiol peptides (PCs) in Cd-stressed Triticum aestivum L. (monocots clade) and Lactuca sativa L. (dicots clade) grown in nutrient solution. The combination of three sulphur (2 mM S-basic level, 6 or 9 mM S-elevated levels) and four cadmium (0, 0.0002, 0.02 or 0.04 mM…

BACKGROUND: How starch-based food structure can affect the rate and extent of digestion in the small intestine and resulting glycemic response is not properly understood. One possible explanation is that food structure influences gastric digestion, which subsequently determines digestion kinetics in the small intestine and glucose absorption. However, this possibility has not been investigated in detail.
OBJECTIVES: Using growing pigs as a digestion model for adult humans, this study aimed to investigate how physical structure of starch-rich foods affects small intestinal digestion and glycem
