The objectives of the present study were to investigate the pathogenesis of a recent isolate of avian metapneumovirus (aMPV) in turkeys and to evaluate the quantitative distribution of the virus in various tissues during the course of infection. Seventy 2-week-old turkey poults were divided equally into two groups. One group was inoculated with aMPV (MN 19) with a titer of 10(5.5) TCID50 oculonasally. Birds in the second group were maintained as sham-inoculated controls. Birds showed severe clinical signs in the form of copious nasal discharge, swollen sinus, conjunctivitis, and depression fro…

Aspergillus pneumonia in renal transplant recipients at a medical center in Turkey.

Pulmonary aspergillosis is a devastating disease. Early diagnosis allowing early treatment may improve the prognosis. However, this goal remains difficult to achieve. When the diagnosis is confirmed, it is often already too late. Despite antifungal treatment, the mortality rate is high. Patients with immunosuppression show a high mortality rate. We present five patients of ages ranging between 34 and 43 years who displayed aspergillus pneumonia between 1991 and 2000. All patients received cyclosporine, azathioprine, and prednisone for maintenance immunosuppressive therapy. Their ages ranged fr

Prevalence of hydatidosis and fertility of hydatid cysts in sheep in Kirikkale, Turkey.

This study was conducted in order to determine the prevalence and fertility of hydatid cysts in sheep in Kirikkale, Turkey. A total of 3.2% of 553 lambs and 50.9% of 1320 adults were found to be infected with hydatid cysts. The most common locations of cysts were in the liver and lung. Liver cysts tended to be more fertile than lung cysts (81.53% v. 76.47%), though the difference was not significant. The mean number of viable protoscoleces in the liver and lung cysts were 12,400 and 5,800, respectively. In general, 1-10 cysts were found in liver (51.8%) and lung (64.7%). The findings of this s…

METHOD AND MATERIALS: A total of 278 12- to 14-year-old schoolchildren, 149 in a low-fluoride area (LFA) and 129 in a high-fluoride area (HFA), were included in the study. The naturally occurring fluoride concentrations in the drinking water were 0.30 to 0.40 ppm in the LFA, 1.42 to 1.54 ppm in the HFA1, and 1.55 to 1.66 ppm in the HFA2. Dental caries was recorded with the World Health Organizati

Achondroplasia in Turkey is defined by recurrent G380R mutation of the FGFR3 gene.

Achondroplasia, the most common form of skeletal dysplasia in man, has autosomal dominant inheritance and causes severe dwarfism. More than 90% of patients with achondroplasia have a G to A transversion or G to C transversion at position 1138 of the fibroblast growth factor receptor-3 (FGFR3) gene resulting in the substitution of an arginine for a glycine residue at position 380 (G380R) of the FGFR3 protein. In this study, 12 unrelated Turkish patients with achondroplasia were evaluated for the G to A and G to C transversion at position 1138 of the FGFR3 gene. Eleven of 12 patients carried the

Sanfilippo syndrome in Turkey: Identification of novel mutations in subtypes A and B.

Sanfilippo syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis type III, MPS III) is a progressive disorder in which patients are characterized by severe central nervous system degeneration together with mild somatic disease. MPS III results from a deficiency in one of the four enzymes involved in the degradation of heparan sulfate, with sulfamidase (SGSH) being deficient in MPS IIIA and a-N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAGLU) deficient in MPS IIIB. Mutation screening using SSCP/heteroduplex analysis on genomic DNA fragments was performed in five Turkish MPS IIIA and eight Turkish MPS IIIB patients. In this study two m

Acute renal failure in leptospirosis in the black-sea region in Turkey.

Leptospirosis is an infectious disease caused by pathogenic leptospires and is characterized by a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations, varying from inappearent infection to fulminant, fetal disease. Eighty-five to 90% of leptospirosis infections are self-limiting. However, 5-10% of infection by L. interrogans can cause renal tubular damage, microvascular injury, acute renal failure (ARF), and interstitial nephritis. We studied 36 patients with leptospirosis. Twenty-seven (65%) cases of 36 patients had ARF. Fourteen (51%) had nonoliguric ARF. In thirteen (48%) oliguria appeared on the thi

Premarital screening of beta-thalassemia trait in the province of Denizli, Turkey.

A premarital screening program aiming at reducing the incidence of thalassemia major was started under the auspices of the Regional Health Administration in 1995 in the city of Denizli in the Aegean region of Turkey. In this report we assessed the 4-year results of the screening program. All couples who applied for marriage procedures were screened for beta-thalassemia trait by automatic red cell indices and Hb A(2) determination. The couples at risk were counseled and offered prenatal diagnosis and termination of pregnancy in case of an affected fetus. From October 1995 to August 1999, a tota…
